María Gabriela de Faría, best known for her roles in the Fox comedies “Animal Control” and “The Moodys,” has been cast as the villain The Engineer in James Gunn’s highly anticipated “Superman: Legacy,” according to an insider with knowledge of the project.
Production on the first Dcu film is set to start in March 2024.
The Engineer is a relatively new character in the DC universe, first appearing in 2009. Her real name is Angela Spica. She was created by writer Warren Ellis for “The Authority” comic book series.
Angela Spica was a brilliant scientist who replaced her blood with 9 pints of nanotechnology. This granted her a wide range of technological powers and abilities.
As The Engineer, she can control technology, transform her body into high-tech weapons and gadgets, interface with computers, recreate herself if injured, and more. This will be the character’s first live-action appearance.

Exclusive: María Gabriela de Faría, the Venezuelan actress best known for roles in Fox comedies Animal Control and The Moodys, has landed a breakout part on the film side, joining the cast of James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy.
Her character is Angela Spica aka The Engineer. Part of the Warner/DC flick’s villain team, Angie’s powers stem from nanotechnology built into her body. Created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, she’s the second DC character to bear the name of The Engineer and was first introduced in The Authority vol.1 #1 in 1999.
The first title in a revamped DC slate, marking Gunn’s first directorial effort as co-head of DC Studios, Superman: Legacy will follow Superman as he looks to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

While movie remakes are popular across genres (Anyone remember the 2018 remake of Garry Marshall's "Overboard"?), the horror genre is especially susceptible. The genre is unique insofar as its scares endure more than most. Where comedies and action movies, for instance, are inextricably linked to their time of release, a scary movie is a scary movie. With a fresh coat of paint, what was new three decades ago can seem fresh again.
A curious contemporary trend has emerged in which relatively recent titles are remade just a few years after their original releases. Released just 14 years after the first "Cabin Fever," the remake used the exact script as the original. Recently, horror filmmaker Anthony Diblasi released "Malum" in select theaters. "Malum," a remake of Diblasi's 2014 indie "Last Shift," isn't quite a shot-for-shot remake so much as it is a reimagining. With more money and more experience, Diblasi revisits his demonic fable in a new context.

A promo teaser for an upcoming Spanish language sci-fi thriller called Pacifico has been passed along to us. Produced in part by our friends at Filmsharks this will be one of the promos shown to prospective buyers at Marche du Film next month as Pacifico heads into pre-sales. Gonzalo Gutierrez 'G.G.' is making his feature film debut on this project. He has a lengthy history in visual effects, most recently he was the effects supervisor on Alejandro Hidalgo’s The Exorcism of God. We will say that the most hopeful thing we see is not in the promo itself but in one of the pictures below. Is that a practical creature effect there? The Colombian/Argentine co-production is now in post and will look for...

A priest performs an exorcism, only to find he’s transferred the evil to his own body in Alejandro Hidalgo’s swaggering movie
“Sometimes I think the devil’s in the Vatican’s own ranks.” While the true-life horror of Roman Catholic child abuse probably wouldn’t sit easily in a genre film, this bombastic but occasionally surprising Mexican-Venezuelan exorcism flick does engage with ecclesiastical sexual abuse in a more general sense. Right down to its blaspheming finale, The Exorcism of God burns with a subversive desire to rip back the veil on the church’s earthly corruption – but the iconoclasm is somewhat undermined by the daft horror mechanics Venezuelan director Alejandro Hildalgo props it up with.
Rookie American priest Peter Williams (Will Beinbrink) ill-advisedly takes it upon himself to give a yellow-eyed demon its marching orders from the body of a nun, Magali (Irán Castillo). But, faced with the succubus tied to a bed,...

Alejandro Hidalgo made his debut in 2013 with The House at the End of Time, a haunted house film with a brilliant twist. Based on that, great things were predicted for him. Instead there were several years of silence between it and the announcement of The Exorcism of God. And a few more years before the finished version made its way to festivals. As always in cases like these, the question is, was it worth the wait?

The House at the End of Time is a rare cultural beast – a Venezuelan chiller. Consequently, it’s far from a traditional genre flick, whereby it’s a mesmerising feat of time shifts melded with the supernatural to work towards developing the real human themes of regret and hope. Despite this, writer and director Alejandro Hidalgo is intelligent enough to still throw you off the main story scent with a very scary and atmospheric opening. A terrified mother wakes to find a mysterious scar down her cheek, discovers the dead body of her husband lying in her basement and is helpless to stop her son disappear into the darkness – snatched into the never, never by an unseen hand.

Winning Best Director and Best Film at the 2014 ScreamFest Film Festival, Alejandro Hidalgo’s directorial debut The House at the End of Time will continue to enjoy the distinction of being one of the only Venezuelan horror films currently in existence. Mixing haunted house spooks with sci-fi concepts, Hidalgo’s feature is reminiscent of Nacho Vigalondo’s Timecrimes, but rather than attempting to logically engage with its time warping tactics, the film largely ignores these for supernatural discourse. A bit too rough around the edges in too many regards to attract attention beyond being something of a novelty, Hidalgo shows promise with the level of ambience and laudable look of the film.

