When it comes to R.L. Stine, the horror writer is mainly known for his Goosebumps series. The first book, Welcome to Dead House, was released in July 1992 and R.L. Stine would go on to publish 200 plus books in his career. With the success of the books, a television show of the popular novels was created in the early 90’s. The series as a whole was quite cheesy minus a couple of episodes. However, R.L. Stine came back with The Haunting Hour on a little-known channel called The Hub. Running from 2010 – 2014, this adaption of Stine’s books...

A standout selection at Halloween Frightfest, Karoline Lyngbye’s Superposition takes a disconcerting science fiction premise and teases it out into a disturbing – and sometimes very funny – psychological drama. There are elements of horror, too, as city couple Stine (Marie Bach Hansen) and Teit (Mikkel Boe Følsgaard) head out into the woods on a journalistic mission to find themselves and end up getting much more than they bargained for. On the opposite side of the lake from their little house, they see another couple who seem to resemble them in every way.
It seems very ambitious for a first feature project, I told Karoline when I met her just before the festival.
“Yeah, I guess it is. It's the way the idea shaped itself, so that was just how it went. We did develop it within a call for fairly low budget films. The low budget part is,...

Is there any job as exhausting as being a parent? Mothers especially are expected to watch their children 100% of the time, and castigated if they don’t, but it’s an impossible thing to do in practice, especially if one is also expected to do one’s share of housework and earn a living. In the absence of a partner who is equally committed, one really needs to be two people.
Five-year-old Nemo (Mihlo Olsen) is a very full-on child, old enough to have developed an independent streak but not yet mature enough to recognise that listening to adults can still be important. When Stine (Marie Bach Hansen) and her husband Teit (Mikkel Boe Følsgaard) decide to move out into the middle of nowhere, his needs don’t seem to have been fully taken into account. It’s not a problem for Teit, who casually assumes that Stine will provide most of the care he.

“Goosebumps” has not suffered from a lack of adaptations in the decades since R.L. Stine’s YA series of novels first terrorized millennials. In addition to the anthology series that ran for four seasons in the mid-’90s, a 2015 film adaptation starring Jack Black and directed by Rob Letterman also earned a standalone sequel in 2018. Now, Slappy the Dummy, haunted cameras, evil Halloween masks and sinister cuckoo clocks are all back with the Disney+ and Hulu “Goosebumps” series, which takes on a decidedly darker tone.
Created by Letterman and Nicholas Stoller (“Neighbors”), the serialized approach encompasses multiple Stine novels as a group of high schoolers are terrorized by the vengeful ghost of a teen who died in 1993 — accidentally, at the hands of their parents. The resulting show manages to marry genuine scares with the horrors of high school and that scratchy, itchy feeling that comes with the dawning realization that...

Let’s just be honest: being scared isn’t fun. At least, not for everyone. So entering Halloween — aka “spooky season” — can be pretty hard, especially when it comes to finding movies to watch. Well, it’s a good thing you’re here.
Because the thing is, Halloween movies are a core piece of celebrating the holiday. You get together with friends, you break into the candy early, turn off all the lights and get cozy for the night. But if you’re a big ol’ scaredy cat (like this writer is more than secure enough to admit she is), those nights are significantly harder.
So, we went ahead and rounded up 13 of the best Halloween movies that you’ll be guaranteed to still get a good, nightmare-free sleep after.

Iconic scaremaker R.L. Stine has been terrorizing kids and teens for over three decades. The mere mention of the author’s name readily brings up memories of Goosebumps and Fear Street. Yet, it was his two short-story collections, The Haunting Hour and Nightmare Hour, that inspired one of the best horror TV shows for young people.
The beginnings of The Haunting Hour can be traced back to a 2007 straight-to-video movie called Don’t Think About It, which then aired on Cartoon Network. Despite its title and Stine’s writing credit, though, the movie’s script wasn’t based on anything from its literary namesake. In fact, this was an original story penned by creative partners Dan Angel and Billy Brown. One of the production companies behind Don’t Think About It, The Hatchery, then revived the Haunting Hour brand a few years later once its co-founder and the movie’s executive producer,...

The brand new “Goosebumps” television series from Disney+ and Hulu premiered on Friday, October 13, with the first five episodes now available for streaming.
Iconic elements from R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps books are woven throughout the series, and the first five episodes tease that the evil dummy known as Slappy is coming soon.
Slappy, introduced in the 1993 book Night of the Living Dummy, has become the true “horror icon” of the Goosebumps world, often appearing in adaptations of Stine’s classic terror tales. Slappy was a central figure in the recent live action movies, and it’s clear he’s also a major player in the brand new “Goosebumps” live action series from Disney+ and Hulu.
What role does Slappy play in the new series? You’ll have to continue tuning in to find out. New episodes of “Goosebumps” premiere on a weekly basis on both Disney+ and Hulu.

