Margaret Qualley is no longer going to star in Hulu’s limited series about Amanda Knox, Variety has confirmed.
The untitled series was announced in March with Qualley set to star and executive produce. She has reportedly exited the project due to scheduling conflicts. The role will now be recast.
This is not the first time Hulu has lost its lead actress in a limited series based on a real person. Kate McKinnon was once attached to play Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes in what would become “The Dropout,” the role that was eventually played by Amanda Seyfried. Seyfried would go on to win an Emmy for her work on the show.
Hulu has ordered eight one-hour episodes of the show. The official description states that it is “based on the true story of how Knox was wrongfully convicted for the murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher and her 16-year odyssey to set herself free.

Stillwater director and co-writer Tom McCarthy has made it abundantly clear that in no way, shape or form is the film based on Amanda Knox's experience with the Italian judicial system. In an interview with Variety, published on Friday, Aug. 6, McCarthy reiterated Stillwater was inspired by a number of different stories, and was by no means solely about Knox's wrongful conviction in the murder of Meredith Kercher. As he put it, "It does take from aspects of true life events, like many films, but Stillwater is about Bill Baker's journey, his relationship with his estranged daughter Allison and a French woman and her young daughter he meets along the way." In his new film “Stillwater,” co-writer/director Tom McCarthy wanted to present the image of an American hero – and then turn it on its head. The film, now in theaters, stars Matt Damon as Bill Baker, a roughneck from the titular town in Oklahoma who travels to Marseille, France to visit his imprisoned daughter Allison (Abigail Breslin.) The latest slowburn drama from Tom McCarthy has been picking up plenty of heat, both from Damon's comments about homophobic slurs and from Amanda Knox - the American who was wrongly jailed for four years in Italy after her roommate Meredith Kercher was murdered before being acquitted - whose experience McCarthy has said "inspired his film". Knox doesn't see it that way, arguing the director is "profiting" from her and "distorting her reputation" not to mention "amplifying a false narrative".
Watching the film, you can't help but feel McCarthy is having his cake and eating it somewhat by alluding to the case and drawing on unfounded rumours that took up pages of newsprint at the time while simultaneously claiming distance. Matt Damon’s new movie, Stillwater, opens by building up to a gentle but pointed bit of misdirection, the subtle sort of deviation from our expectations meant to say as much about the audience as it does about the man at the story’s center — something of an running theme for this particular movie. When we first see Bill Baker (Damon), he’s waist-deep in rubble, the recognizable but devastated remains of what used to be someone’s home. Bill is a roughneck from Oklahoma, a state squarely, oft-tragically at the center of that mid-u.

Amanda Knox, the American woman who was convicted and then exonerated of the 2007 murder of her roommate and fellow exchange student while studying in Italy, has called out Tom McCarthy’s new film “Stillwater” for making a “profit” off her life story. In the film, Matt Damon plays an oil rigger and father to a young woman who, while estranged from him and visiting France, is accused of a crime she says she did not commit. While McCarthy has said that the similarities — in that both Knox’s story and the film center around an American tourist swept up in a sensational crime — stop there, Knox blasted the movie in a Medium.com essay as well as on Twitter (see below).

Amanda Knox, an American exchange student who spent nearly four years in Italian prison for the 2007 murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher before being acquitted in 2015, was the inspiration for the just-released “Stillwater,” starring Matt Damon and directed and co-written by Tom McCarthy.
Although “Stillwater” spins a fictitious story, McCarthy has not been shy about name-checking Knox during the press cycle, and a Vanity Fair interview with her name in the headline inspired Knox to take to Twitter on Thursday to slam the film and creative team.
In the film, Abigail Breslin plays Allison Baker, an American foreign exchange student imprisoned in a jail in France after being convicted of murdering her roommate, a plot that shares some — but not all — similarities with Knox’s story. Damon plays Bill, her conservative father, who travels from Oklahoma to Marseille, in the hopes of catching the real killer and setting her free.

Writer-director Tom McCarthy’s movie ‘inspired’ by 2007 murder of British student Meredith Kercher reinforces conspiracy theories about the case, says Knox
Amanda Knox has accused actor Matt Damon and director Tom McCarthy of “rip[ping] off my story without my consent at the expense of my reputation” in the upcoming film Stillwater, which McCarthy has said was inspired by Knox’s experience after the 2007 murder of British student Meredith Kercher in Perugia, Italy.
In an essay on the online publishing platform Medium, Knox takes particular aim at McCarthy, who told Vanity Fair that Stillwater was directly inspired by the Kercher case, which resulted in Knox being wrongly convicted for Kercher’s murder along with her then boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, and spending four years in prison, before ultimately being acquitted in 2015 by Italy’s supreme court of cassation. Rudy Guede, who was sentenced to 16 years in prison in 2008, is the only person convicted of Kercher’s murder.

