In the late Spring of 1979, Paramount Pictures' production of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" was in big trouble. With a looming release date of December 7 of that year, the film was still struggling to be completed, with the bulk of its visual effects work yet to be even attempted, let alone finished.
In retrospect, given the movie's production history, this was an inevitable problem. Ever since the original "Star Trek" series was cancelled in the summer of 1969, the franchise had experienced a number of stops and starts when it came to being revived. Around the mid-'70s, creator Gene Roddenberry had seemingly set up a script and a production for the show's leap to the big screen, only for Paramount to pivot and seek to turn that work into a proposed reboot of the series back on television, to be known as "Star Trek: Phase II." That show was literal...

Exclusive: Dateline NBC is set to launch its 15th original podcast Mortal Sin, to be reported by Dateline correspondent Josh Mankiewicz.
The first two episodes will be available for download and streaming for free across podcast platforms on December 5; the remaining three will drop over the following two weeks. Subscribers to Dateline Premium on Apple Podcasts can listen to the first two episodes now and will receive subsequent episodes early.
Mortal Sin investigates how the death of a pastor’s wife after a house fire uncovers a web of sex, murder, and deception.
“It’s a story about trust, about betrayal, about truly crazy things that happen in the name of religion, and ultimately about murder. While you’re listening, you will say several times to yourself, ‘That can’t actually have happened.’ Except…it did,” teased Mankiewicz, who previously reported on Motive for Murder, Internal Affairs and Dateline: Missing in America podcasts.

The NFL Draft is so inherently exciting for sports fans that to release a “ticking clock” thriller about the day leading up to the event feels less like a good story idea than it does a way to generate excitement for the upcoming event, while cramming in as much team merchandise as the producers will allow. Draft Day, a new film from director Ivan Reitman, is only intermittently exciting and boasts few surprises, as well as a flat performance from Kevin Costner.
In a move that some sports movie fans may consider sacrilege, Costner has abandoned baseball for football. Here, he plays Sonny Weaver, Jr., an ambitious but hot-headed Cleveland Browns general manager trying to deal with the fallout of a potentially shoddy trade that he agreed to 12 hours before the NFL draft. He took Seattle’s first-round draft pick spot for the Browns’ first-round selections for the next three years.

Ivan Reitman's early comedies leaned heavily on the idea of the scruffy underdogs who managed to retain their personal quirks within systems designed to break them down. Whether it was the rowdy campers and counselors of "Meatballs" or the shabby soldiers of "Stripes" or the Ghostbusters, Reitman's movies seemed to celebrate these characters and the entire idea of rebellion. After those films, though, he became an A-list director whose movies seemed to lean on high concepts that were much less interesting. "Legal Eagles" and "Twins" were both dispiriting efforts that leaned heavily on movie star charisma in place of actual scripts and characters. In general, any film Reitman made with Arnold Schwarzenegger felt like a total refutation of the things that Reitman did well. The one bright spot in his post-"Ghostbusters" filmography was "Dave," which started as a sharp and funny script, and if "Draft Day" feels like any of his prior films,...

Smallville star Tom Welling has joined the cast of Ivan Reitman's upcoming football movie Draft Day. Welling will star alongside Kevin Costner, Jennifer Garner, and Denis Leary.
According to the report, Welling will play a character named Brian Drew, "a veteran quarterback in the crossroads of his career, in the story about a Cleveland Browns Gm (Costner) who attempts to trade up for the first pick in the NFL Draft and save football in the city."
This is the second movie role that Welling has had since Smallville ended. He has a supporting role in a JFK film called Parkland, which just started shooting. I'm surprised Welling hasn't done more film. Draft Day should be a solid project for him. Reitman has made some amazing movies in his career, and this sounds like it could be a good one. ...
