Writer Joseph Nobile has sued Disney, DreamWorks, its successor companies, as well as author Margot Louise Watts and her publisher Simon & Schuster, claiming last year’s “The Light Between Oceans,” a romantic drama starring Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, plagiarized from a screenplay he wrote. The suit was filed in the Southern District of New York. According to Nobile’s complaint, he wrote a screenplay called “The Rootcutter,” which he subsequently retitled “A Tale of Two Humans,” and copyrighted it in 2004. He claims Watts, writing under the pseudonym M.L. Stedman, “knowingly and willfully copied, plagiarized, pirated and misappropriated expressive content” from.

Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander headline The Light Between Oceans. Here's our review...
If you're excited about The Light Between Oceans, the new film starring Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander and directed by Derek Cianfrance, it's probably based on the people involved. If that's you and you've somehow managed to avoid seeing the trailer (which goes into more detail about the plot than we will in this review, so watch with caution), then you're best placed to appreciate this slow-burning and emotionally turbulent drama by heading straight to the cinema.
In 1918, war veteran Tom Sherbourne (Fassbender) seeks solitude after his experiences in battle, and finds it in a job as a lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, off the coast of Tasmania. This doesn't last long though, when he falls in love with local girl Isabel (Vikander). After a long and flirty correspondence through letters, the two marry and get on...

★★☆☆☆ Ah, the lighthouse: visual metaphor of masculine vanity, anti-shipwreck device, and home to a solitary lighthouse keeper, desperate for company to keep him from his own thoughts. Sound romantic and, perhaps, sigh-inducing to you? Maybe a good setting for a nice romance? Well such was the thought of M.L. Stedman, writer of the popular paperback that has given rise to The Light Between Oceans, a period melodrama that's soppier than a seaman's mop.

Sure, there were bigger upsets at the Labor Day box office this weekend between 20th Century Fox’s Morgan and The Weinstein Company’s Hands of Stone clocking under $3 million apiece. However, with the onset of the fall festival/awards season, the soft start for Disney’s final DreamWorks title The Light Between Oceans stood out because it looked to have all the earmarks of a potential contender on paper. It was based on a bestselling novel by debut author M.L. Stedman…...

Few actors in recent memory have exhibited the versatility of Alicia Vikander, who just last year played a mechanic fashionista double-agent (The Man From U.N.C.L.E.), the loyal wife of a transsexual trailblazer (The Danish Girl), and a spellbinding robot with a see-through belly (Ex Machina). The Swedish actor again unveils a new side of her in The Light Between Oceans, in which she plays a woman named Isabel Graysmark who wants so desperately to be a mother that she goes far beyond the reaches of morality.
Vikander, a classically trained ballerina, throws her entire body into the role, drawn like a magnet to her onscreen counterpart, Michael Fassbender, who plays her lover, Tom Sherbourne. Saturday Morning Update: With an estimated $4.2 million Don't Breathe is right on track to become the first horror film to top the weekend box office two weeks in a row since Ouija did it back in 2014. The film is looking to crack upwards of $14-15 million for the three-day with a chance at $18 million for the four day. In second is Suicide Squad, continuing its journey to $300 million domestic with another second place finish around $10 million for the three-day and $13-14 million for the four-day after an estimated $2.24 million on Friday from 3,292 theaters. As for the weekend's two new wide releases, neither is faring well. Dreamworks' The Light Between Oceans pulled in an estimated $1.35 million on Friday from 1,500 theaters, heading toward a three-day weekend around $4.6 million and a four-day around $6 million. Looking even worse is Fox's Morgan, which won't even crack the weekend top ten after an estimated $615,000 on Friday from 2,020 theaters,...

Whether it's Blue Valentine's pitch perfect snapshot of a relationship in breakdown or the wonderful parallels and plot twists of The Place Beyond the Pines, one thing is for certain: Derek Cianfrance is ridiculously good at telling complex and unconventional stories in a way that feels irresistibly cinematic and compelling. So when teamed up with two insanely talented actors like Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, could Cianfrance's adaptation of M.L. Stedman's novel The Light Between Oceans possibly go wrong? Maybe. But first, let's try to take the director's latest drama on its own terms. The Light Between Oceans opens to reveal a bristling, English-sounding Fassbender playing Tom Sherbourne - a cagey man migrating to a remote part of Western Australia after four terrible years on...

