Lil Boosie was granted an early release from a Louisiana State Penitentiary this week, nearly 5 years after he was imprisoned on drug charges.

Boosie, whose real name is Torrence Hatch, was arrested in 2009 on a marijuana charge. Originally, he was only sentenced to four years behind bars. However, the 31-year-old rapper was caught trying to smuggle drugs into the prison during his stay, leading a judge to add eight years onto his original sentence, reported TMZ.
Though Boosie is leaving the penitentiary early, he’ll remain on parole until 2018.
Boosie could have been behind bars for a much longer period of time. In addition to the drug charges, he was implicated in the murder of Terry Boyd. Facing first-degree murder charges, Boosie was accused of hiring the then 17-year-old Michael “Marlo Mike” Louding to kill Boyd.
