Two just-opened art exhibits showcase the work of powerfully influential women who trained their keen focus on L.A. and the film industry, while a retrospective look at the oeuvre of South African artist William Kentridge opens Nov. 12 at The Broad.
Joan Didion: What She Means Hammer Museum, Westwood
Like Joan Didion herself, this new show paying homage to the famed Slouching Towards Bethlehem writer is the perfect blend of East and West coasts. Curated by her friend and mentee, New Yorker writer and critic Hilton Als, to reflect her interests and inspirations, the show tracks the places Didion lived and visited (Berkeley, Hawaii, Miami, El Salvador). Works such as Betye Saar’s 1966 assemblage View From the Palmist Window and Ed Ruscha’s 1966 photo series Every Building on the Sunset Strip join photos and archival materials, including a film poster for 1976’s A Star Is Born,...

In an early scene in “Thunder” (“Foudre”), the camera soars around the Swiss Alps. Caught at first in daytime, as it glides down a grassy hillside, past a stream, it hovers over a high valley, up to rocky peaks and blue sky and around again in a final 360 degree circle. There it alights on Elisabeth, 17, a nun, as the sun sets behind a mountain in silhouette. Meanwhile, religious choir music swells on the soundtrack.
The shot is symptomatic of the muscular physical direction of Swiss writer-director Carmen Jaquier, whose feature debut world premieres at Toronto’s Platform, before segueing to San Sebastian’s main New Directors sidebar, where it weighs in as one of the buzziest titles in the section.
“Thunder” is set in 1900 when the church exercised an extraordinary grip over outward social life and Swiss hamlets were dirt poor. Elisabeth returns to her village after the mysterious death of her elder sister,...

The denizens of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences need to get their eyesight checked. 2019 was another watershed year for women on and off-screen, even if the accolades accrued at the Golden Globes and Oscars did not reflect it. Greta Gerwig released her highly anticipated Little Women, Olivia Wilde made her directorial debut with the sassy, Gen Z Booksmart, Big Little Lies Season 2 aired on HBO, and a slew of films ushered in a horror renaissance featuring astonishing female leads including Florence Pugh in Midsommar and Lupita Nyong’o in Us. But 2019 also marked a year of great loss: the prolific filmmaker Barbara Hammer passed away, as did luminary Agnès Varda and the performance artist and experimental filmmaker, Carolee Schneemann. Which is to say, women were in the news when it came to cinema; some of us just had to know where to look.

Above: LemebelIn Joanna Reposi Garibaldi’s documentary, Lemebel—an ardent homage to the Chilean artist, essayist and queer activist Pedro Lemebel that opens Neighboring Scenes festival dedicated to Latin American cinema—Lemebel looks at the black-and-white photograph of his adolescent self and his mother, leaning into each other, and croons repeatedly, “My mommy… my mommy.” It’s a moment so whispery and delicate a filmmaker less attuned to its emotional portent would have probably edited it out. But Garibaldi clearly sees her work as a farewell not just to the artist but also the person, an emphasis on affect that cuts across the various programs. When Garibaldi’s film opens, Lemebel, who passed away in 2015, from laryngeal cancer, is already quite frail. His physical state makes for a poignant contrast to his intellectual vitality, as demonstrated in clips from his lectures, and also to the provocative and often taxing nature of his early performances.

The estate of Ana Mendieta has reached a settlement with Amazon Studios over its claims that the film “Suspiria” borrows heavily from the late artist’s work.
The terms of the agreement were not disclosed. The film is set for release this weekend in New York and Los Angeles before going wide the following week.
The estate filed a copyright infringement suit last month, alleging that some images in the film are derived from Mendieta’s pieces. In interviews, director Luca Guadagnino has said he was influenced by Mendieta’s art.
The estate’s agent, Galerie Lelong & Co., first flagged some similarities after the film’s trailer was released in June. The estate alleged that one image of a woman’s hands bound across a table was lifted from Mendieta’s “Rape Scene.” Another image of a human silhouette on a sheet was alleged to be derived from her “Untitled.

Amazon Studios is facing a lawsuit over the use of shots in “Suspiria” that allegedly bear similarities to works by Cuban-American artist Ana Mendieta. The Estate of Ana Mendieta sued the studio on Thursday, September 27, accusing “Suspiria” of borrowing from the late artist’s work, Variety reports.
The lawsuit claims the “Suspiria” teaser trailer, released on June 4, featured two shots influenced by Mendieta’s 1970’s works “Rape Scene” and “Untitled.” One shot showed a woman’s hands bound with rope (which the lawsuit says is inspired by “Rape Scene”) and the other depicted the bloody silhouette of a body on a sheet (allegedly inspired by “Silueta Series”).
The Estate of Ana Mendieta sent a cease and desist letter to Amazon in July. The studio pulled the teaser trailer from online and the lawsuit states the two shots are not included in the theatrical release. However, the estate claims there are...

Amazon is being sued for copyright infringement by the estate of artist Ana Mendieta, which claims the film Suspiria borrowed too liberally from the Cuban-American’s work. The suit, filed in Seattle, alleges the film and a trailer used images taken from Mendieta’s works including Rape Scene and Untitled: Silueta Series, Mexico.
Director Luca Guadagnino previously said his aesthetic for the visually striking pic, which was one of the biggest talking points at the Venice Film Festival, was inspired by a number of artists, including Mendieta. The Italian filmmaker told us influences included “radical feminist art of the 1970s which looked at violence on the female body.” Mendieta falls into that category.
Even though this damages-seeking suit was planted in the backyard of the House of Bezos, Amazon declined comment when contacted by Deadline.

The Estate of Ana Mendieta sued Amazon Studios on Thursday, alleging that the film “Suspiria” borrows from the late artist’s work.
The suit alleges that the film and the trailer used images that were derived from two of Mendieta’s pieces from the 1970s, “Rape Scene” and “Untitled.” Director Luca Guadagnino has given interviews in which he said he was inspired by Mendieta’s work. In one interview, he said he wanted to remake the original “Suspiria” because it was “soaked in the ideas of feminist art.”
Mendieta was a Cuban-American artist who addressed themes of violence against women, and used images of nature to create silhouettes of her body. She died, at 36, in a fall from a New York apartment tower in 1985. Her husband, sculptor Carl Andre, was tried and acquitted of murder.
According to the lawsuit, her estate is managed by her sister, Raquelin Mendieta, and her niece,...
