The Paul Schrader Renaissance began the moment “First Reformed” debuted to the director’s best reviews in at least 15 years, back in 2017. The spiritual trilogy formed around it — “The Card Counter” and “Master Gardener” — have fostered in a new generation’s mind this frankly narrow vision of what constitutes a Paul Schrader movie: men in rooms, pens across diaries, peculiar revenge plots.
It’s likely that audiences anticipating another drama in which a man’s profession comes dressed as the sick soul of America will be baffled by “Oh, Canada,” his newest feature now in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. It’s based on Russell Banks’ 2021 novel “Foregone.” Those well-acquainted with Schrader’s half-century of cinema may find themselves on the edge of bafflement with this film, which uses the last will and testament of documentary filmmaker Leonard Fife (Richard Gere) as a trickle-down device for 55 years of guilt,...

Much like many series that made the transition from 2D to 3D open worlds, Konami’s two Castlevania forays on the Nintendo 64 weren’t exactly the best. Still, Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness is considered the better title when compared to Castlevania 64, and now thanks to one fan’s discovery, it’s been made that much better.
Courtesy of IGN, YouTuber JupiterClimb recently posted a new video revealing that he has discovered the famous Konami Code in the 1999 action-platformer. Inputting the code unlocks all four characters from the very start, their alternate costumes, and the game’s Hard Mode difficulty. Meaning, you won’t have to unlock each character and their alternate costumes by rescuing the children found throughout the game. This also remedies the complaint that Reinhardt and Carrie weren’t available from the beginning of the game, as they were in Castlevania 64.

Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready has revealed he is drawing on his experiences in the Seattle grunge scene for a new rock opera. In an interview with Guitar World, the musician said the project is inspired by and honors the late Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell, who was also McCready’s bandmate in the supergroup Temple of the Dog.
“I look at him as one of the greatest singers and songwriters of all time, aside from being a friend,” McCready said about Cornell. “I love Chris and I’m working on a little project about the Seattle scene and a musical kind of rock opera thing. It’s just from my experience in the Seattle music scene, and he’s part of it.”
Last month, McCready shared the first preview of the rock opera when he posted a live performance of a Cornell tribute called “Crying Moon” on Instagram. He told...

60 years ago, Doctor Who was created with a strong educational element, mixing science and history facts with adventure. Initially some stories featured no science-fiction elements outside of the Tardis and its crew. This story format petered out by the fourth season, and ′The Highlanders′ was the last example until ′Black Orchid′ in 1982.
The final story of the second season created the ′Pseudo-historical′ format – a story set in Earth′s history but with an additional science-fiction element to the Tardis crew. This format persists to the present day. By ′Best Historical Episodes′ here, we don’t mean the dozen or so purely historical stories, but are including pseudo-historical stories too.
Some of these stories have a historical setting based around a historical celebrity. Others are more intertwined with historical events and use that setting as a springboard for their stories, but they all represent the best the show has delivered so far.

Oscar-winner Jamie Lee Curtis has a new project on the horizon but it will be a few more sleeps until it arrives.
Curtis has teamed once again with illustrator Laura Cornell for a new children’s picture book titled Just One More Sleep: All Good Things Come to Those Who Wait…and Wait…and Wait. Curtis, a New York Times bestselling author, has previously authored such children’s offerings as Tell Me Again About the Night I Was Born, Today I Feel Silly and I’m Gonna Like Me.
Just One More Sleep will be published in January from Philomel Books, an imprint of Penguin Young Readers. Per the publisher’s description, the book “celebrates the benefits of delayed gratification and explains why waiting can be wonderful. Waiting is not easy — especially for children, and they often measure the concept of time into how many more sleeps until the special day they are awaiting.

