Recently screened as part of Tribeca 2023, Noam Kaplan’s latest film, The Future, follows three women whose lives intersect at moments which present different challenges for each of them. Nurit (Reymonde Amsallem) is an Israeli criminal profiler and the designer of a new piece of software which is supposed to be able to identify terrorists by analysing their movements and behaviour. Yaffa (Samar Qupty) is a young Palestinian woman whose assassination of the Minister for Space and Tourism she failed to predict. Then there’s Maor (Dar Zuzovsky), whom Nurit is getting to know with a view to using her services as a surrogate so that she can experience motherhood. Over the course of a few weeks we observe their conversations and the way that they – especially Nurit – change as a result, whilst in the background, an Israeli space venture is attempting to put a man.

Kicking off next month, Tribeca Festival can often be difficult to navigate with its many sections and sidebars, but steering away from some of the star-studded films that take up the spotlight, its strongest offerings are usually in the international sections. Today we’re pleased to exclusively debut the trailer for Noam Kaplan’s second feature The Future, which will world premiere in the International Narrative Competition section. Starring Reymonde Amsellem, Samar Qupty, Dar Zuzovsky, Aviva Ger, and Salwa Nakkara, the film follows a world-renowned profiler who is on a mission to study the motives of a young Palestinian woman who assassinated the Israeli Minister of Space and Tourism. From their intense encounter emerges a deep examination of female identity and motherhood.
Here’s the Tribeca synopsis: “When Israel’s Minister of Space and Tourism is murdered in the lead-up to the country’s first mission to the moon, Yaffa...

Bargain, Carthago, Curduroy’ among big winners.
Norwegian political satire Power Play was named best series as the sixth annual Canneseries (April 14-19) came to a close on the Riveria.
The series from Norway’s Nrk was the last of the 10-strong competition titles to screen at the six-day event, but triumphed with the festival’s top prize in addition to the award for best music that jury member and The Police drummer Stewart Copeland called “downright revolutionary”.
Power Play is based on the true story of the bid to become prime minster by pro-abortion ecologist politician Gro Harlem Brundtland in the 1970’s and 1980’s.

Norwegian political satire “Power Play” proved unbeatable at Canneseries, just like its headstrong protagonist, picking up awards for best series and music.
The show, focusing on Norway’s first female Prime Minister, Gro Harlem Brundtland, and starting out in the 1970s, turned out to be a timely proposition, as noted by showrunner Johan Fasting, who co-wrote with Silje Storstein and Kristin Grue.
“It’s hard to persevere in politics, especially for women. We wanted to go behind the scenes of social democracy as well, see how it has dissolved and turned into what we have today. It felt like the right time to look at the mechanisms of power,” he told Variety earlier this week.
While the show delves into local politics, its youthful “punk” attitude and humor, which already drew early comparisons to the works of Armando Iannucci, seems to have paid off, seducing jurors Lior Raz, Zabou Breitman,...

Italy’s Kino Produzioni, the indie shingle that co-produced 2022 Berlin Golden Bear winner “Alcarràs,” is ramping up production with new films by emerging Italian filmmakers Carlo Sironi, Laura Luchetti and Irene Dionisio, as well as also Dutch director Michiel Van Erp and Argentine filmmakers María Alché and Benjamín Naishtat.
“We reached a turning point last year that started out well with the ‘Alcarràs’ victory,” said Kino chief Giovanni Pompili, speaking at the EFM. He noted that in 2022, the Rome-based outfit shot four films, “which for us was pretty challenging, but worked out well.”
Meanwhile, the Kino team has grown. Producer Lara Costa-Calzado, who has been working for a decade between the U.S. and Europe on films such as Eliza Hittman’s Silver Bear winner “Never Rarely Sometimes Always,” Sally Potter’s “The Roads Not Taken” and Halina Rejin’s “Bodies Bodies Bodies,” has joined Kino as head of production.

In the late 1940s, when Barry Levinson was a young boy, his family hosted a guest — his grandmother’s brother. The man’s name was Simka, and he shared a room with Levinson for a two-week period before moving away. Levinson remembers the man thrashing in his sleep and mumbling in a foreign language for some reason, but, as a young boy, he couldn’t understand why.
It wasn’t until years later that he learned that Simka was a survivor of the Holocaust, and his fits were a symptom of what is now recognized as post-traumatic stress disorder. Those memories came flooding back to Levinson when he first read Justine Juell Gillmer’s screenplay of “The Survivor.”
Levinson’s latest film, premiering April 27 on HBO, stars Ben Foster as Harry Haft, a real man who survived Auschwitz by boxing other prisoners at the behest of the Nazis. After making it out alive,...

HBO Films has acquired the North American rights to “The Survivor,” a Harry Haft biopic produced and directed by Academy Award winner Barry Levinson. The deal comes after the film premiered at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival in September.
Based on Alan Haft’s book “Harry Haft: Survivor of Auschwitz, Challenger of Rocky Marciano,” “The Survivor” stars Ben Foster as Haft, an escaped Auschwitz prisoner who is forced to perform in boxing matches by his captor before moving to New York and using his boxing skills to help find the woman he loves.
Along with Foster, “The Survivor” also stars Vicky Krieps (“Phantom Thread”), Billy Magnussen (“No Time to Die”), Peter Sarsgaard (“Jackie”), Saro Emirze (“Wilsberg”), Dar Zuzovsky (“Hostages”), Danny DeVito (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) and John Leguizamo (“Latin History for Morons”).