From possessed puppets to sentient worms, horror author R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps books spooked an entire generation of kids growing up in the 1990s. In this 10-episode series (which drops five episodes on Disney+ and Hulu before switching to weekly installments), the collection’s creepiest tales are brought back to life, all tying into a larger mystery. Five teens—football star Isaiah (EastEnders’ Zach Morris), loner Margot (Isa Briones), sarcastic James (Miles McKenna), daredevil Lucas (Will Price) and shy Isabella (Ana Yi Puig)—each face down one of Stine’s iconic frights in their fictional Pacific Northwest town of Port Lawrence before realizing they’re all fighting the same battle. In the first hour, Isaiah snaps some shots on a haunted Polaroid camera (a plot taken from Stine’s Say Cheese and Die!), which offer a glimpse at a grim future. But it isn’t all campy ghost stories and monster mashes,...

From the moment The Haunted Mask hit TV screens one chilly October afternoon in 1995, Goosebumps fans the world over knew that a movie was only a matter of time.
Those were the days of Goosebumps bedding sets, green and purple wrist watches bathed in cobwebs and time spent begging parents for the $8.95 (plus $2 shipping and handling) so that one might join the hallowed, card-carrying ranks of the Official Goosebumps Fan Club. Bookmobiles everywhere overflowed with copies of Night of the Living Dummy II and The Barking Ghost and the silver screen was ripe for the kind of wicked playfulness and fiendish glee that only R.L. Stine could deliver.
But adolescent aficionados of the spooky and the strange never saw their dream of a 90s big screen Goosebumps adventure realized. Monster kids grew into horror loving adults before Slappy and his gang of sinister monstrosities escaped the pages of R.L.

In the film Superposition, city dwellers Stine (Marie Bach Hansen) and Teit (Mikkel Boe Følsgaard) trade Copenhagen for Sweden. Their young son Nemo (Mihlo Olsen) and their dog Tarzan are in tow. As Stine tries to overcome her writer’s block at their isolated cabin in the woods, Teit conceives a podcast documenting their year-long stay. No matter how far they get away from the big city, the couple cannot escape the problems in their relationship. In due time, Karoline Lyngbye’s first long feature presents another obstacle for the main characters, albeit a more unusual one. This new challenge is scary at first, but it ultimately has healing properties.
After a slow start, the pace picks up once Stine loses sight of Nemo in the woods. The son is quickly found, but now the parents have themselves a reversal of the classic changeling scenario. As the child insists the protagonists are not his parents,...

Welcome to Camp Nightmare was originally published in July 1993 (Spine #9). The series adaptation aired on Friday, November 17, 1995 (runtime: 22 minutes x 2).
One of the many reasons why Goosebumps so effortlessly endures is that the series has always concerned itself with the universal truths and experiences of childhood. From Halloween masks to amusement parks to the untold terrors of piano lessons, R.L. Stine embraced those experiences and preoccupations which so surround the world of his youthful readership.
Given such proclivities, it only made sense that approximately one year after the first Goosebumps book Welcome to Dead House hit the shelves, like so many kid-friendly franchises often do, Goosebumps went to camp. And while this summertime adolescent escape traded in all of the staples familiar to its ilk, like canoe excursions, woodsy hikes, campfire songs and crabby counselors one generation removed, this particular camp was appropriately twisted by shady intentions and ever darkening goings-on.

From Disney darling to pop star, Dove Cameron's career has undergone quite the evolution since she began acting in her early teens. The versatile actor's earliest fans grew up alongside her as she played identical twins "Liv and Maddie" for four seasons on the hit Disney Channel show. But Cameron's professional acting career began even earlier, when she memorably guest-starred in two episodes of "Shameless" as Holly Herkimer, a young woman who was interested in Lip Gallagher (Jeremy Allen White).
Cameron's early work in "Shameless" and "Liv and Maddie" showed off the actor's range. Right from the start of her career, it was clear she could pull off comedic and dramatic roles, just as she could pivot between family-friendly fare and more daring projects. In recent years, she's continued to challenge herself as an actor with roles in B.J. Novak's directorial debut, "Vengeance" and Hulu's comedic...

The Ghost Next Door was originally published in August 1993 (Spine #10). The two-part series adaptation aired on Monday, September 28 & Tuesday, September 29, 1998 (runtime: 22 minutes and 22 minutes).
From whispers in the hallways and stories told at recess, when word of it first reached me as a kid, I felt like Goosebumps was less of a book series and more of a campfire story. Through rumor, it spread across the classrooms like wildfire, igniting imaginations and driving throngs of grade schoolers to the one place thought to be safe from the adolescent horde: the library.
While copies remained scarce, those of us dedicated enough to the cause stayed vigilant, watching the return bin between classes, hoping for a glimpse of the colorful, raised lettering that every kid in the school was talking about. So it was that I first found myself in possession of one of R.L. Stine’s already legendary tales.
