Abu Dhabi, Nov 18 (Ians) Red Bull driver Max Verstappen outpaced the Mercedes’ George Russell and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in the second practice at the Yas Marina Circuit here on Friday.
One of eight drivers to sit out first practice for various ‘rookie’ runs, Verstappen quickly got up to speed in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to produce a benchmark time of 1m 25.146s on the soft compound tyre.
Russell finished three-tenths back after encountering traffic in the final sector of his push lap on the red-marked rubber.
Leclerc was another tenth adrift in third, followed closely by first-practice pace-setter Lewis Hamilton, Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz.
Alongside Verstappen and Sainz, there were returns to the cockpit for Lando Norris (McLaren), Lance Stroll (Aston Martin), Nicholas Latifi (Williams), Fernando Alonso (Alpine), Mick Schumacher (Haas) and Zhou Guanyu (Alfa Romeo).

Mexico City, Oct 29 (Ians) George Russell put Mercedes at the top of the timesheets during second practice as Scuderia Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc crashed out in the Mexico City Grand Prix here on Friday.
But it was Russell who led the way with an early lap time of 1m 19.970s on 2022-spec soft tyres, given that the regular drivers who sat out FP1 were permitted to run their own programme for the first half of the session to help them make up for lost time (Russell having handed his car to Nyck de Vries).
Not long after Russell’s pace-setting effort, Leclerc lost control of his Ferrari at the entry to the high-speed Turn 7 and dramatically slid backwards into the barriers on the outside of Turn 8, inflicting significant damage on the car’s rear end and bringing out the red flags.
With Leclerc unharmed, his car cleared away and the barriers repaired,...

Austin (Texas), Oct 24 (Ians) Dutch Formula 1 driver and 2022 champion Max Verstappen emerged victorious at the end of an action-packed United States Grand Prix, fending off Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton in a tense finale, while his Red Bull team took their first constructors’ title since 2013.
Verstappen’s record-equalling 13th win of the season, and the squad’s championship triumph, came a day after Red Bull co-founder and owner Dietrich Mateschitz passed away — a fifth F1 constructors’ title.
Having moved into the lead at the start, avoiding the drama behind as Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and Mercedes’ George Russell clashed at Turn 1, Verstappen had looked set for a comfortable victory at the circuit, dealing with multiple Safety Car restarts and managing his pace expertly, according to formula1.com.

Singapore, Oct 2 (Ians) Red Bull’s Sergio Perez raced ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc to win his first-ever Singapore Grand Prix here on Sunday.
However, his win is currently uncertain as stewards are due to investigate a potential safety car infringement against the Red Bull driver after the race.
Leclerc had started on the pole but was almost immediately passed by Red Bull’s Perez. Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz grabbed the third position.
Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen both collided with barriers as they struggled with the stop-start nature of the race caused by the changing weather and several yellow flags.
Hamilton secured ninth, while Verstappen got the seventh position. Verstappen needed a win, and other results to go his way, to become world champion for the second successive time.

Zandvoort (the Netherlands), Sep 5 (Ians) Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has defended his team’s decision to keep Lewis Hamilton on used medium tyres at the end of the Dutch Grand Prix, which saw the seven-time champion drop from the lead to P4 as George Russell finished second.
The Silver Arrows’ pace on hard tyres was enough for them to cut into Max Verstappen’s lead midway through the race, and it seemed that a one-stop strategy from Mercedes could have genuinely threatened the Dutchman’s bid for victory.
However, when the Vsc emerged late on in the race – followed by a Safety Car for Valtteri Bottas’s retirement – Mercedes kept Hamilton out in the lead, prioritising track position, while Verstappen chose to switch to softs for the restart.

Zandvoort (Netherlands), Sep 3 (Ians) Reigning World Drivers’ Champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull took pole position for the 2022 Dutch Grand Prix, with Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc missing out by 0.021s in a thrilling contest at the Zandvoort circuit.

Verstappen logged a lap of 1m 10.342s in Q3 just before teammate Sergio Perez, fifth, spun at Turn 13 to bring out a yellow flag and prevent anyone else from beating the Dutchman’s time.

Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium), Aug 28 (Ians) Defending champion Max Verstappen extended his lead atop the Formula 1 driver’s championship by cruising to victory in the Belgian Grand Prix here as teammate Sergio Perez completed a 1-2 for Red Bull on Sunday.

