Leah (Kiera Thompson – The Emily Atack Show) feels like a stranger in her own home – a large, creaky, old Victorian vicarage where she lives with her distant mother Sarah (Denise Gough) and distracted father Thomas. Leah’s days are spent tip-toeing the house in isolation, where during the night, the dark empty spaces provide plenty of room for her nightmares to creep in.
One night, Leah is visited by a mysterious young girl in a white dress, who offers her a sense of comfort. In the hope that her shadowy guest might be able to answer some questions about Leah’s absent mother, the two girls begin to play a game. But fun quickly becomes fearsome as Leah realises that her guest holds knowledge that could be incredibly dangerous…

Ten-year-old Leah (Kiera Thompson) is caught watching her family like an outsider looking in. Her much older sister (Hannah Rae’s Bex) is about to leave for college and the milestone has seemingly thrown a wrench into their otherwise simple lives. While their father Thomas (Steven Cree) treats it like a celebration, thanks to his faith as the pastor of their local church, their mother Sarah (Denise Gough) appears distracted and perhaps even angry. She begins having nightmares, retreats from others, and becomes lost in a past Leah knows nothing about. Whether coincidence or fate drives the young girl to unearth the answer from within the locket Sarah wears around her neck is up to you to decide. Once it’s out, however, there’s no putting it back.

Ghost stories have been a staple of the horror genre since its inception. It’s the fact that these films deal with an enemy unseen that frightens many and has kept these stories around for so long. But how many ways can you tell a ghost story? They can all be similar, but it’s even more frightening when the film involves children. What makes kids, kids – their innocence and trust-worthiness – makes them unaware of the dangers that are out there. Ruth Platt’s Martyrs Lane centers on two children and their friendship, one dead and one living. It's a ghost story mixed with fairy tale elements to emphasize how children see the world differently – until it turns dark. Built upon Platt’s short film of the same name, Martyrs Lane explores love and grief through the lens of a captivating and unsettling haunting, with many secrets to uncover.

"What's happening? Please go! I don't want you here!" Shudder has unveiled an official trailer for an indie supernatural fairytale horror film titled Martyrs Lane, the latest feature directed by actress / filmmaker Ruth Platt. Based on her own 2019 short film. This just premiered at the Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal this month. Leah, age 10, lives in a large vicarage, full of lost souls and the needy. In the day the house is bustling with people; at night it is dark, empty, a space for Leah's nightmares to creep into. A small, nightly visitor brings Leah comfort, but soon she will realize that her little visitor offers knowledge that might be very, very dangerous... This stars young actors Kiera Thompson & Sienna Sayer, with Denise Gough, Steven Cree, Hannah Rae, and Anastasia Hille. Cinema abounds with teenagers and young couples running from supernatural terrors, pitting their own will to survives against seemingly implacable foes, but that’s lightweight stuff. To have a child is to know a different kind of fear, and sometimes what is almost a child is even worse. As Elizabeth Barret Browning wrote, “Show me Michael with the sword/Rather than such angels, Lord.”
Leah (Kiera Thompson) is a child of flesh and blood and no shortage of spirit, a keen explorer, investigator and discoverer of strange things. She lives in a crumbling old rectory with her vicar father, strangely distant mother and big sister Bex (Hannah Rae), who is shortly due to depart for university. Everybody is busy and preoccupied with something or other, so Leah is left to wander, often lonely, making her own entertainment, trying to make sense of confusing rules which see all sorts of things labelled off bounds.

Writer-director Emily Harris’s version of Le Fanu’s vampire novella adds a feminist focus on repression but sparks don’t fly
This revisionist adaptation of Sheridan Le Fanu’s 1871 vampire novella joins Andrea Arnold’s Wuthering Heights and Lady Macbeth in the newish tradition of bonnet-free literary adaptations: modern-feeling period films abandoning coy glances for earthy passions and marriage fantasy fulfilment for a harsher portrait of domestic life for women in the past. Le Fanu’s book was the inspiration for Dracula’s harloty wives in the 70s Hammer films, but with a new-school feminist spin writer-director Emily Harris strips away the vampirism to focus on sexuality and repression. It’s a smart move, but her creepily atmospheric film is let down by some awkward dialogue and a weirdly bloodless lack of intimacy.

One of vampire fiction’s earliest works, Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu kicked off the genre almost 30 years before Bram Stoker’s Dracula hit bookshelves. The story is about a young woman who’s preyed upon by a female vampire named Carmilla. It’s the prototypical example of a lesbian vampire narrative, which, since its publication in 1872, has spawned direct adaptations and inspired many others’ stories. In this latest take on the novella, writer-director Emily Harris strips Carmilla of its vampiric roots. It does carry the dark tone of Le Fanu’s work, but it’s not a horror film, it’s a period romance. By removing it from the vampire canon, Harris unintentionally retreats to the depiction of lesbianism that was hotly criticized when lesbian vampire films first began.

