Found lurking on library shelves and hiding in musty basements, books open doorways to new worlds we never knew existed, enriching our imaginations while paralyzing our bodies in fear. While stories told on screen can haunt our dreams for decades, what's printed on paper often squirms under our skin to dig into the dark corners of our psyches with the appetite of a living dead bookworm. From R.L. Stine's frightening tales for young readers to the haunting works of Stephen King and Shirley Jackson, the Corpse Club looks back on some of their favorite horror books and authors in a new episode of Daily Dead's podcast.

Back in 1982, George A. Romero and Stephen King introduced viewers to a different kind of cake, a deadly creature in a crate, and mysterious "meteor shit" that wouldn't come off no matter how hard you scrubbed. Nearly 35 years after its initial release, Creepshow is still widely regarded as one of the best (if not the best) horror anthologies, giving the Corpse Club plenty of cinematic moments to celebrate on their new episode, which also includes a look back at other beloved anthology films.
"Where's my cake?" In episode 25 of Corpse Club, co-hosts Patrick Bromley, Heather Wixson, Scott Drebit, Derek Anderson, and Jonathan James celebrate 35 years of George A. He forever changed the landscape of horror when he introduced viewers to the cannibalistic Sawyer family in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, but Tobe Hooper's filmmaking career took him far beyond that frightening farmhouse to show viewers that horrors could also be found in space, in sideshow attractions, and even within the suburbs. Like many cinema lovers, the Daily Dead team was deeply saddened by the news of Hooper's passing at the age of 74, and to pay tribute to the fearless filmmaker, we reflect on his eclectic career on the latest episode of our podcast.

When the end of each summer approaches, it's time to sharpen your pencils, polish your apples, and make sure you stay on the good side of any telekinetic classmates. It was a year when teenagers stood up to the boogeyman that haunted their dreams, when commandos met their otherworldly match in the jungle, and when a group of monster-loving kids saved their town from the very same creatures they admired. In a decade that truly embraced scares on the big screen, 1987 was a standout year for theatrical horror, and on a new episode of Corpse Club, the ghoulish gang discusses the eclectic and altogether eerie Class of ’87, which we've been celebrating this summer on Daily Dead.

In 1987, bloodsuckers hit the big screen in two immensely different vampire movies: The Lost Boys and Near Dark. The former featured a vibrant beachside setting, an epic saxophone solo, and "death by stereo." The latter took place in quiet small towns and showed the mean, messy, and murderous price to be paid for immortality. Nearly 30 years later, both movies are still beloved by fans, making this the perfect time for the Corpse Club to make sure that we, like Tim Cappello, "still believe," as we celebrate two of the most memorable horror movies of 1987.

An eye-opening, or should I say door-opening, Q&A with the director of Never Open the Door courtesy of our very own Derek Anderson kicks off today's Horror Highlights! Also, we have trailers for both Pitchfork and Red Hollow and a call for submissions for Popcorn Fright Film Festival 2017.
Never Open the Door Q&A: Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Vito. When did you first come up with the idea for Never Open the Door?
Vito Trabucco: Thanks for having me. The idea first came from Chris Maltauro, my producer and co-writer, our camera operator Mike Bates, and me one night in a parking lot when we wrapped on another shoot. A few months prior I completed my first feature, Bloody Bloody Bible Camp. We were just eager to do another one.
Where did filming take place and what did that environment add...

The horror genre had quite the year in 1986. Jason Voorhees climbed out of his coffin, scientist Seth Brundle tinkered with teleportation, two Tobe Hooper films were released in theaters, and Stephen King's directorial debut burned rubber on the big screen. In our new, free issue of Deadly Magazine, we revisit some of the genre's most memorable movies from that magical mid-’80s year with the people that helped make them. Welcome to the 30-year reunion for the Class of 1986.
Within the pages of this Deadly Magazine issue, you'll find retrospectives and interviews that shine spotlights on some of the most celebrated, and in some cases, underrated, films from 1986.
Scott Weinberg's interview with Barbara Crampton offers an intriguing look at the making of Stuart Gordon's other H.P. Lovecraft adaptation, From Beyond. Scott Drebit enrolls at Slaughter High to give his grade on the school-set slasher. Joseph Maddrey sits...

A few of us from the Daily Dead team ventured to Petco Park last night to see if we could evade hordes of zombies during this year's The Walking Dead Escape. As always, it was another fun year, and they mixed it up with some pretty inventive zombie choke points and an appearance by the foul-mouthed, Lucille-wielding Negan. Check out our photo gallery and impressions from Derek Anderson, who experienced The Walking Dead Escape for the very first time:

Impressions: The Walking Dead Escape
We can’t see them yet, but we know they’re up ahead, just out of sight. A survivor with a megaphone leads the way, instructing us to stay close and be swift as we gather supplies. We see the blood splatter and dismembered bodies just before they come into view. Their eyes latch onto us, their blood-smeared hands reaching out for their next meal. We run deeper into Petco Park.