Ed Helms is a true comedy master and a multitalented star. He’s most known for his roles as spoiled but hilarious Cornell grad, Andy Bernard, in NBC’s sitcom The Office. Disturbed vocalist David Draiman is feeling thankful. In a new social media post, he expressed gratitude for the “outpouring of support” he has received after courageously revealing at a concert in Milwaukee that he recently almost lost his own life to mental health struggles.
As previously reported, while speaking about the song “A Reason to Fight,” the singer told the crowd, “I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of losing everybody I love to depression and addiction. Every single band member on this stage has dealt with those feelings, with those demons. And I miss the friends that we’ve lost. I miss Chester [Bennington], I miss Scott [Weiland], I miss Chris [Cornell].”
He added, “And if I can be completely honest with you, a couple months ago, I almost joined them. Addiction and depression can happen to anyone ladies and gentlemen.”

There’s a rich, storied history of independent bookstores in Southern California, from Pasadena’s Vroman’s to Chevalier’s Books in Larchmont Village (which has welcomed everyone from Howard Hughes to Aldous Huxley and Nat King Cole through its doors, which first opened in 1940).
Now, as some consumers tire of buying books online from faceless corporations, a new generation of community-focused shops is sprouting up throughout Los Angeles – giving life to writers and readers across different neighborhoods.
In Pasadena, there’s Octavia’s Bookshelf; in Highland Park, North Figueroa Bookshop; in Mid-City, Palm Grove Social; in Santa Monica, Zibby’s Bookshop. All serving vastly different audiences with unique and carefully curated stock, LA’s indie bookstore movement is a reminder that print isn’t quite dead.

After lead singer Chris Cornell‘s death in 2017, his former band Soundgarden planned to release their final recordings with the late singer but were halted by Cornell’s widow, Vicky Cornell.
In 2019, Vicky sued Soundgarden in federal court over royalties regarding the last recordings her husband had made which she claimed were an independent project whereas the band claimed were part of the group effort.

The widow of singer Chris Cornell and his former bandmates in Soundgarden said Monday that they have resolved her lawsuit against them, clearing the way for the release of the band’s final recordings more than five years after his death.
Vicky Cornell sued Soundgarden in federal court in 2019 over royalties from recordings her husband had made that she said were intended to be a solo project but the band contended were part of their partnership with him.

Anne Heche, Tom Sizemore, Paul Sorvino and more were not included in ‘In Memoriam’ segment at Oscars
Amid the happiness for favorites like Brendan Fraser and Everything Everywhere All at Once getting their big wins at last night’s Academy Awards, one of the more somber moments, as always, came during the “In Memoriam” segment. As the segment started, John Travolta would tearfully pay tribute to his Grease co-star Olivia Newton-John with Lenny Kravitz playing Calling All Angels. With every year’s telecast, audiences would often react not only to the tributes but also to the notable absences of certain figures in film.
The Hollywood Reporter has the reactions to some of the bewildering snubs in this year’s segment. Social media platforms lit up with people noticing the absence of actress Charlbi Dean of the Oscar-nominated Triangle of Sadness, Tom Sizemore, Paul Sorvino, Leslie Jordan, and Anne Heche, despite the unfortunate details surrounding her death. Curiously, although those individuals were omitted from the television broadcast, but...

From tragic deaths (Cobain, Cornell, Lanegan) to careers and bands that have wound down or evaporated, the landscape of alt-rock heroes is fairly bleak these days—which makes it all the more ironic that one of the last men standing is the Afghan Whigs’ Greg Dulli. As the reigning cad of the Nineties alternative gold rush, Dulli was one of the genre’s most polarizing figures, the dude you loved to hate or hated to love. (Remember the Fat Greg Dulli fanzine?) Scandinavian countries are statistically some of the safest places to live in the world, but their TV shows say the opposite. This European subregion’s penchant for dark and dreary crime stories first began in books before moving off the page, and since then, television has become the biggest source of what’s now referred to as “Scandi noir.” While these kinds of chilly thrillers caught on after the turn of the century, they appeared as early as the 1980s. One seminal example is Månguden (The Moon God), an ’88 TV-movie inspired by the real-life ‘84 “tent killings” at Lake Appojaure. Because the Swedes were so affected by this “ripped from the headlines” program, it aired only a few times before being indefinitely locked away for two decades.
