In what marks a first for Chile’s Storyboard Media, Baremo Films of Mexico has boarded its psychological thriller “Quizas es cierto lo que dicen de nosotras” (“Maybe It’s True What They’re Saying About Us”), which has been shooting in Santiago since Feb. 1 and will wrap later this month.
Written and directed by Sofía Gomez (“Trastornos del sueño”) and Camilo Becerra (“Perro muerto”), the co-production also involves Chile’s La Jauria Cine as well as Argentina’s Murillo Cine and HDArgentina.
“We’re delighted to have our first co-production with Mexico, which is such an important market, given its relevance in terms of promotion and visibility in our region,” said Storyboard Media’s Gabriela Sandoval and Carlos Núñez.

"Do you know why there is no peace? Because the devil has got the whole world in his hands." The Cinema Guild has revealed an official trailer for an indie documentary called Sansón and Me, which premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival last year. The acclaimed film also played at tons of other festivals, including Sheffield DocFest, DocsMX, Hot Springs Doc Festival, Denver Film Festival, and Cameraimage in Poland. After meeting this boy while working as an interpreter, director Rodrigo Reyes (also of 499) decided to make a film about him. Made over a decade, it tells the story of a young immigrant's path from coastal Mexico to a life sentence for murder in California. Sansón is now in a prison in the US, with no parole. With no permission to interview him, Sansón and Reyes worked together using hundreds of letters as inspiration for recreations of Sansón's childhood, featuring members of Sansón's own family.

First landing on our radar with the award-winning 499, Mexican-American director Rodrigo Reyes is back with Sansón and Me, a documentary that follows a migrant caught at the intersection of mass incarceration and immigration. Winner of the Best Film Award at Sheffield Doc Fest, the film will arrive via Cinema Guild, beginning at Bam on March 3 and expanding on March 10. Ahead of the theatrical run, we’re pleased to exclusively debut the first trailer.
A decade in the making, Sansón and Me is set between Californian prisons and coastal Mexico. The project began when Reyes was working as a court interpreter in rural California for the then 19-year-old undocumented Mexican migrant Sansón Noé Andrade, who was sentenced to two life sentences without parole in Pelican Bay State Prison. Through letters and visits, Andrade shared his story with Reyes. Unable to film inside the prison, the tale is told through dramatic reenactments...

Director Rodrigo Reyes re-enacts his experiences with a young Mexican serving life without parole, weighing up the pressures and life choices
With this startling and sombre documentary, Mexican film-maker Rodrigo Reyes has conducted an experiment in verbatim cinema, or what you might call witness cinema. In 2014, Reyes was at his day job as a California court interpreter translating for a defendant: Sansón Noe Andrade, a young Mexican immigrant who was to be convicted for first-degree murder having been the driver for a drive-by gang shooting, conducted by his 15-year-old brother-in-law. Andrade got life without parole, having denied guilt and denied gang membership; he insisted he was reluctantly giving his brother-in-law a lift out of politeness with no idea of his intention. Andrade had turned down a plea bargain, but then made a bad impression on the jury by claiming not to have heard any gunshots.
Later, Reyes entered into a correspondence with Andrade,...

It is fair to assume Criterion could plunder the world of licensed film to build an ultimate noir playlist; credit, then, for focusing sharp and nabbing deep cuts. The Criterion Channel’s November / Noirvember program will be headlined by “Fox Noir,” an eight-title program with Otto Preminger deep cut Fallen Angel, three by Henry Hathaway, Siodmak, Dassin, Kazan, and Robert Wise, and while retrospectives of Veronica Lake and John Garfield will bring some canon into the fold, I’m mostly thinking about that potential for discovery.
Following “Free Jazz,” Bob Hoskins, and Joyce Chopra programs, the other big series is a 30-year survey of Sony Pictures Classics: Sally Potter, Satoshi Kon, Panahi, Errol Morris, Almodóvar, Haneke, Mike Leigh, just a murderer’s row. Streaming premieres include 499 and A Night of Knowing Nothing, two recent epitomes of I Wish I Had Seen That; Criterion Editions comprise Cure, Brazil, Sullivan’s Travels,...

The jury of Emma Davie, Ike Nnaebue, and Raymond Phathanavirangoon said: “The filmmaker chooses to explore a subject matter which is all too often invisible and neglected: the incarceration of immigrants in the US. By collaborating with the young protagonist to find an innovative filmic language to evolve the socio-economic circumstances behind his desperation, the filmmaker allows us to empathise with a personal narrative beyond the law.”

After films including Lupe In The Sun and Abuelos, Mexican-American documentarian Rodrigo Reyes continues his examination of the experience of Mexican emigres and their families both in their home and adopted lands with his latest film, which is structured around his correspondence and conversations with Sansón Noe Andrade, a Mexican migrant sentenced to life without parole in the US for his part in a killing.
Reyes met Andrade when he was his court-appointed interpreter and, drawn to him by their shared emigre status, invited him to be part of a film that considers his life. The end result is a ruminative if sometimes unwieldy examination not just of the childhood and life that led Sansón to be incarcerated but, by extension, a consideration of Mexican socioeconomics and the American justice system. Since Reyes is unable to record Andrade directly, he enlists members of the young man's family back in Mexico to.

Sansón Noe Andrade was a “quiet and super-polite” 19-year-old who was behind the wheel when his (even younger) brother-in-law decided to open fire on a rival from the passenger side of Sansón’s car. As a result, both teens were charged with murder. And Sansón, perhaps […]
