There are few monster movies that can claim to have as much respect in cinema history, as well as just sheer scope of influence, as 1954's "Godzilla." Also known as "Gojira" in its native Japan, the heralded classic of the kaiju genre remains a haunting dissection of the atrocities of World War II through the lens of a nation contending with the horrors they faced, namely the atomic bomb. It's also, not for nothing, one heck of a showcase for old-school practical creature effects. The now-iconic titular monster was brought to life using a practical suit worn by Haruo Nakajima. A legend was born of that performance, but he paid the price during filming.
In the 2017 book "Godzilla on My Mind" by William M. Tsutsui, it's explained that the costume used in "Godzilla" was created using "a framework of bamboo stakes and wire, with thick overlays of latex and plentiful padding of urethane foam.

I've written about situational thrillers under Olympic-sized pool covers, atop mile-high radio tower platforms, and even locked in a rogue sailboat's bathroom — yet "#Manhole" still earns originality points. Director Kazuyoshi Kumakiri and writer Kazuyoshi Kumakiri pop the metal cover off an abandoned concrete basin like a bottle for catching fireflies. The single-location motivations behind "#Manhole" recall Mariano Cohn's SUV chamber piece "4x4," more obscure in presentation and nefariously themed. Where something like Rodrigo Cortés' "Buried" relies on the grounded claustrophobic trauma of being sealed alive in a coffin, "#Manhole" embraces absurdity and twisty storytelling beyond being stuck in one place. Cutthroat realism is traded for social media skewering amidst many other wicked veers into derangement, with a spike-tipped ending for the ages.

1973 signaled Sadao Nakajima's first and last collaboration with Atg, with “Aesthetics of a Bullet” featuring some of the trademark elements of the company, including punk aesthetics, a genuine anti-hero, social commentary, while the artistic freedom Atg always granted its filmmakers, allowed Nakajima to retain his favorite Yakuza theme and include intense exploitation elements.
The movie starts with a rather impressive scene, where under a loud punk track that is also an ode to the overall punk philosophy, Nakajima sets the frame the story of the movie takes place in, showing people overbying, overeating, overpolluting while enjoying themselves in sex shows and hostess clubs. The protagonist, Kiyoshi Koike, is a direct product of this setting, as we first meet him peddling supposedly dwarf-rabbits on the street, only to make enough money to waste on drinking and gambling. His girlfriend, a prostitute, loves him dearly and is even willing to continuously...

It seems that in this year's Short Shorts Film Festival and Asia, one of the motifs is famous actors shooting their debut short films, with Kengo Kora and Hiroshi Tamaki being two of the most prominent samples. The former has come up with “Courier”, a short that focuses on a bicycle courier in Tokyo.
