Exclusive: Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan and his Bosque Ranch have optioned the S.C. Gwynne book Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History.
Bidding was competitive, and Bosque was aggressive to win the book. Sheridan and Jenny Wood will produce for Bosque Ranch.
A long-standing passion project of Sheridan’s since back when the project was set up at Warner Bros, the book is an exhaustive historical account of the four-decade struggle between the Comanche tribe and white settlers to control the American West. Quanah was considered its greatest chief.
Comanches were legendary fighters, with young boys able to ride horses bareback by the time they were 6 years old. They were so masterful with the bow and lance that they stopped the northern drive of colonial Spain from Mexico and halted the French expansion westward from Louisiana.

“Mudbound” director Dee Rees will write and direct an untitled horror project for Blumhouse “centered on the domestic lives of black lesbians in rural America,” the New York Times revealed in a profile of Blumhouse founder Jason Blum. The news was confirmed by The Tracking Board.

The only thing more exciting than “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” the hotly anticipated sequel to James Gunn’s sci-fi superhero comedy, is the fact that it comes with a different kind of sequel: A second installment of the equally delightful “Awesome Mix,” a list of songs so great they deserve to be sent into space in case alien life forms ever find them.
Not just any other soundtrack, the songs in the “Awesome Mix” often comment on the action of the film, using music to enhance a scene in a nod to the golden age of Hollywood musicals.

No two words have been as closely associated with the modern comic book movie than “dark” and “gritty,” oft-repeated buzzwords that speak to an attitude and style that have not always panned out for the franchise-leaning features (a lesson that DC continues to learn the hard way). Filmmaker James Gunn doesn’t do gritty — at least when it comes to his “Guardians of the Galaxy” features, though his earlier work, which includes 2006’s clever riff on cheesy sci-fi “Slither” and 2010’s just plain nasty “Super,” reveal wry hints of deviousness to his aesthetic that his Marvel properties happily circumvent.
That has allowed him to craft some of the franchise’s most purely entertaining installments — “Guardians” and its sequel, which opens May 5 — and it’s no surprise that he’s already signed up to direct a third “Guardians” movie, making him the first filmmaker to tackle three Marvel movies in a row.

Ahead of the May release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, writer/director James Gunn wrote a heartfelt message on Facebook announcing that he will indeed return to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which will take place after the events of Avengers: Infinity War.
From James Gunn: "Well, this week we start the U.S. press junket, before traveling to Europe at the end of the week. Since its premiere at the Telluride Film Festival earlier this year, Barry Jenkins’ “Moonlight” has garnered widespread critical acclaim and has grossed over $3 million. The film follows the life of Chiron from childhood to early adulthood as he struggles with his environment and his budding sexuality. Though its performances and Jenkins’ direction have received much attention, the film’s score and soundtrack are worthy of notice as well. Watch a montage below from A24 featuring clips from “Moonlight” and a selection of songs from the film, including “Classic Man” by Jidenna (feat. Barry Jenkins is about to become the next big thing, but he’s been here before. “Moonlight,” which he wrote and directed, has been celebrated as the year’s major discovery and the ultimate achievement in modern black filmmaking. That’s nothing new for Jenkins: Eight years ago, the director faced similar acclaim on a smaller scale with his 2008 debut, “Medicine for Melancholy.” However, the lag between his first two features is a testament to Jenkins’ quiet determination — and to a culture that had yet to catch up. It takes time for the world to recognize a genuine vision.
“I think a filmmaker like me isn’t on the outside in the same way that I was in 2008, even though the work itself feels very, very outsiderish,” he said. “It’s completely fucking crazy, because it didn’t used to be that way.” While “Moonlight” marks Jenkins’ transition into a major artist,...

The Coen Brothers have found their next thriller to pen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox has enlisted Joel and Ethan Coen to write a new screenplay for their film “Dark Web,” formerly titled “Silk Road.”
Based on the two-part Wired magazine article by Joshuah Bearman, the project centers on the true story of Ross William Ulbricht, also known as Dread Pirate Roberts, who created the online illegal-drug marketplace called The Silk Road. Ulbricht was arrested in 2013 and is currently serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for selling narcotics and money laundering.
The film was initially set up in 2013, with author Dennis Lehane writing the first draft of the movie.

Syfy has announced development of what is potentially a brilliant new show, and with Craig Borten (Dallas Buyers Club) on board to write (at least the pilot) and serve as executive producer, there’s every reason to hope for the best.
The show, 51st State, is going to follow a new and greatly expanded version of an idea similar to Escape from New York, surrounding the events that follow when the U.S. buys Greenland and turns it into a penal colony. Faced with no end to the overpopulation of prisons in sight, and no other solutions to the problem, we apparently go back to an old idea.
While little is obviously known about the show, the most intriguing part of what is known is that there’s a twist (isn’t there always with Syfy?) in that apparently the prisoners are being lied to, and are thus all but...