It’s common to talk about an actor disappearing into a role by undergoing a physical transformation – at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, you could say that’s what Jessica Chastain does for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.” But Ben Foster’s transformation in Barry Levinson’s “The Survivor,” which had its world premiere at TIFF on Monday, is something different — because he morphs into Holocaust survivor Harry Haft from two different directions in the same film.
In scenes set in the latter stages of Haft’s life, Foster is doughy and sluggish, only slightly recognizable as the actor we know from films like “The Messenger” and “Leave No Trace.” In scenes set during World War II, when Haft was an inmate at the Auschwitz concentration camp, he’s skeletal and sinewy, with the real Foster just as hard to see. (He lost 62 pounds for those scenes.) It...

Barry Levinson knows from comedy. He began his career writing for Marty Feldman, Carol Burnett and Mel Brooks. Then brought us “Diner,” “Good Morning Vietnam” and one of my favorites, the dark and prescient “Wag The Dog.” So when he says a new film about a Palestinian soap opera is funny, I believe him. He hosted a recent industry screening in Manhattan’s Landmark Theater for “Tel Aviv On Fire.” How do you get a legendary writer and director to support your film? Mail it to him. “I was sent a screener to take a look at and I thought it was really fascinating,” he revealed. “And I thought the approach to the issues of the region were done in a way that’s so unexpected and so humanistic I was just quite taken by it.”

‘Harry Haft’ First Look: Ben Foster and Vicky Krieps Star in Barry Levinson’s True-Life Boxing Drama
After another transformative year, “Leave No Trace” and “Hell or High Water” star Ben Foster is slipping into one more immersive role. Foster is currently shooting Barry Levinson’s fact-based drama “Harry Haft,” which sees the actor taking on yet another demanding part, the kind the actor seems to thrive on. Based on the true story of Haft — which was dramatized in the novel “Harry Haft: Survivor of Auschwitz, Challenger of Rocky Marciano” by Alan Scott Haft, Haft’s own son — the film will weave together the incredible drama of Haft’s life, from his time spent in Auschwitz to his eventual escape to New York City and its brutal professional boxing scene, all in hopes of recapturing a great lost love.
Per its current synopsis, the film follows Harry Haft, “who is driven by his love of a woman to survive the unimaginable horrors of the German concentration camps.

Exclusive: When Deadline first revealed the fact-based historical drama Harry Haft was being put together by Bron Studios and New Mandate Films with Barry Levinson directing and Ben Foster starring, the premise seemed impossible to imagine. Based on the Justine Juel Gillmer Black List script adaptation of the Alan Scott Haft novel Harry Haft: Survivor of Auschwitz, Challenger of Rocky Marciano, the film tells the story of a boxer who survived Auschwitz by being forced to fight fellow prisoners in the concentration camps in ghoulish gladiatorial battles. If he won, he got fed and allowed to live long enough for the next bout, while the 76 opponents he beat were led to their deaths in the camps. Haunted by the memories and guilt over the price of survival, Haft attempts to use high-profile fights against boxing legends like Rocky Marciano as a way to rediscover a reason to live and to...

Last week it was reported that Marvel Studios was looking at Emma Watson (Harry Potter), Alice Englert (Beautiful Creatures), Dar Zuzovsky (Hostages, Neighborhood), and Florence Pugh (Fighting With My Family) to star alongside Scarlett Johansson in Black Widow.
Well, THR is reporting that Pugh is their choice and she is now in talks to join the movie. She was my favorite choice of the names mentioned above, so I’m pretty happy that she is the one that the studio went with. One of the reasons why the studio went with her was because of the strong reviews that she’s been getting for her role in Fighting With My Family.
The second female in Black Widow has been described as a “kick ass female Bond” type character. They were looking for an actress that is capable of a playing a physically demanding role who is said to also “feel similar to star Scarlet Johansson.

Casting rumors aplenty, as Marvel starts gearing up for the McU's Black Widow standalone film...
Kevin Feige and his Marvel team would like to keep any big announcements about Phase 4 of the McU to themselves until after the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home this summer, but if they want to get a movie or two out in 2020, it's going to be near-impossible to keep all their cards close to their chests until then.
Case in point, the proposed Black Widow solo movie looks like it's starting to round up a cast of choice applicants for roles to surround Scarlett Johansson in her first standalone spy adventure as former Russian assassin, Natasha Romanoff, aka Natalie Rushman, Laura Matthers, Mary Farrell, Natalia Alianovna Romanova, Oktober, Yelena Belova, etc. The gal's had a lot of aliases!

Going by a recent Production Weekly listing, the long-awaited Black Widow solo movie is set begin filming in June, suggesting that Marvel Studios and director Cate Shortland still have a few more months to get a cast together. And according to a new report from That Hashtag Show, Emma Watson of Beauty and the Beast and Harry Potter fame is currently the frontrunner for one of the main roles.
Last year, Ths reported that the script for Natasha Romanoff’s first standalone outing calls for a “kick ass female Bond,” and in a piece published earlier today, the site offered an update alleging that Alice Englert (Beautiful Creatures), Dar Zuzovsky (Hostages) and Florence Pugh (Fighting With my Family) are all in the running for the part. Headlining the list, however, is reportedly Watson, whose name is said to be “prominent in discussions” between Shortland and producers Brad Winderbaum and Kevin Feige.
