Anthony Hopkins winning Best Actor over Chadwick Boseman was about as big a shocker as it gets
The ending of the 93rd Academy Awards was quite a shocker, with a run of show that shifted Best Actor to the final award of the night — prompting many to assume they did so because Chadwick Boseman posthumously was going to win the Oscar for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”
It made sense. It would have been a touching way to end the show, and to pay tribute to a beloved star who died last year of cancer.
But the assumption that they moved Best Actor to the end in place of Best Picture was based on the idea the powers running the Oscars ceremony actually knew for sure who was gonna win. And if they were hoping for a Boseman victory, they made a big mistake.

A lucky few have gotten a first look at Patty Jenkins’ upcoming sequel “Wonder Woman 1984,” which Warner Bros. is releasing day and date on HBO Max and in whatever theaters are possible. First reactions to the film, with Gal Gadot reprising her role as Diana Prince, call this latest DC tentpole a joyous and ambitious sequel with a retro ’80s vibe that should please fans. Check out tweets about the movie below.
Gadot is joined by co-stars from the first film, including Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen, and Robin Wright, plus a pair of fresh new villains in the form of franchise newbies Kristen Wiig as Cheetah and Pedro Pascal as Max Lord.
While the DC Extended Universe entry brings back plenty of the elements that made Jenkins’ original “Wonder Woman” such a smash hit back in 2017 — with Jenkins back behind the camera, and Gadot, Pine, and Wright in front...

Action film badass Charlize Theron says there weren’t always opportunities for leading women to thrive in action films, but there has been a “facelift” recently for female action stars that excites her.
“30 years ago, there wasn’t a lot of opportunity for women to do action movies, and the first time that showed itself to me was after I won my Academy Award in 2004,” Theron said on a panel moderated by IGN’s Terri Schwartz during Comic-Con@Home on Friday. “It was hard that there were so many preconceived ideas, and there were so many boxes everyone wanted to squeeze you into, and it was a character that today I think would be celebrated cinematically way more than it was… ‘Mad Max’ really changed the trajectory for me and it made me realize, there is a lot of possibility here, you just have to find the right people who...

Harley Quinn leads her own movie with Birds of Prey, and the early reviews on social media are positive!
These days, DC movies are like a box of chocolates: you never know what you're gonna get. Also, it can be messy. Sometimes, there can more than one layer. Can I be candid? I already regret this analogy.
Much of the recent Warner Bros/DC live-action output has been all over the shop, with the studio once again trying to find their feet in a Marvel-heavy cinematic landscape. Suicide Squad (2016) was a disappointment for most, Wonder Woman (2017) did surprisingly well, Justice League (2017) staggered onto screens after a ton of behind the scenes problems, Aquaman (2018) cashed in more than a billion dollars at the global box office despite some middling reviews, and Shazam! (2019) got a solid thumbs up across the board. Meanwhile, Joker lived in its own version of Gotham past,...

In the lead-up to the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, director J.J. Abrams offered repeated hints that his film was going to serve as a “course correction” of sorts in the wake of 2017’s divisive The Last Jedi, and sure enough, once the Skywalker Saga finale reached theaters, the movie was every bit as apologetic as fans either dreaded or hoped.
We can see Abrams’ attempts to reach out to the detractors in the way his flick essentially undoes one of the boldest twists of The Last Jedi. But more controversial still is how the new movie reduces Rose Tico to a minor supporting player after her major role in the previous film.
After the release of The Last Jedi, actress Kelly Marie Tran was subject to vicious online abuse, ultimately prompting the star to seek therapy and leave social media with no intention of returning. With this backlash in mind,...

And with the world premiere taking place Monday night in Hollywood, we’ve now got a whole bunch of people who have actually seen the thing.
And, of course, a lot of those people tweeted their reactions as soon as they got out of the theater. And, well, those reactions are mostly what you’d expect from people attending the premiere of a new “Star Wars” movie. For the most part, the responses are very positive, though some are less positive than others.

