Whatever happened to actor-turned-filmmaker Olivia Wilde directing a “Spider-Man” spin-off, rumored to be a Jessica Drew “Spider-Woman” film? Well, it’s unclear if it will ever happen, and it’s clearly not anywhere on the release date schedule. But perhaps in a sign that she still intends to make some kind of superhero film centered around women, she’s signed a deal to partner with producer Simon Kinberg and Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap productions to make a live-action adaptation of Rob Liefeld’s “Avengelyne” comic series (via THR).

Spider-Man is one of, if not, the famous faces of comic book heroes and superhero films of all time. The character is iconic in movies and comics, and the time has come for him to dominate video games, the success of the single-player Marvel’s Spider-Man games of Insomniac has ushered in a new era of story-telling, and as ambitions grow, so does risk. The canceled Spider-Man: The Great Web could have added something new to the franchise.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: The Great Web would allow 5 players to team up and web-swing away across a war-torn New York terrorized by the Sinister Six.

Madame Web Was Kind of Weird
This…… is actually more comic-accurate than you think. At first glance, Sony’s Madame Web movie might look like little more than a hodge-podge of disconnected pieces of Spider-Man lore hastily strung together by a studio desperate to create a franchise out of whatever material it has the rights to at the present moment. And while that’s not an incorrect assessment, it’s also an incomplete one.
Unlike Sony’s Venom films or the maligned into memehood Morbius. Madame Web pulls much more directly from its source material and may even be inspired by several specific comic storylines. But what makes Madame Web, both the character and the film, an exception to the rule?...

The popularity and success of the Spider-Verse animated franchise have inspired Sony to introduce shared Spider-people-oriented world-building gimmicks in live-action movies as well, and Madame Web is the first step in that direction. As a part of Sony’s existing Spider-Man Universe (Ssu), which includes movies like Venom, Morbius, and the upcoming Kraven, Madame Web will introduce the titular spider-themed clairvoyant as well as a host of female spider-characters, as the movie aims to become the franchise’s first female superhero ensemble.
However, despite the fact that these characters are prominent members of the Spider-Society, appearing across comics, animated series, and games for a couple of decades, they are relatively obscure to the general audience due to not having a presence in live-action movies yet. This can make enjoying a superhero team-up movie a bit of a challenging affair, and to get rudimentary knowledge about the characters in question,...

Hollywood is leaving milk and cookies out for Olivia Wilde this holiday season with news that she’s striking a deal with LuckyChap to direct Naughty, a comedy described as Bridesmaids in the North Pole. Cocaine Bear writer Jimmy Warden wrote the script with Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, and Josey McNamara, producing through LuckyChap.
According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, Naughty follows Mallory, whose only hope of securing custody of her son from her gaslighting trashbag ex is to find Santa Claus in the North Pole and convince him to testify in her divorce hearing.
In case you forgot, LuckyChap produced Barbie, which earned $1.4 billion at the worldwide box office. Combine Barbie‘s success level with Wilde’s in-demand status as a filmmaker, and you’ve got a recipe for making money fall in a blizzard-like fashion.
Wilde’s next film is the biographical sports drama Perfect, starring McKenna Grace and Thomasin McKenzie.

In “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” our hero Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) is transported to a dimension where dozens of other Spider-heroes reside — or at least intersect like threads on a web.
There’s Miguel O’Hara/Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac), the leader of this Spider Society. His right hand is Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman (Issa Rae), who shares the same superhero name as Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman (Hailee Steinfeld). You won’t confuse them though, as each hero has his/her own distinct character design and animation style.

Sony is expanding the scope of its corner of the Marvel universe with another "Spider-Man" spin-off movie next year in the form of "Madame Web." While Dakota Johnson will be playing the titular character in director S.J. Clarkson's film, much has been made of "Euphoria" star Sydney Sweeney's casting and who she might be playing. Now, we know for sure, and it very much sounds like she could have a future as a major Marvel superhero.
In a recent profile of Sweeney by Variety, it was confirmed that the actress will be playing none other than Julia Carpenter. In the pages of Marvel Comics, this is one of the personas who eventually becomes Spider-Woman. However, it was not explicitly stated that she would be playing Spider-Woman in this film, though one assumes that would be the way to go. Sweeney, commenting on it, explained that she was very excited.

