It has been almost a week since Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi dropped on Netflix, and the show has been criticized for its weak plot. One of the actresses who have to bear the brunt of trolls is Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s niece, Sharmin Segal, who plays one of the leads, Alamzeb.
Sharmin plays Manisha Koirala‘s daughter in the show, who struggles to break the norms of a Kotha and dares to dream of becoming a Shaayra. However, Sharmin’s acting skills and her Urdu diction have been a constant target for the trolls.
For the unversed, the actress is Sanjay Leela Bhansali‘s niece, and she has also been attacked for casting in the series only due to her nepotistic links. Probably due to the excessive trolls, the actress who recently shared a...

Over the last few years, globally, there has been a significant increase in our degree of viewership due to the proliferation of various Ott platforms. As it has embraced niche audiences and content, it has empowered filmmakers and emerging talent to showcase their work to a wider audience. In India too, the wave has been felt with web series such as Sacred Games (2018), Scam 1992 (2020), Paatal Lok (2020), Jubilee(2023), and The Railway Man (2023), among others. The recent Netflix extravaganza, Heeramandi, directed by auteur filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, whose image among cinephiles and general viewers is held with respect, also roused similar expectations. Unfolding across eight episodes, the ambitious series centers around the lives of tawaifs (nautch girls) in the red-light district of Heera Mandi in Lahore, before the partition of India. Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi, now on Netflix in eight episodes is everything that Bhansali has come to be associated with, then some more. It is a feast for the eyes and soul with a gallery of female actors giving their best to every shot. At times the best of these actresses is not good enough. One of the lead actresses pretending to be drunken dancing is ludicrously caricatural. But then there is Aditi Rao Hydari looking every inch the ethereal kothewali, a distant cousin to Rekha in Umrao Jaan. And Shruti Sharma as ill-fated-in-love Saima makes her space. I must also mention Jayati Bhatia as Manisha Koirala’s faithful woman-Friday. Even when in the background she makes her presence felt.
Bhansali’s vision and execution are impeccable so much so that you wonder what this kotha classic would look like on the big screen.