The movie that brought Hollywood couple Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender together debuted at the Venice Film Festival Wednesday. The two couldn't keep their eyes off each other as they posed for photos together. Fassbender kept his arm around Vikander's waist as they smiled for the camera. Vikander looked chic and relaxed in a blue and white wrap maxi dress with matching block heels, while Fassbender kept his look classic in a pair of dark blue jeans with a white shirt and a blazer. The quiet couple fell in love on the set of The Light Between Oceans, a film...

Testing the boundaries of true love and it’s accompanying bliss can unfortunately end in catastrophe for even the most deserving people. They care so much about securing more happiness in their connection that they ignore the dangerous repercussions that can potentially arise. Having the willpower to do what’s right for the greater good, instead of just focusing on the effects that an action can have on one couple, is enthrallingly explored in the new romantic drama, ‘The Light Between Oceans.’ Based on the acclaimed 2012 Australian war fiction novel of the same name by M.L. Derek Cianfrance makes emotionally naked films. Just think of the raw energy coursing through 2010's Blue Valentine, his drama about divorce, and 2013's The Place Beyond the Pines, a saga of fathers and sons. Watching The Light Between Oceans feels different and less spontaneous, largely owing to the sappy source material, the 2012 bestseller by M.L. Stedman.
In his first major-studio film, Cianfrance seems too reliant on the book's trajectory, the post Wwi love story of a lighthouse keeper Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender) and his wife Isabel (Alicia Vikander), who live in tempestuously romantic isolation.

“The Light Between Oceans” is in theaters this Friday, and Derek Cianfrance’s adaptation of the novel by M.L. Stedman is so far receiving mixed notices. Indiewire‘s David Ehrlich says the director’s follow-up to “Blue Valentine” and “The Place Beyond the Pines” could have been a “masterpiece” as a Decemberists song. As a “middlebrow period melodrama,” however, it’s “lush and lacking in equal measure.”

When I first saw Blue Valentine, I was absolutely bowled over by the talent of Derek Cianfrance. My favorite film of that year, I still consider it a masterpiece. Since then, he has challenged himself with ambitious fare like The Place Beyond the Pines, though this week he has something completely new to share in The Light Between Oceans. A period piece and melodrama, it’s Cianfrance working in a slightly less grounded in gritty reality way, to solid effect. The themes he’s always explored are still there, just packaged in a different way. Some of the people who have loved his prior works might find this a step down, but it’s still very much a worthwhile movie. The film is an adaptation of M.L. Stedman’s novel of the same name. It follows Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender) as he returns to Australia after the war in search of some solitude.

When I sit down to watch any movie, there almost always ends up being at least one aspect of it that strikes me as as "wrong" in some way or another. I don't actively search for these elements — they just pop up along the way, and I'm sure you notice them too. Sometimes it's a character making a decision that doesn't feel justified, or a shot that seems particularly out of place. Sometimes it's a super cheesy line of dialogue, or an actor edging just a bit too far over the top as to briefly pull me out of the performance. Too many of these moments can ruin a movie, but for the most part, they're just little blips that I observe and sail right past. For me, The Light Between Oceans is the extraordinarily rare film that does not contain a single false note. I was utterly lost in...

‘The Light Between Oceans’ Venice Review: Alicia Vikander Flirts With Tragedy, Settles Down With Sap
With his first three features – “Blue Valentine,” “The Place Beyond the Pines,” and now “The Light Between Oceans” – there seems to be a definite pattern in the films of writer-director Derek Cianfrance. He offers up fascinating, complex characters who make difficult life choices, often in locales that are captivating or at least unusual. And then he bobbles the third act. Adapting the novel by M.L. Stedman, Cianfrance spends a good part of “The Light Between Oceans” creating empathy for men and women who are at odds with each other, even the ones who have behaved selfishly and recklessly....