Barbie may be everything, and Ken is just Ken, but what about the people in the Real World they meet along the way? Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, based on the popular dolls, is a hyper-stylized take on the Mattel toys that sees the titular doll journey from Barbie Land to the Real World on a quest of self-discovery.
This movie definitely looks the part, but it wouldn’t be what it is without its incredible all-star cast full of award-winning actors and familiar faces. Here’s what you need to know about the Barbie characters and the actors who play them.
Margot Robbie is Barbie

This Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse article contains spoilers.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse eased us into the multiversal weirdness. After introducing Miles, we finally met Peter B. Parker, followed by Spider-Gwen. Soon, things went nuts with a noirish detective Spider-Man, an anime girl from the future, and a cartoon pig. Once all that was done, we got to see a futuristic Spider-Man 2099 interact with a badly animated version with an obsession with pointing.
But this year’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse goes absolutely crazy with Spider-Man variants. Some are throwaway designs for the movie, but there are also many who are deep cuts from Marvel Comics history. Here’s a guide to all the new arachnid heroes and heroines in Across the Spider-Verse:
Spider-Woman
Starting with the supporting cast, we have a take on Jessica Drew as Spider-Woman, a mainstay heroine in Marvel Comics who was an Avenger and Agent of both Shield and Sword.

A major part of the fun of the multiverse-related stories is to see the limitless possibilities when it comes to characters—putting them into various settings, modes, timelines, and roles to explore through a plethora of iterations of the same basic traits. Not only does it provide the artistic freedom to work out various combinations and the chance to break free from a rigid mold, but it also keeps the said characters or archetypes relevant by prioritizing universality. Sony’s Into the Spider-Verse broke new ground while showing the multiverse in a unique way by bringing together seven different Spider-Characters, and the recently released sequel to it, Across the Spider-Verse, raised the stakes manifold by showcasing literally hundreds of new Arachnoid superheroes swinging on screen. All with their unique animation style, some returning ones retaining the past touch while some entirely new characters who don’t even have a comic-book origin yet,...

Sixteen years after Sam Raimi’s first Peter Parker adventure and a decade after the introduction of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse revolutionized superhero cinema. A visual marvel (pun intended) backed by witty humor, a deep heart and an understanding of what makes the character so beloved, it was not only the best Spider-Man movie, but potentially the greatest superhero movie ever made. Now, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse proves it was no fluke.
Building on the boundless creativity and imagination of its predecessor, Across the Spider-Verse infuses the genre with much-needed vitality and imagination, overwhelming audiences with an aesthetic audacity never seen in an animated film from a major studio. It stretches the boundaries of comic book cinema and takes advantage of the freedom animation provides without losing sight of what made the first film so special.

It has become common practice for studios to cram in every single reference and Easter egg they can into superhero movies, perhaps so that dedicated fans will pore over each frame and return to the film to find more. Whether that be license plates that spell out specific comic issues or more abstract things like thematic parallels reproduced by repeated imagery, the Spider-Man films are probably the most dense in this regard, drawing from an almost endless history of transmedia properties, be they video games, movies, comics and even cereals.
And now, with the release of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Sony Pictures Animation has given itself the license to push this practice further than ever before as the film expands into the vast and endless Spider-Verse. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is spinning a powerful web at the box office.
The sequel opened to $120.5 million in North America, well ahead of expectations and the third-biggest opening ever for an animated film, as well as a best-ever for Sony Animation, not adjusted for inflation. It’s also the second-biggest opening of 2023 to date. The movie, which easily come in at No. 1, boasts both stellar reviews and audience scores.
Across the Spider-Verse also flexed its muscles overseas, opening to $88.1 million from 57 markets for a worldwide bow of $208.6 million.
Across the Spider-Verse played older than a traditional kids animated movie, with 67 percent of ticket buyers in North America falling between ages 18 and 34. And, like almost all superhero films, the pic skewed male (62 percent), according to PostTrak. EntTelligence reports that the film enjoyed the most foot traffic of any 2023 release behind Universal’s The Super Movie Bros. Movie.
The accolades don’t stop there.