As roughneck Bill Baker, he wears the signifiers of a blue-collar Oklahoman—a thick goatee, a camo-colored baseball cap, an eagle-clutched skull tattoo, a sturdy pair of jeans. He strides with a cowboy’s gait and talks in muttery, southern tones. After a long day of working construction, cleaning up houses wrecked by tornadoes, he chews on a cigarette and pulls his pickup into the local Sonic drive-thru. At home, he says a small prayer, quietly eats his hot dog, and falls asleep on the couch.
It’s a transformation—in look and presence—that occurs so immediately and comprehensively that it seems like an optical illusion. At first glance, he comes across as a Middle America cosplayer, treading close to the edge of parody. But the intrigue of...

Matt Damon said he felt “a little overwhelmed” at yesterday’s Cannes premiere for his new film Stillwater.
Speaking alongside writer-director Tom McCarthy and co-stars Abigail Breslin, Camille Cottin and Lilou Siauvaud during the film’s press conference, Damon reflected on what it was like to return to a packed cinema after a rough 18 months for the world.
“I was a little overwhelmed last night. I’m really glad we’re here this year. We’ll look back and remember launching the film out of Covid. To be in a room with 1,000 other people who are strangers but who are part of the same community because we love the same thing was such a great reminder of why we do this.”
In Stillwater, Damon plays an oil worker who travels from Oklahoma to France to help his estranged daughter, who is in prison for a murder she claims she didn’t commit.

Matt Damon is woefully miscast as a rash, violent loser in Tom McCarthy’s calamitous reworking of the notorious murder case
Tom McCarthy is the director who gave us the Oscar-winning Spotlight, an estimable film. But this is one to forget: a muddled, tonally misjudged, badly acted, uncertainly directed and frankly dubious drama, something that falls into the so-bad-it’s-bad bracket. It’s hamfistedly inspired by the Amanda Knox case, the young American woman who was acquitted having spent four years in an Italian prison after the murder in 2007 of her roommate in Perugia, the British exchange student Meredith Kercher. This film creates a fictional quasi-Knox figure and fatuously convicts this made-up character of a certain muddled wrongdoing that the real Amanda Knox may very well feel she should not be smeared with.
The action is moved to Marseille in France. Abigail Breslin plays Allison Baker, a young woman from Stillwater,...

Amanda Knox is speaking out after Rudy Guede, the man who was convicted of the 2007 killing of her study abroad roommate Meredith Kercher in Italy, was released from prison. In a blog post, which she also recorded as a bonus episode of her podcast Labyrinths, Knox stated that although the "evidence of Guede's guilt is overwhelming, as is the lack of evidence implicating any other suspect," he still has not "faced appropriate consequences" for his "horrific crime." She pointed out that Guede, who was convicted of sexual assault and conspiracy to commit murder, was sentenced to just 16 years in prison, and was granted day release after 10 years....

Amanda Knox will not be bullied by controversial media personality Piers Morgan. On Wednesday, Nov. 4, Amanda went on Twitter to make a joke about the still-undeclared Presidential race between current Commander-in-Chief President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden. With many on social media expressing fear and anxiety over the outcome, Amanda tweeted, "Whatever happens, the next four years can't be as bad as that four-year study abroad I did in Italy, right?" Amanda, an American and then college student, was wrongfully convicted of killing her British roommate Meredith Kercher in 2007 when the women were studying abroad in Perugia, Italy. She spent four years...

At a glance, everything is normal about Amanda Knox. The beloved pet cat, the coffee pics on Instagram, the bearded husband, the disappointment over Andrew Yang exiting the presidential race—all of it screams "young woman just doing her thing in Seattle!" A lot of what came before, of course, was as close to a nightmare as it gets, made all the worse because it was real life. Five years ago, Italy's highest court vacated once and for all Knox's conviction in the 2007 murder of British student Meredith Kercher, a crime that resulted in Knox spending four years in an Italian prison, insisting throughout that she was innocent. Now 32, Knox has worked on setting her own...