The Dutch driver is leading with 284 points with teammate Sergio Perez at 191. Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium), Aug 27 (Ians) Max Verstappen was in a league of his own in second practice for the Belgian Formula One Grand Prix on Friday but like his main rival Charles Leclerc will start the race from the back of the grid.
Red Bull driver Verstappen and Ferrari’s Leclerc are among six drivers who have had changes of their power unit components beyond the legal season limit — seemingly choosing the Belgian race because overtaking is easier there than at other grands prix, reports Dpa. The Sunday grid will be fully determined after Saturday’s qualifying, with McLaren’s Lando Norris, Alpine’s Esteban Ocon, Haas driver Mick Schumacher and Valtteri Bottas of Alfa Romeo the other four to move to the back.
That could open the door for the other Red Bull and Ferrari drivers Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz, respectively, to battle for victory in the first race after a four-week summer break.

Baku (Azerbaijan), June 6 (Ians) Red Bull driver Sergio Perez won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Sunday after team-mate Max Verstappen, who was leading, crashed out with five laps left owing to a puncture, and Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton made a rare mistake in the closing stages.
Perez got his second career win ahead of Aston Martin's Sebastian Vettel, who secured his maiden podium for the team by finishing second. Alpha Tauri driver Pierre Gasly completed a surprise podium, finishing third.
Verstappen had controlled the race since taking the lead from Hamilton during the first round of pit stops but crashed heavily into the barriers on the home straight, unable to control the car after the left rear tyre was punctured. The Dutchman kicked the rubber in disgust before walking away.

Monte Carlo (Monaco), May 23 (Ians) Max Verstappen of Red Bull won the Formula One Monaco Grand Prix and took the championship lead from Mercedes's Lewis Hamilton, who finished seventh despite recording the fastest lap of the race.
Verstappen was on pole position after pole setter Charles Leclerc of Ferrari didn't start the race due to a last-minute issue with the left driveshaft, which could not be fixed in time.
The Dutchman then held off Mercedes's Valtteri Bottas at the start to hold the lead, which was crucial for the final result as overtaking is almost impossible in Monaco. Verstappen coasted to the finish line after Bottas was forced to retire due to a disastrous pitstop where his tyres didn't come off.
Ferrari at least celebrated a first podium this season with Carlos Sainz in second, followed by McLaren's Lando Norris, who secured his second podium in 2021. Hamilton had his...

Monte Carlo, May 22 (Ians) Charles Leclerc of Ferrari crashed in the final minute of qualifying on Saturday but secured pole position for his Monaco home Grand Prix.
The Monegasque clocked 1 minute 10.346 seconds around the tight 3.337km street circuit of Monte Carlo before hitting the wall and bringing out the red flag which ended the session and denied others possibly bettering his time.
Max Verstappen of Red Bull finished 0.230 second behind in second. Valtteri Bottas of Mercedes completed the top three for Mercedes, while team-mate Lewis Hamilton struggled for pace and will be only seventh, reports Dpa.
It was Ferrari's and Leclerc's first pole position since the Mexican Grand Prix in 2019.
"It's a shame to finish in the wall, but at the same time, I'm crazy happy about my first lap," Leclerc said.
"It's a bit of a surprise for everyone [in the team] to be on pole, but I've always been very unlucky here,...

Monte Carlo, May 20 (Ians) Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz were the unlikely names atop the timesheets in practice for Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix as Ferrari found pace which has so far been missing this season.
Monaco native Leclerc posted a quickest 1 minute 11.684 seconds around the 3.337 km circuit on his home streets in the second session having barely ran in the first due to an engine problem, Dpa reported.
Sainz was 11 hundredths of a second behind while in the battle of the title contenders Lewis Hamilton put his Mercedes third, fractionally ahead of Max Verstappen's Red Bull.
Formula One was returning to the Principality after the 2020 race was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Monte Carlo, May 19 (Ians) Its been almost two years since the last Monaco Grand Prix took place on the streets of Monte Carlo. The traditional Formula One race had to be removed from the 2020 calendar due to Covid-19 but makes its comeback on Sunday.
Not much has changed since the 2019 race, with Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen leading the pack. But this season has seen a different take of the duel between Hamilton and Verstappen, who currently seem to be the strongest title contenders.
All four races up to now have had at least one moment when the two drivers came wheel-to-wheel with seven-time world champion Hamilton leading the fight with three wins against Verstappen's solo triumph at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola, Dpa reports.

Sakhir (Bahrain), March 28 (Ians) German driver Sebastian Vettel of Aston Martin started the Formula One season opener Bahrain Grand Prix from the back of the grid after a five-place grid penalty, ruling body Fia said on Sunday.
The federation said Vettel failed to respect double yellow flags during Q1 in a qualifying session on Saturday when Haas driver Nikita Mazepin had a spin at Turn 1, reported Dpa.
As a result, the four-time world champion Vettel dropped from 18th to 20th on the grid on his Aston Martin debut after six years at Ferrari.
"Vettel did not abandon his lap. He explained to the stewards that he saw the smoke ahead of him, but was unsure if it was a lock-up or a stopped car until he was quite close to the car and the smoke was lifting," a statement said.