Technically, the congregation of Spider-Men outside the pages of comics happened in the 90s animated series, but in 2018, when Sony released Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, it presented the scope of the multiverse to a larger fanbase, which eventually culminated in the fulfillment of the dream of seeing three live-action Spider-Men of our generation together in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Needless to say, when the second installment of the movie was announced, fans had pretty high expectations, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse didn’t disappoint a bit. If the first entry had shown a glimpse of the Spider-Verse to the audience, the second one opened a vista to the interconnected universe, displaying all the spider-madness it had to offer. Scattered among innumerable Spider-Character appearances, teases, references, and homages, there were plenty of Easter eggs in Across the Spider-verse, and although it’s not humanely possible to list every one of them,...

Shameik Moore returns as Miles Morales, who thanks to his friendship with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) and Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson) is drawn into a tangled web (get it?) of all-new Spider-characters like Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac), Spider-Woman Jessica Drew (Issa Rae), Spider-Man India (Karan Soni) and the breakout new character Spider-Punk (Daniel Kaluuya). Together, they are facing off against the evil new villain The Spot (Jason Schwartzman), a character that could threaten the existence of every dimension.
TheWrap spoke to Moore, Steinfeld and Johnson, as well as Brian Tyree Henry and Luna Lauren Vélez (who play Miles’ doting parents) about the new movie and what aspect they’re most excited about. (You can watch the video above.)
“This felt really ambitious.

One of the coolest thing about "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" is that it introduces a multiverse of Spider-People, which means there's a Spider-Person out there for everyone to identify with. "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" introduced a couple of fun new Spider-Folks, including Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld), Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson), and Spider-Man Noir (Nicolas Cage), but the sequel ups the ante, giving spider-fans a whole slew of characters to love and see themselves in.
One character is so unique that the actor playing her had to look well outside of superhero cinema for inspiration: Issa Rae's Jessica Drew, aka Spider-Woman, who is heavily pregnant and still crime-fighting. She's the first visibly pregnant superhero in a big blockbuster film, and she's a total badass who rides a motorcycle and doesn't hide behind a secret identity. So who did Rae look to for inspiration for this unique and impressive character?...

Wherever Hailee Steinfeld goes, quality projects seem to follow.
The Oscar nominee’s latest return to the big screen in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has received near universal acclaim like its Oscar-winning predecessor, Into the Spider-Verse (2018), and both animated projects are on a very short list of recent comic book films where critics and audiences align in terms of reception. This pattern of critical acclaim is nothing new for the Los Angeles native, as The Edge of Seventeen (2016), Dickinson (2019), Arcane (2021) and Hawkeye (2021) all follow suit. Her 2018 film, Bumblebee, is also the only well-received installment in the Transformers franchise so far.
In the Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson-directed Across the Spider-Verse, Steinfeld got the chance to dive even deeper into Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman, as the movie actually begins with her story, something that surprised even Steinfeld herself upon seeing the film.
“I was never given a script in its entirety.

The ever-looming battle between the indomitable human spirit and its inescapable nemesis has been the central theme of many great superhero-oriented stories, and the prospect of a fictional costumed champion going against all odds and choosing to persist against the inevitable has always fascinated us. As Miles Morales and Co. swing into the theaters with the release of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the much-anticipated sequel to the masterpiece of a comic-book flick, Into the Spider-Verse, we are reminded of the never-ending struggle, brilliantly put together with an emotional, vibrant, and absolutely spider-filled spectacle.