*full disclosure: a DVD copy of this films was provided IFC Films Director/ writer: Alejandro Hidalgo. Cast: Rosmel Bustamante, Adriana Calzadilla, Simona Chirinos and Gonzalo Cubero. The House at the End of Time is a future IFC Films release, involving time shifting sequences. Somewhat like 2005's Memento (2000), time is used in a very unusual way. Characters can be in different timelines, at the same time as one house acts as some sort of ghostly conduit. Very complex in the writing department and somewhat slow in pacing, The House at the End of Time is a cinephile's dream. The film beings with a small family. It is a loveless marriage, until two young boys enter the picture. Dulce feels obligated to them and she offers them shelter. But, Dulce's husband is less welcoming. Later, time begins to change as the past looks almost dreamlike, in quality. A haunted house is a hub of supernatural excitements.

“Your fingerprints were on the weapon. So was the child’s blood. Despite her pleas that a malevolent force in the house was responsible for the killings, Dulce was sentenced to the maximum penalty of imprisonment. Now, as part of her sentence, Dulce is sent back to her old home and the scene of the crime under house arrest, where she’s forced to confront the horrifying memory of what happened there.

Indie horror Faults and Venezuelan chiller The House At The End Of Time are two of the films in this month's Bottom Shelf...
Summer holidays, barbecues on the beach and weekends decimated by relentless weddings: this is August for some. For other, more discerning types, it is about Frightfest, otherwise known as the chance to spend those rare sunny days ensconced in a darkened room for a horror movie marathon. This year’s Leicester Square event featured the usual mix of gonzo gore, copycat-killings and premiere screenings of future favourites; we managed to catch a few highlights.
The latest film from writer and director Riley Stearns (Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s husband, fact fans), Faults, received a European premiere last month. Massively enjoyable from start to finish, Stearns’ black comedy mostly eschews the genre necessity of scattergun bloody slayings in favour of an intelligent script focusing on the gaping voids left in desperate characters’ lives.

The international flavour of this year’s FILM4 FrightFest is underpinned by an historic moment, as the fifteenth installment of the festival features the first Venezuelan film to screen at the festival – Alejandro Hidalgo’s The House at the End of Time.
But no sooner will FrightFesters be lost in a house with a difference, than FrightFest’s gaze turns north and follows the Blood Moon towards Jeremy Wooding’s genre mash up of comedy, horror and the western.
Both The House at the End of Time and Blood Moon possess a distinct sense of feeling, and serve as a testament to the importance of the creative voice even within the shadow of genre. But these are two films that paint a picture of horror in the Americas.

One of the highlights of Fantasia for me this year was checking out Alejandro Hidalgo's The House at the End of Time. I gave it some praise here, but if that review isn't enough to get you curious about the film, here's a trailer.
The film does have a U.S. distributor in a company we're all very familiar with. That news will be announced soon and hopefully we'll get a release date then, too.

The House at the End of Time is one of the most inventive supernatural thrillers to come along in a while - an impressive, confident and creepy debut from Venezuelan writer-director Alejandro Hidalgo. This fresh voice in the genre adopts many of the usual genre tropes, however, he crafts them in a relentless, meticulous manner to serve a story that is full of shocking twists and turns.
The film doesn't waste any time either. In the first 10 minutes it effectively manages to provide two solid jolts involving leading lady Ruddy Rodriguez (as "Dulce") who awakens on the floor of her home bleeding and surrounded by shards of a broken mirror. Moments later, we find Dulce being arrested for the murder of her husband and son. Flash forward 30 years later and Dulce is an elderly woman being released from prison but who is under house arrest in the very home she supposedly committed her crimes in.

In the Red Room with a Vue, the chorus of delighted FrightFester’s are set to join together in joyous song for the chorus of their clawed and shrivelled icon…
“One, two, Freddy’s coming for you.
Three, four, Better lock your door
Five, six, grab your crucifix.
Seven, eight, Gonna stay up late.
Nine, ten, He’s back again.”
If life can be described as a disappointment, of a vortex of uncertainty, then the one constant is FILM4 FrightFest, which, like a beacon of light, guides us to safely towards a guaranteed trip of unadulterated pleasure into the Dark Heart of Cinema every August Bank Holiday.
So what news has fallen upon our ears to add a little more detail to what the landscape of FrightFest 15 looks like?

“I’m your boyfriend now, Nancy.” It may be hard to believe, but it’s been thirty years since Robert Englund’s Freddy Krueger said those words to Heather Langenkamp’s Nancy in Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street. Set to kick off on May 14th, this year's Cannes Film Festival will see the premieres of many hotly anticipated genre flicks, and today we've gotten word of an exciting collaboration between Cannes and other top festivals that brings even more exciting genre fare to the event.
Per Variety, Ventana Sur's genre film market Blood Window will team with the world’s top six fantastic film fests for five Blood Window Midnight Galas of Latin American genre movies.
Four event partners collaborate to select one film each at the Blood Window Galas: Austin’s Fantastic Fest, Spain’s Sitges-Catalonia Festival, the Puchon Fantastic Fest, and the Frontieres Co-production Market, a joint venture of Montreal’s Fantasia Fest, Vision-in-Motion, and Brussels Festival.
The first Blood Window Midnight Galas line-up includes two sci-fi movies – The Incident and Fallen Cape – plus a rabies outbreak movie with Sapphic undertones: Darkness by Day.
