Our Editor-in-Chief, Rodrigo Perez, put it best, the “Mission: Impossible” series is arguably the most dynamic, well-oiled, and spectacular action franchise there is and “Dead Reckoning” is the best installment thus far.

From there, it’s onto our larger topic, writer/director Trey Edward Shults‘ sophomore film (after Ayt favorite “Krisha” from last year) “It Comes At Night,” which despite its misleading marketing (it’s not a monster movie, more a European-flavored horror/survivalist art picture) is a strong effort nonetheless.

The review embargo has lifted for Sony's "Ghostbusters" reboot and so far the reaction has been fairly consistent - a little tepid, neither gushingly good or aggressively bad. Much of the criticism isn't levelled at the cast or director, but the overall film itself with complaints of lacking any innovation and being too slavish to the original. As a result it never seems to escape its shadow.
That said, there's also been praise for some of the scares and key character moments, and the film is doing well on the aggregate review sites - 76% on Rotten Tomatoes and 67% on Metacritic at this point in time. Not great, but good scores nonetheless.
Interestingly there's a good mix of female reviewers out there tackling the topic to try and provide a more balanced perspective than we usually get with Summer tentpoles. Here's just some of the sample quotes below:

The Force Awakens is a bona fide cultural phenomenon. It opened to widespread critical acclaim and smashed the box office to smithereens, and a month on shows no sign of slowing down. This is what every Star Wars fan wanted; a return to form for the venerable franchise after the lacklustre prequel trilogy.
However, it hasn’t all been sunshine and lollipops for the latest episode in the Star Wars saga. If the Internet has taught us one thing, it’s that haters can’t abide a huge success.
Not long after its release, haters flooded The Force Awakens’ IMDb page with hyperbolic one-star reviews claiming it was a travesty on the level of The Phantom Menace. Some online critics have taken potshots at The Force Awakens as well, knocking it for being nothing more than a photocopy of A New Hope. It seems the Internet backlash is preparing to go full swing.

After sweeping up the Oscars last year with his delightfully subversive and absurdist dramedy “Birdman,” writer/director Alejandro González Iñárritu takes a hard turn into bleak, violent, and meditational man-vs.-nature epic-drama territory with “The Revenant.” Based on the harrowing true story of frontiersman Hugh Glass’ (Leonardo DiCaprio) fight against the unforgiving coldness of nature as he sets on a journey to take revenge on the people who left him for dead, “The Revenant” has been getting some solid reviews on its way to opening wide stateside on January 8, 2016. The film has yet to be seen by yours truly, but Rodrigo Perez’s review on our site is positive, and I happen to know that The Playlist’s own Erik McClanahan has also gone for it in a big way. Now you can watch Iñárritu talk candidly about his creative process in bringing such challenging material to the big screen.

Not everyone is feeling a lot of joy for "Joy." The first wave of reviews have rolled in for David O. Russell's Oscar contender, and they have been decidedly mixed, but our Rodrigo Perez came out on the more positive side of the spectrum. He said in his review that the Jennifer Lawrence-starring film is "painfully funny, engaging and full of relatable heartache" and is "bold and vibrantly told in ways that always cuts close to the heart of human vulnerability." So yes, it's another wild dervish of emotions from Russell, but if you let it wash over you, it's a powerful concoction. While the film's lead star didn't participate, a new Q&A featuring Russell along with Bradley Cooper, Edgar Ramirez, Elisabeth Röhm, and Diane Ladd finds the director and cast delving deeper into the themes of the film about a young woman's determination to forge her own American dream.

You may have noticed a change in the byline. This week, I’m taking over “The Knick” recaps from Rodrigo Perez, and will carry you through the end of the season. We’ve both been big fans of the show, and the second season, so you won’t see much of a change in our appraisal. However, I am going to mix up the format slightly, and try and break things down character-by-character, while also adding some broader context. So let’s dive right in. The title says it all for the eighth episode, “Not Well At All.” If Dr. Thackery’s (Clive Owen) near heroic return to medicine and normalcy seemed too good to be true, that’s because it is. If Herman Barrow (Jeremy Bobb) thought his duplicity wouldn’t be discovered by his wife, he’s wrong. If the domestic bliss experienced by Cleary (Tom Sullivan) and...

As the week wound down, the first reviews for Alejandro G. Innaritu’s "The Revenant" landed, and the overall verdict is that his gritty revenge tale is a powerful one, even if it's sometimes a difficult watch. Our own Rodrigo Perez weighed in, describing the film as "unforgettably visceral" with "much to be dazzled and experientially shaken by." Read More: Review: Alejandro G. Inarritu's 'The Revenant' Starring Leonardo Dicarprio And Tom Hardy To keep the momentum going, 20th Century Fox dropped an epic new TV spot that ties together the two overriding themes of the film: family and bloody, hell-bent vengeance. Highlighting the film's Malick-esque lensing, and Leonardo DiCaprio's go-for-broke performance, this should definitely get the blood pumping as you put this on your must-see list for the month. "The Revenant" opens on Christmas Day. Watch below.