Several miles off the coast of Tasmania, across a stretch of water so cold and jagged that it makes the river Styx seem like a kiddie pool, a tight-lipped World War I vet lives on a tiny island by his lonesome. Unlike most of the lighthouse keepers who come to the impossibly remote shores of Janus Rock, Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender) shows up solo — all the better for someone who wants to “Get away from things for a while.” Eventually, Tom is joined by Isabel (Alicia Vikander), the bright-eyed local beauty who agrees to be his wife. The idyllic solitude they share together might last forever if not for the series of devastating miscarriages that sink them like a squall, but the sea is full of hope for those who keep a desperate eye on the shore.
As a Decemberists song, “The Light Between Oceans” could have been a masterpiece.

Derek Cianfrance knows a thing or two about heartbreak. The “Blue Valentine” and “The Place Beyond the Pines” helmer is best known for making gut-punch features that turn electric love stories into elegies (and sometimes even eulogies) on the meaning of commitment and family, so it’s no surprise that his latest feature — distributed by Walt Disney and their DreamWorks, and thus his first real studio film — explores those same themes, albeit on a much bigger scale.
For his first film since 2012’s “Pines,” Cianfrance has taken on M.L. Stedman’s best-selling novel “The Light Between Oceans,” a tearjerker that rarely lets up on an emotionally wrenching story. Cianfrance adapted the novel himself, which follows a Wwi vet (played by Michael Fassbender) as he attempts to find some much-deserved peace and quiet when he takes a job tending a lone lighthouse on a secluded island off the coast of Australia.

In his breakout drama Blue Valentine and narratively ambitious follow-up The Place Beyond the Pines, Derek Cianfrance has been fascinated with relationships fractured by sin and the ripples of regret. This makes him the ideal fit for an adaptation of M. L. Stedman’s hit novel, The Light Between Oceans, which, in film form, follows a lighthouse keeper (Michael Fassbender) and his wife (Alicia Vikander) faced with a moral quandary.
Ahead of a Venice Film Festival premiere and wide release this week, I spoke with Cianfrance about the adaptation process, technically making a kidnapping movie, working with cinematographer Adam Arkapaw, being fascinated with time, and much more. Check out the full conversation below.

“The Light Between Oceans” follows lighthouse keeper Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender) and his wife Isabel (Alicia Vikander), a happy couple living off the coast in post-World War I Australia. Tom and Isabel want nothing more than to bring a child into the world, but after Isabel miscarries, all hope is lost. However, one day the couple rescues a baby girl who has washed ashore on a rowboat, and the two decide to name her Lucy and adopt her as their own. With a cast led by two 2016 Academy Award contenders—winner Alicia Vikander (“The Danish Girl”) and nominee Michael Fassbender (“Steve Jobs”)—and supported by 2006 Academy Award winner Rachel Weisz (“The Constant Gardener”), it’s little wonder why “The Light Between Oceans” is shaping up to be a major awards contender this year. Based on the acclaimed 2012 novel of the same name by M.L. Stedman, it’s the story of an Australian lighthouse keeper and his wife who after losing their baby child in the years just after the First World War, happen upon a baby girl in an adrift rowboat and raise her as their own. Years later, they learn of their adopted daughter’s origins from her mourning mother, played by Weisz. Writer-director Derek Cianfrance has already proven he can assuredly—and heartbreakingly—navigate the nuances of a marriage on trial with “Blue Valentine,” making “The Light Between Oceans” a promising must-see.

They raise the little girl as their own in a home filled with happiness — until they meet a woman (Rachel Weisz) who turns out to be the mother. Fassbender is wracked with guilt, while Vikander desperately wants to hold onto her child.
The movie certainly looks beautiful, with vistas of windswept cliffs and churning seas. The story and the performances are gut-wrenching, and even just the trailer will move you to tears.
"The Light Between Oceans" opens in theaters September 2.

Coming off of his Ryan Gosling-led crime drama The Place Beyond the Pines, director Derek Cianfrance headed into adaptation (and studio) territory for his next drama. From author M. L. Stedman, The Light Between Oceans follows a lighthouse keeper on a remote island in Australia who, with his wife, rescues a baby they find in a rowboat and raise as their own. Led by Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, and Rachel Weisz, we now have a new full-length trailer.
Showing off more beautiful cinematography by Adam Arkapaw (Macbeth) and diving deeper into the story, it looks like it could be a promising kick-off for the fall slate of dramas. Set for September 2nd, it’ll miss festivals like Tiff, but perhaps we’ll see it show up earlier at Venice or Telluride, or it’ll skip festivals altogether. Check out the new trailer below.