Amanda Knox is all about the Facts. Lady Gaga tweeted on Thursday, "Fame is prison." Knox, who famously spent four years in prison in Italy for the 2007 murder of her roommate before being acquitted, responded, "I hear you, but...prison is prison." Gaga, 33, has not responded. In 2007, Knox, now 32, and then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were found guilty of murdering her roommate, British student Meredith Kercher, during an alleged drunken sex assault. Kercher was found stabbed in their apartment n the Italian town of Perugia. Knox was sentenced to 26 years in prison. She served four years. Following an appeal, both she and Sollecito were found not guilty of...

While her wedding is not for another six months, Amanda Knox is already a Mrs. It was less than a year ago that the criminal justice activist, who was famously exonerated in the murder case of her roommate Meredith Kercher, announced her engagement to boyfriend Christopher Robinson following an elaborate science fiction-inspired proposal. While their wedding will take place in February 2020, it turns out they are already legally married. According to their marriage license application and certificate obtained by E! News, the pair applied for a marriage certificate in King County in Knox's native Washington shortly after the proposal on Nov. 21, 2018. According to their marriage certificate,...

Amanda Knox heads to Italy this weekend to “face her fears” where much of the population still think she’s guilty of murdering her roommate 12 years ago. Like Steve Bannon, Knox is another American export Italians can’t seem to keep out.
But the visit is a good time to remember how the online phenomenon of Amanda Knox was a portent of the Age of Trump, with its elevation and celebration of unreason, as the digital age linked and energized what most charitably could be called “suspicious minds.”

Amanda Knox is expanding her relationship with SundanceTV and Sundance Now, with her true crime podcast The Truth About True Crime with Amanda Knox, set to launch more episodes, parent AMC Networks announced Saturday at TCA.
The podcast launched last year to accompany true crime series Jonestown: Terror in the Jungle on SundanceTV.
Now Sundance TV and streaming service Sundance Now are preparing to roll out a new slate of true crime documentary series, and Knox’s podcast “will take a detailed look” at the crimes chronicled in the projects.
Knox, who is an executive producer on the podcast series with Christopher Robinson, says she’ll “bring nuance” to the stories told in the documentary series.
“After surviving my own true crime saga, I tend not to be a fan of the genre, because it so often veers into sensationalism at the expense of the human beings involved and the truth,...

Amanda Knox is on Instagram. There's nothing too exceptional about that, it's a pretty normal state of affairs. But the photographic evidence of Knox living a normal life is quietly remarkable when you remember that a decade ago she was in an Italian prison awaiting trial on murder charges. Overall she spent four years locked up, from being arrested in 2007, through being convicted of her roommate Meredith Kercher's murder in 2009 and until she was released on Oct. 3, 2011, her conviction overturned on appeal. The Seattle native was back in Washington by the following afternoon. She returned school and wrote a book about her experience, 2013's, Waiting to Be...

Amanda Knox has finally found her happily ever after. "It was just your average Sunday night, when suddenly..." she captioned the moment, which captured how Robinson popped the question by leading Amanda into their backyard and presenting her with a meteor and futuristic tablet titled "the Knox-Robinson Coalescence." Facebook Watch found the perfect person to host its new show about women who've been publicly shamed: Amanda Knox, the 30-year-old who was tried for the murder of her roommate and ultimately exonerated. In the six-part docuseries The Scarlet Letter Reports, which debuted on May 2, Amanda sits down with famous female pariahs, hoping to reveal the real people behind the "two-dimensional characters" propagated by the media and the public. It wasn't long ago that Amanda was presumed guilty… Until, of course, she was proven otherwise. At 20 years old, the Seattle native was arrested after the 2007 murder of British exchange student Meredith Kercher, with whom Amanda roomed as she studied abroad in Perugia, Italy. Amanda was nicknamed "Foxy Knoxy" in the press and thought to have killed Meredith in a sex game gone wrong. In 2011, however, she had her murder conviction overthrown. She and her ex-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, were then retried and again found guilty,...

"Foxy Knoxy" is still haunting Amanda Knox. More than a decade after the murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher, the 30-year-old Seattle native is still battling the public persona that was painted of her while on trial for the 2007 tragedy. Amid all the media coverage of Knox after Kercher's death and during the trial, she was painted as a young, sex-crazed American she-devil as outlets picked at her life in college before Italy, her social behavior while studying abroad, her relationship with her then-Italian boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, and the prosecution's theories on her motives and argued participation in the murder. After her childhood nickname "Foxy Knoxy" was...
