"But don't you think it's too dangerous?" Of course not! Netflix has revealed a teaser trailer for a new game show dark comedy series called The 8 Show, from filmmaker Korean filmmaker Han Jae-rim. This series plays like a mashup between The Platform and Squid Game - another clever metaphor for capitalism and how awful it really is. It's yet another game show for Netflix, but this is a fictional series based on web comics. "An irresistible but brutal show's curtain will be rising." Eight contestants in financial hardship take part in Money Game, a reality competition with 44.8 billion Korean won up for grabs. To win they must endure 100 days in an empty concrete building - and all purchases carry a 1000x markup, subtracted from the prize winning pot. The building is 8 stories tall and they earn money as time passes, but also must spend it to survive. Starring Ryu Jun-yeol,...

Right from his debut feature “Runaway” in 1995, Kim Sung-su has established two things vehemently: he can work with big stars and he can work on a big budget quite effectively. Starting with a then-young but nonetheless impressive Lee Byung-hun, he has since gone on to work with the likes of Lee Jung-jae, Jung Woo-sung, Hwang Jung-min and even Zhang Ziyi in a rare Korean production appearance. Since his last two works, he has also established that he is also adept at working with an ensemble cast, with both “The Flu” and the highly impressive “Asura: The City of Madness” having an extensive and impressive cast-list. Seven years since “Asura: The City of Madness”, Kim returns to the big screen and with a couple actors he has worked with for “12.12: The Day”, a political thriller based on recent Korean history.

What is a “makjang” K-drama? The TV series genre is best described as having exaggerated plots that “take things too far.” Fans will see dramatic characterizations, scandalous affairs, and intense murderous drama, often revolving around the filthy-rich elite who can get away with it all. Netflix’s revenge K-drama The Glory can be categorized as one, but there are plenty more to enjoy.

As described at the start of Jae-rim Han’s disaster film in the sky, everything is supposed to stop the moment a pilot initiates an Emergency Declaration. It alone lets everyone involved know that the plane is in real danger of crashing. Other aircraft are instantly diverted into circling patterns, the nearest runway is cleared for landing, and it becomes all-hands-on-deck to ensure the safety of passengers and crew. And the general populace condones those measures—they don’t know when they might be on the next flight in desperate need of a runaway. Since the protocol is mainly drawn for piloting issues, depleting fuel, or malfunctions that make time of the essence, however, things get much more complicated if the plane becomes a threat itself.

"Until further notice, you're not permitted to land anywhere." Well Go USA has debuted a new US trailer for a Korean action thriller set mostly on a plane titled Emergency Declaration, from Korean filmmaker Jae-rim Han. This actually premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival last year, playing in the Midnight section as one of their annual Korean action film offerings. An aircraft is forced to declare an "emergency" when a terrorist attack occurs mid-flight. Master actor Song Kang-ho stars as a detective investigating a threat, who discovers a terrorist has boarded a flight from Incheon Airport to Hawaii. Soon after departing, a man dies for mysterious reasons. A counterterroism task force is setup to try to find out how to land the airplane safely. The cast features Lee Byung-hun, Jeon Do-yeon, Kim Nam-gil, Yim Si-wan, Kim So-jin, and Park Hae-joon. I still haven't seen this yet, I'm glad it will be out to watch soon!

Korean cinema’s recent obsession with disaster movies continues and the latest to join the already released productions in the genre is probably the most high profile of them all. Despite his phobia of flying, Jae-hyuk decides to go to Hawaii for the sake of his daughter’s health. At the airport, he is distracted by a strange man who hangs around, speaking to them in a menacing way.

The actor, after years of excellent supporting roles, has consistently been impressing with hims choices and performances in projects with him as a leading role. However, one genre that he was yet to tackle was horror. That changes with debutant director Kim Tae-hyung’s film “The 8th Night”, which is coming soon to Netflix.

Stars: Philip Hersh, So-nee Jeon, Sun-kyun Lee, Young-yu Lee, Hae-Joon Park | Written and Directed by Jeong-beom Lee
Jo Pil-ho: The Dawning Rage, directed by Lee Jeong-beom, stars Lee Sun-kyun as the titular character. A washed-up double-crossing crooked detective who on his latest illegal exploit is uncovered in a larger underground criminal conspiracy scheme that splits his personal life and career in half.
Think a Korean spin on Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver meets Abel Ferrera’s Bad Lieutenant. The story itself, written by Lee Jeong-beom and Im Beom, isn’t all that dissimilar from your usual anti-hero detective thriller born out of conventional genre tropes and flood the South Korean market. However, Jo Pil-ho: The Dawning Rage offers a decent escapade for its audience, with a balance of tone that works perfectly in a less than the harsh approach to the material that could easily be overly muddled and dark.
