eOne has been stepping up its IP drive since it was acquired by Hasbro at the end of 2019.

The History Channel has ordered a two-hour documentary film called ‘Tulsa Burning” about the 1921 Greenwood massacre in Tulsa, one of the worst acts of racist violence in American history.
The documentary will be directed by “Freedom Riders” filmmaker Stanley Nelson along with duPont Award winner Marco Williams, and NBA superstar Russell Westbrook will executive produce the documentary along with Donnell Beverly, president of Russell Westbrook Enterprises.
“Tulsa Burning: The 1921 Race Massacre” (working title) will debut later this summer to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the massacre, in which a mob of white residents, many of them even deputized by city officials, attacked Black residents and burned local businesses and houses to the ground, destroying what was the wealthiest Black neighborhood in the country at the time known as “Black Wall Street.” Initial reports from the time recorded 36 people dead and thousands of Black residents interned in hospitals and large facilities.

Coronavirus stay-at-home orders dramatically impacted television viewing habits, driving up consumption of just about every genre of programming, including documentary. The resulting huge audience numbers and media attention generated by Tiger King and The Last Dance could give those nonfiction series a leg-up as Emmy voters prepare to mark their nomination ballots.
Tiger King, the seven-part series on “murder, mayhem and madness” in the eccentric world of big cat breeders and private zoo operators, dropped on Netflix March 20, just as lockdown orders were being imposed across much of the U.S. Director Eric Goode is the first to say people moored in their homes, TV remote in hand, helped turn the series into a cultural phenomenon.
“I do think we all must assume that that’s part of it,” Goode states. “For sure.”

The story of Aaron Hernandez, the New England Patriots star turned convicted murderer, always comes down to why.
Why would Hernandez kill his friend Odin Lloyd, when he was on top of the world after signing a $40 million contract extension with the Patriots? By what means did he avoid accountability for violent outbursts dating back to his college days? How could a person described at times as fun-loving, sensitive and vulnerable flip to homicidal aggression?
Possible answers to those questions emerge in the Netflix documentary series Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez, directed by Geno McDermott. The series, told in three parts, is now in contention for Emmy nominations.
“I think he was living a double life,” McDermott says of Hernandez. “He was able to, during the day, be an amazing athlete, amazing football player. He was able to fold into the Patriots organization. Then at night he was...

It’s always an honor to be one of the titles that premiere on opening night at the Sundance Film Festival, and this year there were eight. Three are available for acquisition: Next selection “Summertime,” Midnight’s “Bad Hair,” and World documentary “The Painter and the Thief” The other five were already spoken for: Music Box had “The Perfect Candidate,” while Netflix had two documentaries and a feature, and Showtime offered the first four episodes of a docuseries. There’s the Barack and Michelle Obama executive-produced “Crip Camp,” the Taylor Swift documentary “Miss Americana” and the French-language “Cuties,” along with Showtime’s “Love Fraud.” And with that outsized presence of what once seemed anomalous — TV and streamers, at Sundance! — there’s a measure of reckoning for the festival long defined as a marketplace for theatrical distributors to pick up indie breakouts and low-budget hidden gems.
Sundance itself is well aware of the potential discrepancy.

At the time of his death, Aaron Hernandez was only 27, but he’d already lived many lives. Born to a middle-class Puerto Rican household in Bristol, Connecticut, Hernandez had been a star in athletics basically as long as he could hold a ball. And by the time he started playing football seriously in high school, everyone around him could tell he was destined to be a star.
But cut forward a few years, and Hernandez’s name was recognizable for a whole different reason. After playing for the University of...

Two years have passed since Aaron Hernandez took his life in a Massachusetts prison and yet the public continues to be fascinated by his life story. Part of this obsession is due to the many unanswered questions left in the wake of his death: Did he kill himself? What was his sexuality?