That’s certainly the case for the young protagonist and her intriguing new visitor in the new horror film, ‘Carmilla,’ which was inspired by the 1872 Gothic novella of the same name by Joseph […]

"After we die... what then?" Film Movement has released an official Us trailer for the indie fantasy drama film titled Carmilla, which is "inspired by" Sheridan Le Fanu’s classic Gothic vampire novella of the same name. It is better, I suppose, to see someone fail at doing something interesting than to see someone succeed in doing something dull. Carmilla, written and directed by Emily Harris, is a flawed film, but it's a pretty noble failure.
The story, a Gothic horror based on the 1872 novella by Sheridan Le Fanu, concerns a lonely teenage girl named Lara (Hannah Rae), who shares a country estate with her father and her cruel governess, Miss Fontaine (Jessica Raine - The Woman in Black). When we are introduced to Lara, she is having her left hand bound behind her back to encourage her to use her right - the left hand being connected to the devil and witchcraft. This is the first sign of just how stifling and restrictive life in her deeply Christian household can be.

A change of pace from the usual action-driven output from WWE studios, “Fighting With My Family” at times more closely brings to mind 2000’s guilty-pleasure comedy “Ready to Rumble,” one of the few filmmaking ventures by the wrestling conglomerate’s then-rival WCW. The current film has some of the same crotch-kick-level humor, and much of the same shameless brand self-promotion, if regrettably none of David Arquette’s inimitable spazardry. But there’s less guilt in this pleasure — in fact, it’s probably the best of the 50-odd movies WWE has produced since 2002’s “The Scorpion King,” which starred this film’s producer, Dwayne Johnson, who steps briefly into the action here.

Hannah Rae (Broadchurch) is set as a series regular opposite Elisabeth Shue in TNT’s drama pilot Constance, from Team Downey, Sonar Entertainment and Studio T.
Written by Kc Perry and directed by Jesse Peretz, Constance is a fun, darkly humorous, veneer-stripping story about one woman’s refusal to fade into obsolescence. It follows former beauty queen-turned-small town bureaucrat, Constance Young (Shue), whose life is thrown into turmoil after her husband’s mysterious death. Realizing she and her family are on the verge of financial ruin, Constance turns to cooking the books at City Hall, while simultaneously trying to reinvent herself through the hyper-competitive world of direct-sales cosmetics. Kevin Dunn co-stars as Constance’s boss at City Hall and Gless as Constance’s mother.
Rae plays Hannah Olivia Young. She’s Constance’s (Shue) ultra-competitive, somewhat disaffected and precociously snarky daughter, who uses pageant wins as her golden ticket out of this sleepy beach town.

“Broadchurch” wraps up a three-season arc by pulling off an ambitious storyline about rape that is as devastating as it is instructive.
It’s a fitting capper to a series that uses the sleepy Dorset town of Broadchurch as a microcosm to examine society’s ills. On the show, it’s been five years since the killing of local boy Danny Latimer, a devastating storyline that consumed “Broadchurch’s” excellent Season 1. [The less cohesive Season 2, which took place three years later, went off the rails a bit with Danny’s subsequent murder trial.]
Creator and writer Chris Chibnall guides “Broadchurch” steadily back home to finish off the trilogy with the help of his detective duo Alex Hardy (David Tennant) and Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman), who provide the only humor on the show through their comfortable and mutually irascible personalities. We’re going to miss their banter.

"People call me a snoop. They call me a lot worse. Broken marriages, missing kids. Nothing major, just the sacred and profane." An official UK trailer has arrived online for an indie film titled City of Tiny Lights, a "Scorsese-like" crime thriller about a private eye in London. Riz Ahmed (seen in Rogue One and Jason Bourne) plays Tommy Akhtar, who takes on a seemingly straight-forward missing person's case only to get pulled deeper into the underbelly of modern London. The full cast includes Billie Piper, Cush Jumbo, Hannah Rae, Roshan Seth, and James Floyd. This is from the same director of Dredd, a movie which I was very fond of. The film played at the Toronto and London Film Festivals last year, and it looks pretty damn good. Plus, Riz Ahmed is awesome and it's great to see him in a strong lead role. Take a look below. Here's...

City of Tiny Lights is a noir inspired London thriller directed by Pete Travis, based on the novel by Patrick Neate which stars Riz Ahmed (currently to be seen on Netflix starring in the much-acclaimed The Night of), Cush Jumbo, and Billie Piper.
As the film moves through present day multicultural London, it also cuts back to Tommy's youth in 1997, telling the story of his friendship with a lad called Lovely (Antonio Aakeel), his mate Stuart (George Sargeant) and his growing love for Stuart's girlfriend, Shelley (Hannah Rae).
The filmmakers spent almost five months searching for the youngsters, cast by Celestia Fox. Beyond conventional casting methods they trawled youth clubs, theatre's and schools in search for the perfect young ensemble.
Playing the younger Riz Ahmed is newcomer Reiss Kershi-Hussain (represented by Shepherd Management) who had no previous acting experience before being cast as the impressionable young Tommy.

Small-time private detective Tommy Akhtar (Riz Ahmed) has all the swagger of a hard-boiled snoop: leather jacket on his shoulders and cigarette in his mouth, leaning against London architecture in the darkened night. His office resides above some shops, he makes friendly with local convenience store owner Mrs. Elbaz (Myriam Acharki), and asks new clients where they found him because he’s not advertising in the paper. But while he’s good at his work and enjoys the struggle if only to get out of his father’s (Roshan Seth‘s Farzad) house when the old man starts using cricket metaphors to explain life, Tommy has yet to completely run away from his past. It is the “googly ball” of his life, a blind spot that’s never been more apparent until now.