Derek Cianfrance's "The Light Between Oceans" is among the most highly anticipated literary adaptation of the year, and not just because it stars Michael Fassbender alongside Oscar winners Alicia Vikander and Rachel Weisz. M.L. Stedman's best-selling novel was met with many raves (and tears) upon publication in 2012, and a high-profile film version seemed a certainty even then. This Sunday the 88th Academy Awards will take place in Hollywood, CA and honor the year’s best films and filmmakers. The long race of awards season is finally coming to an end and what has been an exceptionally close race for best picture will finally be decided.
However, just because this year’s race is winding down is no reason to look ahead to next year’s Oscars, as a number of contenders are already emerging as realistic contenders for the 89th Academy Awards next year.
Here’s the films to look out for come 2017’s Oscar season.
The Birth of a Nation: The historical story of Nat Turner, a former slave who lead a liberation movement in early 1830’s Virginia, caused a lot of commotion when it premiered at Sundance earlier this year. The film, whose title is an ironic twist on D.W. Griffith’s iconic,...

Lynn here, offering a little break from the frenzy of this year’s Oscars homestretch to ponder a possible future awards contender…
Fall, it seems so far away! But it’s never too early to start thinking of the potential Oscars slate for next season, especially when you’ve got an adaptation of a popular book that features two mega-hot rising stars coming off fresh Oscar nominations and one Oscar winner who’s a bona fide screen goddess. That would be The Light Between Oceans, which just dropped its first trailer yesterday. Based on the bestselling novel by M.L. Stedman, it’s directed by Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond the Pines) and stars Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, and Rachel Weisz.

The first trailer for Derek Cianfrance’s (Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond the Pines) adaptation of the M.L. Stedman novel The Light Between Oceans has arrived and it’s as heartbreaking as you can imagine. The story follows Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander as Tom and Isabel Sherbourne, a lighthouse-keeping couple who are very much in love but can’t seem to make a baby. As luck would have it, a healthy baby turns up in a boat, and from the trailer you can see that luck has a way of running out.
This reminds me a lot of the Steve Martin comedy/drama A Simple Twist of Fate, but with less Martin of course. Things are going to get deep when The Light Between Oceans will open September 2nd.

Let's go back to where it all began. One of Hollywood's most elusive couples are taking center stage in the first trailer for the upcoming film The Light Between Oceans - and it's easy to see where their undeniable chemistry first sparked. Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander - both current Oscar nominees for Steve Jobs and The Danish Girl, respectively - star as a lighthouse keeper and his wife living on a remote island in Australia. The two discover a boat near the shore with a dead man and a baby girl inside, leaving them to raise the child as their own.

Derek Cianfrance, the director who brought us Blue Valentine, is back to toy with our emotions yet again in The Light Between Oceans, his film adaptation of M.L. Stedman's best-selling novel. Michael Fassbender plays a lighthouse keeper who, along with his wife (Alicia Vikander), discovers a baby adrift at sea. They raise the little girl as their own, only to find out years later that her mother (Rachel Weisz) might still be alive.
This looks like the sort of classic studio dramas that we don't see very often anymore, and if this trailer is any indication, we may be talking more about this movie around this time next year when the Oscars roll around again.
The Light Between Oceans hits theaters on September 2.

The first trailer has just dropped for The Light Between Oceans, a film from writer/director Derek Cianfrance, starring Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, and Rachel Weisz. The film is based on the M.L. Stedman novel of the same name, and tells the story of a lighthouse keeper and his wife. One day, the couple finds a baby on a washed up rowboat. They take the girl in as their own and raise her, only to realize that the girl's true mother may be closer than they realized.
The trailer is definitely on the intimate side of things, and seems like a project that takes advantage of the acting talent, as all three actors have at least been nominated for Academy Awards, and one of them, Rachel Weisz, has even won. The director's previous work consists of Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond The Pines, both of which were smaller films...

"The Light Between Oceans" is a vague title, but it's one of those dilemma dramas that forces you to ask yourself "What would you do?" when both options would be painful.
Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander -- Oscar nominees who are apparently dating in real life, because they're not perfect enough on their own -- star in the film adaptation of M.L. Stedman's Australian novel. The first trailer was just released, co-starring Rachel Weisz.
