A trip in the tracks of explorer Ef Knight becomes an unexpectedly poignant portrait of a passionate family in Mikey Corker’s compelling film
Ordinarily you don’t expect emotional depths from a surfing documentary. But I suspect that Savage Waters is not the surfing doc that director Mikey Corker set out to make. The story begins when Matt Knight, a sailor and surfer in his 50s, reads a book written by Victorian adventurer Ef Knight (no relation): an account of an 1890s voyage to find Spanish gold rumoured to buried in the rocks of the Savage Islands, a small Portuguese archipelago in the North Atlantic. What catches Knight’s attention is his namesake’s two-page description of the epic waves off the islands – narrated beautifully here by Charles Dance in a voice so deep and rich it could lure you on to the rocks.
So Knight organises an adventure to the islands,...

HBO’s “100 Foot Wave” offers few visual clues the world outside of the compelling docuseries was in the grips of a 100-year pandemic that will kill millions of people.
The show’s hero and protagonist, Garrett McNamara, was not filmed wearing a mask despite the close quarters of many scenes that are featured in Season 2’s first and second episodes. And he was by no means alone.
But Covid-restricted plane rides to Portugal were soon required as rare early season conditions at Nazaré prompted a reunion of the world’s best big-wave surfers. They included McNamara, Ian Cosenza, Lucas “Chumbo” Chianca and Kai Lenny.
“We saw this big swell on the map,” McNamara said from his house in O’ahu, Hawaii. “It was the best-looking swell that I’ve seen, with the best conditions. And it looked like it was going to be the best waves we’ve ever seen.

Christina El Moussa's already got a house to make over on her new Hgtv reality show, if she wants ... although it's in pretty good shape already. TMZ has learned ... Christina just shelled out $4.1 million in an off-market deal for a 4 bedroom, 4 bath home in Newport Beach, California. The home was remodeled in 2016 and doesn't look like it needs much work, but we're told Christina will likely put her own touches on it for her show.