Ioncinema.com’s Top 3 Critics’ Picks offers a curated approach to the usual quandary: what would you recommend I see in theaters this month? This November, we’ve got a pair of films Sundance Film Festival Next section premiered films that will be found on several best of lists for 2015, and the other item was one of the most admired films to land on the Croisette.
Entertainment – Rick Alverson
November 13th – Limited Release
Distributor: Magnolia Pictures
Awards & Fests: Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival with a good number of U.S. film fests, some noteworthy stops included New Directors/New Films, Locarno, Sitges, London and Chicago.
What the critic’s are saying?: Simply put, Rick Alverson’s The Comedy (2012) is brilliant. Predictably his abrasive parameter-less cinema is what sets this filmmaker apart and in this case shows the shortcomings of mainstream audiences. Only four features into his filmography, there...

Next Friday, Steven Spielberg geeks like myself will (hopefully) be turning out in droves to buy tickets to the master director’s latest film, the very serious-and-handsome-looking Cold War thriller “Bridge of Spies.” The Tom Hanks-starring period drama has garnered mostly favorable responses following its premiere at the New York Film Festival (our own Rodrigo Perez seemed to like it just fine… here’s his review) and is poised to be a contender during the upcoming Oscar season. Read More: The Cold War Heats Up In 3 Clips For Steven Spielberg's 'Bridge Of Spies' Spielberg has been in the game for decades and, at this point, he’s considered an immovable, practically monolithic creative force: an undeniable legend in his field. And yet, it’s easy to forget, that the modern grandfather of blockbuster cinema was, at one point, an ambitious, intelligent, and vulnerable young artist who...

The Forbidden Room – Guy Maddin/Evan Johnson
October 7th – NYC Release
Distributor: Kino Lorber
Awards & Fests: With world preems at prestige fests such as Sundance, Berlin, Tiff and Nyff.
What the critic’s are saying?: Slant Magazine’s Carson Lund found plenty to admire and points to “one of the principal joys of The Forbidden Room, too easily left unexplored when thinking about its labyrinthine structure, is admiring the utter lunacy of its storytelling idiosyncrasies—the way, for instance, every new character’s entrance is promptly trailed by a lovingly designed title card stating their name, the actor playing them, and often a succinctly worded personality trait.

Don’t get this confused with Tommy Wiseau’s The Room!
Based on the Best Selling Novel by Emma Donoghue, Room is a unique and unexpectedly tender exploration of the boundless love between a mother and her child. After 5-year-old Jack and his Ma escape from the enclosed surroundings that Jack has known his entire life, the boy makes a thrilling discovery: the outside world. As he experiences all the joy, excitement, and fear that this new adventure brings, he holds tight to the one thing that matters most of all–his special bond with his loving and devoted Ma.
Directed by Lenny Abrahamson, Room stars Brie Larson, Jacob Tremblay, Joan Allen and William H. Macy

After the hype and anticipation, "True Detective" season two kicked off last night, and while early reaction might've been mixed from critics, everyone is still watching. You can check out Rodrigo Perez's take on the first episode "The Western Book Of The Dead" right here, and my own feeling is that the new season is compelling, but facing some bumps in the road due to the expanded cast of lead characters. It's a lot of story to juggle and it doesn't always run smoothly. But it features terrific performances all around, and by the end of the first hour, I was hooked. And so, as you gather 'round the watercooler this morning to talk with everyone around the office about the show, here's a few videos to get the conversation started. First is the show's opening credits (you can check out all the music cues from "The Western Book...

If you’re reading this article, chances are you’re probably going to see “Jurassic World” this weekend. Or maybe you know someone who is. Whatever your stance may be on one of the summer’s most hotly anticipated tentpoles, it’s hard to argue that Steven Spielberg’s seminal 1993 original, “Jurassic Park," is a modern masterwork. It’s one of the definitive monster movies of the last half-century and it’s a film that unites geeks and film snobs across the spectrum. Colin Trevorrow’s souped-up fourth installment hits theaters today and while only time will tell if 'World' succeeds as the true spiritual successor to Spielberg’s original, early word of mouth is mixed-to-mostly-positive (our own Rodrigo Perez gave it a B+). Before audiences head back to the Park for one more ride, perhaps it’s high time that we looked back at the earlier 'Jurassic' films as a whole,...

" 'Dope' is both intelligent and crowd-pleasing, and its vintage soundtrack will attract a wider crowd beyond an indie audience," Rodrigo Perez wrote in his review of the movie out of the Sundance Film Festival. Today, the details for the Pharrell Wliliams curated soundtrack have arrived, and yes, these are perfect for a summer playlist, especially for hip hop heads. Read More: Watch: First Clip From Sundance Sensation 'Dope' The soundtrack is packed with classic tunes from hip hop's golden era, with tracks from Digital Underground, Naughty By Nature, A Tribe Called Quest, Nas, Public Enemy, Digable Planets, plus a couple of new school jams. Also featured are Awreeoh, the band made up by the characters in the film played by Shameik Moore, Tony Revolori, and Kiersey Clemons. All told, this is one dope (sorry, but not really) collection of tunes. "Dope" opens on June 19th with...