A standalone Spider-Woman movie is happening, though there are a lot of other question marks around it. Producers Amy Pascal and Avi Arad talked to Variety on May 31 about some Sony Spider-projects coming down the pipe, including plans for another Tom Holland movie, a live-action Miles Morales film, and the upcoming "Madame Web" feature. Arad told the outlet that a standalone "Spider-Woman" film will be out "sooner than you expect." He added, "I cannot tell you yet, but it's coming."
The question remains, though, if it will be a live-action Spider-Woman movie or an animated spinoff of the Miles Morales "Spider-Verse" films. This June's "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," the second Mile Morales Spider-Man movie, introduces a lot of new Spider-people, including Issa Rae as Jessica Drew, aka Spider-Woman. Plus, the movies also feature Gwen Stacy (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld), another alternate universe version of Spider-Woman. Back in 2018, Pascal confirmed to...

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has wasted no time in spinning an impressive web at the box office.
The sequel grossed $17.4 million in Thursday previews, the second-best showing ever for an animated title (that’s not exactly a surprise, considering the pic is playing older than a traditional kids animated movie).
The sequel to best animated feature Oscar winner Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse should enjoy a domestic debut of $80 million or more over the June 2-4 weekend.
In 2018, the Phil Lord and Christopher Miller-produced Into the Spider-Verse opened to $35.6 million domestically on its way to becoming a box office sensation and topping out at $384.2 million worldwide.
Across the Spider-Verse again follows Marvel’s Miles Morales/Spider-Man, voiced by Shameik Moore, and Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman, voiced by Hailee Steinfeld, set across the multiverse of Spider-People. New voice castmembers include Issa Rae (Jessica Drew).

What’s up, danger? After nearly five years, it’s time to swing back into the Spider-Verse, as Sony’s sequel, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” has webbed up $17.35 million in Thursday previews at the box office.
The animated sequel is expected to open at $80 million this weekend, with some projections going as high as $90 million or more. It’s a big swing ahead of the original movie, 2018’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” which opened with $35.4 million and had $3.5 million in Thursday previews.
The Thursday total also gives “Across the Spider-Verse” the second-highest preview gross for an animated movie, behind “The Incredibles 2” with $18.5 million, and the second-highest previews for any “Spider-Man” film, behind “Spider-Man: No Way Home” with $50 million.

Warning: this post contains spoilers for "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse."
The wait is finally over and, nearly five years after the original "Into the Spider-Verse" introduced the first cinematic version of Miles Morales to the world, the beloved Marvel superhero is back in "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse." Much like the 2018 film, producers Phill Lord and Chris Miller helped inject a great deal of humor into the film, having penned the screenplay alongside David Callaham. While there are many, many great jokes peppered throughout the sequel, one joke stands a cut above the rest as not only deeply hilarious but as a demonstration of precisely what makes these films work so well.
Towards the end of the first act of the movie when things are starting to come together and we're beginning to explore some of the other universes within the Spider-Verse, we take a little visit to Lego Spidey's world.

If you have a favorite incarnation of Spider-Man in any form—comics, films, TV series, games, whatever—chances are you’ll catch a glimpse of that version somewhere in Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse. The previous film, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, introduced the concept of the multiverse and parallel worlds.

Maybe the multiplex should seriously consider adding seat belts to their plush reclining chairs (maybe dump the seat warmers). An odd notion you might say, but with this weekend’s huge film release, well you may just agree. So, it’s a sequel and yes, we’ve gotten a few of those already in this summer movie season. And it’s a superhero flick, along with three other flicks this year. And it’s also animated, just like that ground-breaking, game-changing Oscar winner from five years ago. Back then some thought, that this was a “cash grab”, that Sony was trying to squeeze the last penny from their live-action franchise. Wow, were those folks proven wrong. Hey, heads up the much-rumored “super-hero fatigue”, because here’s the “cure”. It’s finally time to swing into Spider-man: Across The Spider-verse, which might leave you with a big “Stan Lee-sized” grin on your face!

Spider-Man is for the young. This has of course been the character’s eternal and multigenerational appeal. The last live-action flick with the Web-Head even made $2.6 billion simply by having the Spider-Man for every kid who grew up in the past 25 years on screen at once.
Still, that acutely youthful quality was on my mind more than usual while watching Sony Animation’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. For more than any other film about the wallcrawler to date, in animation or live-action, this film understands the anxieties and ecstasies which inform Spidey’s power fantasy. That is all the more remarkable, too, since Across the Spider-Verse paradoxically sketches the most mature portrait of the concept we’ve seen on the big screen.
Take for instance a scene of Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) and Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) hanging beneath the marble dome of the Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower. It...