Sakhir, (Bahrain), March 28 (Ians) Max Verstappen of Red Bull took a brilliant pole position for Sunday's season-opening Formula One Bahrain Grand Prix by beating reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton by around four tenths of a second.
Verstappen clocked 1 minute 28.997 seconds in Saturday's qualifying on the 5.412-kilometre International Circuit in Sakhir as temperatures began to cool in the Bahrain evening, Dpa news reports.
It was Verstappen's fourth career pole position and was delivered on his final flying lap where he put together his fastest times in all three sectors of the track.
Verstappen topped all three practice sessions but the nature of his pole is the biggest indication yet he can challenge Hamilton and Red Bull could threaten the dominance of seven-time reigning champion Mercedes throughout the marathon 23-race season to come.

Abu Dhabi, Dec 14 (Ians) British Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton wants his new contract with Mercedes to be wrapped up by Christmas. The current contract is due to end this year and the new one looks more a formality although Hamilton reportedly wants his pay to increase from 35 million pounds to 40 million pounds a year.
"Hopefully over the next couple weeks," Hamilton replied in a press conference after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday when asked about when he hopes to complete the deal.
"We'd love to get it done before Christmas. I plan to be here next year, I want to be here next year and I think us as a team have more to do together, more to achieve both in the sport but even more outside the sport I think," he added.

Abu Dhabi, Dec 13 (Ians) Max Verstappen cruised to victory in the season ending Abu Dhabi Formula 1 Grand Prix at the Yas Marina Circuit on Sunday as the returning world champion Lewis Hamilton finished third. Hamilton's Mercedes team mate Valtteri Bottas finished second.
Bottas was more than 15 seconds behind Verstappen as the Mercedes drivers had no answer to the pace of the the Dutch's Red Bull throughout the weekend. Verstappen's team mate Alex Albon gave a late challenge to Hamilton for third place but in the end settled for fourth, thus managing a strong finish to the season and making a case for himself to retain his Red Bull seat in 2021.
McLaren duo Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz finished P5 and P6 respectively. They may have thus sealed a third place finish for McLaren in the Constructors' Championship but that result could change based on the outcome of an investigation on...

Abu Dhabi, Dec 12 (Ians) Red Bull's Max Verstappen put in a stunning lap in qualifying to take pole ahead of Mercedes pair Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton on Saturday ahead of the Abu Dhabi Formula One Grand Prix at the Yas Marina Circuit. Verstappen managed a time of 1:35.246 seconds, beating second-placed Bottas's 1:35.271 sec and Hamilton's 1:35.332 sec.
The top three are separated by 0.086s. This is Verstappen's first pole of the season and the first time since 2014 that Mercedes have not managed a one-two at the end of Q3 in Abu Dhabi.
McLaren's Lando Norris took fourth place, just 0.25 sec behind pole, while Verstappen's team mate Alex Albon too fifth. Carlos Sainz was sixth, running an older engine than his McLaren team mate which, it is believed, is costing him around two tenths of a second per lap, ahead of AlphaTauri's Daniil Kvyat.

Sakhir (Behrain), Dec 7 (Ians) Formula 1 champions Mercedes have been fined 20,000 euros after they fitted the wrong tyres to George Russell's leading car at a bungled Sakhir Grand Prix pitstop where Sergio Perez emerged as victorious.
Standing in for Lewis Hamilton after the world champion tested positive for Covid-19, Russell on Sunday took the lead from teammate Valtteri Bottas at the start and seemed set for a fairy-tale debut triumph.
However, during the race Mercedes called both drivers in for a precautionary pit stop, but put a wrong mix of tyres on Russell's car before realising their mistake halfway through Bottas' stop.
This meant Russell had to pit again the following lap to fit a correct set, while Bottas was sent back out on his original rubber after an agonising 27-second wait.
"This is clearly a breach of the regulations and would normally involve a sporting penalty up to disqualification," said...

Sakhir (Bahrain), Dec 7 (Ians) Sergio Perez took a remarkable debut Formula One win in the Sakhir Grand Prix in Bahrain after Mercedes fumbled what should have been a first victory for George Russell.
Standing in for Lewis Hamilton after the world champion tested positive for Covid-19, Russell on Sunday took the lead from teammate Valtteri Bottas at the start and seemed set for a fairy-tale debut triumph, reports Xinhua news agency.
But things started to unravel for Mercedes when the safety car was deployed on lap 61 after debutant Jack Aitken -- himself replacing Russell at Williams -- lost his front wing after a spin.
With a sizeable gap to the rest of the field, Mercedes called both drivers in for a precautionary pit stop, but put a wrong mix of tyres on Russell's car before realising their mistake halfway through Bottas' stop.