The Barden Bellas are back, folks, and this time they've been the reigning U.S. a cappella champions for three years running. But after one big rip in Fat Amy's costume, the winning team turns into an epic a cappella fail. In this sequel to 2012's sleeper hit, Beca (Anna Kendrick), Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson), Chloe (Brittany Snow) and co. return to redeem their Bellas from being the shame of American a cappella by competing in the world a cappella competition against the German international champions. While not considered as fabulous as the original, the sequel is still funny enough to compel even third and fourth graders to see it (in case you're wondering, for the most part, that's a bit young for the humor).
Here are five issues to keep in mind before heading off to see the Bellas return to glory in "Pitch Perfect 2."
1. Did your kid see the original?...

With writer/director David Robert Mitchell's Cannes-premiered "It Follows" bringing in over $16 million at the domestic box office on a slim $2 million budget, the theatrical market seems ripe for another arty horror movie hit to arise. So which of this year's festival favorites could follow (no pun intended) in "It Follows'" footsteps? With the close of the 3rd annual Stanley Film Festival on Sunday, below I've pegged six buzzed-about horror titles from this year's three major festivals so far (Sundance, SXSW and Stanley) that could become the next unlikely breakout in theaters. "The Witch" Director: Robert Eggers Cast: Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie Synopsis: New England, 1630: William and Katherine lead a devout Christian life, homesteading on the edge of an impassible wilderness, with five children. When their newborn son mysteriously vanishes and their crops fail, the family begins to turn on one another. Screened at: Sundance...

"Fifty Shades Of Grey" takes it off, ties you up, and gets it on this weekend, and by all accounts, the box office will be huge. But will audiences dig it? Certainly fans are already between the sheets for the flick, but critics are mixed, and some, like our own Rodrigo Perez, completely loathed it. And he's certainly not alone. Down under, on Australia's "Today" morning show (via Film Drunk), you might think you'd find a softball review of the movie from a show that's aimed right towards stay-at-home moms or people who just want a bit of easy news before heading off to work. But you'd be mistaken. Lisa Wilkinson goes off on the movie (with some annoying cheering on from her fellow colleagues) and tears it a new one in a clip that's making the rounds for good reason. Meanwhile, The Onion's Peter Rosenthal offers a hilarious take on the movie,...

We may be accused of suffering from apophenia, but we observed a lot of trends at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. What do trends at film festivals mean? Well, considering films aren’t made by some committee of filmmakers disparately selected to appear at the festival, trends can mean nothing and they can mean a lot. Observing the zeitgeist, some trends are worth watching to see if they crest, and some, of course, are just random coincidence. Between Katie Walsh, Rodrigo Perez and contributors Drew Taylor, Oli Lyttelton, Kevin Jagernauth, Nik Grozdanovic, Kate Erbland and Jenni Miller, we saw over 50 films at the Sundance Film Festival collectively (all of our 2015 Sundance Film Festival coverage is here). So patterns emerge and perhaps abnormal meaningfulness is found. You be the judge. Here are some of the trends we spotted at the 2015 festival. The Rise Of The Black Nerd Here’s an interesting little...

With 2015 upon us, we figured it was a good time to look back on the movies the millennium has brought us. We've dug into the archives and are re-running our Best of the 2000s pieces, from way back in 2009 when the Playlist was a little Blogspot site held together with tape and string. Each list runs down the top 10 films of each year (it's possible that, half-a-decade on, we'd put them in a different order and even change some of the movies, but we wanted to preserve the original pieces untouched as far as possible). Check out 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 if you missed them, and today we continue with 2009. Fyi, unlike the other pieces, which were compiled by group, 2009 were the picks of Editor-In-Chief Rodrigo Perez only, and also went to twenty picks. If he were to do them again, they'd probably look very different, too... Getting a definitive top 10 out of the Playlist team is hard.

"Rick Alverson has made some absorbing and intimate indie works," begins Rodrigo Perez at the Playlist. "The Builder is a terrifically underrated gem, and New Jerusalem coaxes another strong lead performance by musician Will Oldham. But it's Alverson’s provocative and pointed collaborations with comedian Tim Heidecker that have proven to be layered and rich next-level works. The deeply misunderstood The Comedy—a hilariously confrontational, but also alarming examination of the age of ironic distance—is an incendiary piece de resistance. But Alverson may have outdone himself with Entertainment, an even more abrasive, alienating, and nightmarish masterwork about the cruel futility of connection, performance, and existence." We're gathering more reviews. » - David Hudson...