Following “Dumbo” and “Aladdin,” it appears Disney has saved its best remake of 2019 for last with “The Lion King.” The first reactions for Jon Favreau’s adaptation of the 1994 animated classic began pouring in after the movie’s July 9 world premiere and to say they are positive would be an understatement. Critics are already hailing the film as a “visual masterpiece” that quite possibly has the best visual effects in film history. Favreau’s “The Jungle Book” won the Best Visual Effects Oscar and now “The Lion King” looks like the clear frontrunner for 2020.
“‘The Lion King” is a landmark visual experience,” wrote Buzzfeed’s Adam B. Vary. “I’ve never seen anything like it, and I think it’s going to change how we look at movies forever. As an emotional experience, though…I’ll put it this way: It turns out lions can’t really emote.”

The early consensus after the world premiere Tuesday night of Disney’s “The Lion King” remake is that it’s visually staggering, has plenty of heart, and tugs nostalgically on the heartstrings of anyone who saw the 1994 original as a kid.
So hakuna matata, Disney.

It has been five years since Godzilla last stomped across American screens and left fans of the legendary kaiju wanting more, but audiences who saw early screenings of “Godzilla: King of Monsters” say it has all the gigantic creature fights you can handle.
The upcoming film is the third installment in Warner Bros. and Legendary’s MonsterVerse, following 2014’s “Godzilla” and 2017’s “Kong: Skull Island.” The film will see Godzilla return to take on many of his most famous monster rivals from the Toho canon, led by his greatest nemesis, King Ghidorah.
“‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ is the modern day Godzilla movie you’ve been waiting for,” tweeted JoBlo’s Paul Shirey. “It’s everything the 2014 ‘Godzilla’ isn’t, while still retaining the best elements of that film and elevating them x 100. Monstrous action that rattles the theater.”

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is still a few weeks out from release, but now that the film’s social media embargo has lifted, it looks like Michael Dougherty’s blockbuster will be stomping into cinemas with some strong buzz behind it.
While it’s hard to fault the marketing for the upcoming monster movie – which delivered one of the best trailers of 2018 back in July – early box office projections haven’t been particularly kind to the flick. Long range tracking from BoxOfficePro, for example, had the film headed for a domestic debut in the range of $40-$60 million. Granted, that’s nothing to be sniffed at, but seeing how the feature is expected to be the stepping stone to further crossover projects in the MonsterVerse, the figures still leave plenty to be desired.
It may therefore come as a relief to Legendary Pictures that the film’s Twitter response has been largely glowing,...

Each of the trailers for John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum have been met with a glowing response on social media, and now that the film’s first critic reactions have surfaced, it’s beginning to look like the movie might well live up to the hype.
Predictably enough, much of the praise is directed at the set pieces, suggesting that Chad Stahelski’s trilogy-closer is going to continue the franchise’s run as one of the most stylish action properties of recent years. What’s more, it sounds like the upcoming flick is going to deliver some serious canine action that will bring the whole series full circle.
#JohnWick3 is Awesome. Some of the action set pieces are so insane you’ll wonder how director Chad Stahelski and his team filmed them. Saying that, the @Halleberry/#KeanuReeves set piece featuring her dogs might be my favorite. Wait till you see this one.

Once upon a time, the idea of a movie in which Ryan Reynolds voices a tough-talkin’ Pikachu in a cute Sherlock Holmes hat who solves crimes raised considerable eyebrows. After all, Detective Pikachu is a pretty out there concept, and though the Nintendo 3Ds game it’s based on picked up some critical acclaim, many wondered whether this was a smart move for the franchise.
But since then, the movie has been gradually picking up steam. Test audiences reportedly went bonkers for it, financial projections were raised and Legendary Pictures has even begun developing a series of spinoffs. Yes, things bode pretty well for the pic and today, its prospects just got even rosier.
A screening was held in Tokyo earlier this week and the first reactions have now surfaced online. Spoilers: the critics love it.

“Infinity War” may have been the self-proclaimed most ambitious crossover event in history, but it didn’t have Paul Rudd. “Ant-Man and the Wasp” does, however, and that appears to be to its credit. The first wave of reactions to Marvel’s latest has arrived — full reviews will follow next week — and early word is largely positive: It’s been called everything from “fun, funny, and forgettable” to “a damn delight,” with much of the praise going to its post-credits scene.
Ant-man And The Wasp is probably the closest Marvel will ever get to #nicecore. there’s no villain! just… mild impediments. And teamwork! I love teamwork.
everyone says “quantum” a lot, and then they joke *about* how everyone says “quantum” a lot. fun, funny, and forgettable.

Ant-man And The Wasp: It is refreshing to see a self-contained, relatively small-scale franchise film in this crowded summer.