June kicks off this weekend with another anticipated sequel, this one being “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” continuing on from the Oscar-winning animated feature from 2018. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
It was pretty apparent when Sony’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” managed to gross $190 million domestically and roughly the same amount overseas, before winning the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, that the filmmakers would try to continue the story of Miles Morales, as voiced by Shameik Moore. “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” continues Miles’ story as he reunites with Gwen Stacy (voiced by Halle Steinfeld) and the Jake Johnson-voiced “Peter B. Parker.” The sequel also introduces Oscar Isaac voicing Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099, and Issa Rae voicing Jessica Drew aka Spider-Woman, and it was just announced that Andy Samberg is voicing Ben Reilly aka Scarlet Spider with Karan Soni voicing Spider-Man India and Amandla Stenberg also voicing a role.

By the time of the release of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in 2018, the concept of the multiverse had already become virtually ubiquitous in mainstream culture. It’s been a major plot point in most of the recent MCU films and even played a crucial role in this year’s best picture winner, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s Everything Everywhere All at Once. If the novelty of a multiverse setting has lost much of its luster of late, Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse arrives, with its splashy colors, shapeshifting animation styles, and hyperkinetic sense of constant movement, as a forceful reminder of its narrative and aesthetic possibilities.

For years, fans have been wondering if Miles Morales would make his way into live-action. But if producer Amy Pascal is to be believed, that wait may soon be over.
While speaking with Variety during the red carpet premiere of "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" in Los Angeles last night, Pascal -- who has produced all of the Tom Holland "Spider-Man" films, the two "Venom" movies, and the two "Spider-Verse" films -- said there are even more Spider-projects on the way.
When Variety's interviewer apparently asked if a live-action Miles Morales movie is in the works, she confirmed it is, saying, "You'll see all of it. It's all happening."
That's great news -- if it's actually true. It would certainly make financial sense for Sony to double down on its Spider-properties and mine that IP for as much as it possibly can, especially given how popular Miles has become in the wake of these animated films.

Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse is a film that is as visually stunning as it is philosophical. After the first chapter of Miles Morales’ journey in 2018, (Into The Spider-Verse) directors Kemp Powers, Justin K. Thompson, and Joaquim Dos Santos bring the spectacle that is nothing short of a woven tapestry of comic book realness. With an action-packed concept, it’s a roller-coaster ride through alternate realities and timelines as the viewer is introduced to hundreds of Spider-people.
Written by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Dave Callaham, this movie hosts a stacked voice, including Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Daniel Kaluuya, Issa Rea, Oscar Issac, Jake Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Jason Schwartzman, Karan Soni, Luna Lauren Velez, Shea Wigham, and Andy Samberg.
The film starts with a bit of backstory on Gwen Stacy, aka Spider-Gwen (Steinfeld) in Earth-65, and how she gained her powers, in addition to what happened to Peter Parker from her universe.

Every world gets the Spider-Man it deserves. And here on Earth-1610, our webslinger is one Miles Morales: a half-Black, half-Puerto Rican teen who loves graffiti, Air Jordans, and quantum physics. Like most Spider-Folk, he was bit by a radioactive arachnid, developed the ability to crawl up walls and sense oncoming danger, ginned himself up some shooters and a suit, and learned that with great power came great responsibility. He also managed to save the many multiverses from collapsing in on each other, after a handful of other interdimensional Spideys — Spider-Gwen,...

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” is awash in stories — its first five or so minutes, an ostensible prologue, is a dynamic tragedy in miniature, and that’s just the first five minutes — all built around an idea one of its characters tosses out during a similarly information-packed voiceover: They’re going to “do things differently.” It’s precisely what the film’s predecessor, the rightly Oscar-winning “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” did four years ago, taking a well-worn concept (a Spider-Man origin story? again?) and turning it into an actual masterpiece built on a wealth of stories, new and old, told with legitimate energy and innovation. And it’s what Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson attempt to replicate in their sequel, an aim that pays off mightily.

In Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Miles Morales is all grown up. Well, sort of.
The events of the second chapter of the Spider-Verse series, sleekly directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson, take place a year after a radioactive spider bit our protagonist’s hand. Since then, the arachnoid warrior (voiced by Shameik Moore) has grown into his powers and superhero responsibilities. Miles shoots silk threads with more precision, swings across the city skyline more smoothly and can make himself disappear on command (instead of at random, inconvenient times). He’s also got a better handle on the saving the world shtick.
But Miles, now 15, is also a teenager, which means protecting New Yorkers isn’t his only concern. When not chasing foes or signing brand deals, he’s attending classes at his tony magnet school, preparing to apply to college and trying to find...

We're a little over a week out from the release of "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" — the highly-anticipated sequel to the 2018 Oscar-winning movie — and the first reactions to the film have arrived on social media. And according to critics who were lucky enough to catch an early screening, "Across the Spider-Verse" is "terrific," an "incredible accomplishment," and the "ultimate Spider-Man experience." As you might've expected, everyone is going ga-ga over the work put into the animation, noting how it's "impossible to see it all [and] experience it all in one sitting."
Collider's Steven Weintraub echoed that with his reaction: "Absolutely loved ['Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.'] Wanted to push pause about a hundred times to study the incredible artistry on display. Cannot recommend this film enough and already looking forward to seeing it again." Characters being highlighted include "Get Out" star Daniel Kaluuya's Hobart "Hobie" Brown/Spider-Punk who uses a guitar as a weapon,...

Miles Morales and the Spider-People Are Ready For Adventure in New "Across the Spider-Verse" Posters

The Spider-Verse is getting a massive expansion in "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," the animated sequel to the Oscar-winning film "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse."
Sony Pictures debuted the first official clip on Dec. 13, 2022, and in it, Shameik Moore's Miles Morales returns for an action-packed adventure that involves him and a whole lot of Spider-Men - also pictured in the film's poster that Sony released on April 26. This seems on par with what film producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller shared of the sequel at CinemaCon 2022, teasing that it's getting "way, way, way bigger."
The second official "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" trailer was released on April 4, 2023, teasing more shots of the movie's multitude of Spider-People and Miles's goal to control his own destiny. "Everyone keeps telling me how my story is supposed to go. Nah, I'm going to do my own thing," he says in the new three-minute preview.

High Evolutionary In ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy,’ Explained: Is He The Best MCU Villain Since Endgame?
Mainstream pop culture-oriented movies have been obsessed with portraying antagonists with sympathetic backstories for almost a few decades now, and while that provides a chance for compelling storytelling by making the audience root for the adversary, it has become too repetitive at this point. In the MCU, this trend is particularly perceivable where any mention-worthy antagonistic performance like the mad Titan Thanos or the justifiable terrorist Eric Killmonger falls under the same trope, and even the maniacal Green Goblin was excused by his split personality disorder. Every once in a while, viewers need adversaries whom they can truly loathe, whose moral compass is so askew, and whose calculative actions and motivations are so vile that the binary between opposing forces seems really prominent. Thankfully, James Gunn introduced one such antagonist through the character Herbert Wyndham, aka High Evolutionary, in his latest release, Guardians of the Galaxy 3, a character irredeemably deplorable...

The 2018 animated adventure comedy "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" was an audacious kick in the pants that brought Marvel's comics to life in astonishing new ways. It managed to not only be one of the earliest and best examples of the current boom in multiverse stories, but it also was just a darn good time at the movies. It was the cure for my superhero fatigue, and the latest trailer for the upcoming sequel, "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," has me excited for more.
The new trailer shows some of the same moments and characters as previous trailers, but it also gives us a look at a few new characters and seems to confirm that someone in Miles Morales' life is going to face the same fate as Peter Parker's Uncle Ben. That's pretty dark stuff, but the trailer also has a lot of gorgeous art to look at and plenty of...
