Jordan Peele is gearing up to share a new anthology celebrating Black horror. Entitled Out There Screaming: An Anthology of New Black Horror, the collection is due out on October 3rd via Random House.
Peele — who has earned quite a bit of acclaim in recent years for creating top-notch psychological horror films, like Get Out, Us, and Nope — curated Out There Screaming, handpicking all-new short horror stories by 19 Black authors. He also wrote the foreword for the 400-page collection. Pre-orders are ongoing.
Promising stories that “prey on everything we think we know about our world… and redefine what it means to be afraid,” Out There Screaming is poised to be an inventive entry in the canon of horror fiction. If the sample excerpt — a snippet of N. K. Jemisin’s “Reckless Eyeballing,” currently available to read on the book’s Amazon page — is any indication, fans can expect to dive...

Following the successful run of his Comedy Central series “Key & Peele,” Jordan Peele made a well-received pivot to the psychological horror genre, starting with his 2017 feature “Get Out” starring Daniel Kaluuya followed by 2019’s “Us” with and 2022’s “Nope.” His current catalog of thrillers center on themes of Blackness in America, pitting the sometimes horrifying reality of these experiences against the classic supernatural tropes of scary movies.
Now, the actor, writer and director is releasing a new book, “Out There Screaming: An Anthology of New Black Horror,” a hard-cover curation of some of the best horror stories from 19 Black writers. Peele edited the anthology and wrote the foreword for the book, which is already a No. 1 new-release on Amazon.

I’m a Virgo is a triumph of imagination and ideology.
A boomerang throwback to Amazon’s early streaming years when poignant oddballs like Transparent and Patriot dominated Jeff Bezos’ slate, the Boots Riley-created series that launches Friday on Prime Video is a revitalizing return to originality both for the platform and the franchise-heavy small screen itself.
Watch it, with both eyes open.
With dead-end basketball and branding deals, societal toxicity, fast food and a faster-moving love interest played in breakout fashion by Olivia Washington, the heart of the poetic show is 13-foot-tall Cootie, portrayed in towering fashion by Jharrel Jerome. Leading the 19-year-old Oakland native’s unsure steps to the outside world after years of being hidden, the When They See Us Emmy winner ups his already considerable game to unfurl a naturalism that grounds the magical realism all around him.

Walden Media has preemptively acquired N.K. Jemisin’s bestselling “The Great Cities” duology, “The City We Became” and “The World We Make,” with the intention to develop both books into an ongoing series.
“The City We Became” is set in an alternate version of the world, where major cities like New York City become sentient through human avatars. After the avatar of New York falls into a supernatural coma and vanishes, a group of five new avatars representing New York’s boroughs come together to fight their common enemy and save New York — and, potentially, the world.
The collection marks Jemisin’s first books after her “Broken Earth” Trilogy, which comprised 2015’s “The Fifth Season,” 2016’s “The Obelisk Gate” and 2017’s “The Stone Sky.”

N.K Jemisin knows how to build a new world. An award-winning fiction writer, Jemisin has made a name for herself for her world-building prowess in fantasy lands. Her Broken Earth trilogy, a science fantasy series surrounding an otherworldly apocalyptic event, became the first set of novels to be awarded three consecutive Hugo Awards, the premier award in science fiction writing. But the books (and Jemisin) also received critical acclaim for the skillful way they weave real-world problems into the lore of the book—something Jemisin tells Rolling Stone is a hallmark of her work.

Exclusive: In Sony Pictures Entertainment’s second seven-figure deal this week for a multi-book series, TriStar Pictures emerged from a bidding battle to win The Broken Earth sci-fi trilogy by N.K. Jemisin. The author will adapt the books herself. Sony, in partnership with Elizabeth Gabler’s 3000 Pictures, earlier this week acquired the Don Winslow City on Fire trilogy for mid-seven figures.
Each book in Jemisin’s series — The Fifth Season, The Obelisk Gate and The Stone Sky — won the Hugo Award for Best Novel, making Jemisin the first person to win the award three years in a row and the first person to win for all three books in a trilogy.
The Fifth Season establishes the setting, a harsh futuristic Earth and a continent called the Stillness, which endures seasonal apocalyptic events that shake the world and its inhabitants during these “seasons.” They hole up in communities and then rebuild.

Writing compelling characters can be one of the most difficult parts of the craft, especially when it comes to ensemble stories, which focus on groups of characters and their relationships with one another. In an ensemble story, each character needs their own desires and roots, their own challenges and voice. At their best, reading a good ensemble story can feel like hanging out with a clever, loving, bickering group of friends. It’s one of the reasons we love The Lord of the Rings or Six of Crows or The Expanse. It’s also one of the reasons why fantasy author Victoria Aveyard wanted to write her new book, Realm Breaker. Inspired by her childhood love for The Lord of the Rings, Aveyard wanted to write a proper high fantasy adventure that had a place for her in the ensemble.

As author and scholar Ytasha L. Womack explains, Afrofuturism is an artistic genre that blends imagination, technology, Black cultures, liberation, and mysticism. It is a "way of looking at the future and alternate realities through a Black cultural lens," including those from Africa and the African diaspora. Typically seen through an artistic aesthetic of music, visual art, dance, film, or literature, Womack also explains that the genre can be a method of self-liberation and healing by using imagination to transcend circumstances and creating agency.
Currently, Marvel's Black Panther film is the most popular example of Afrofuturism. In literature, authors from Womack to Octavia E. Butler to N.K. Jemisin and so many more are acclaimed for their work in the space.
Whether you are looking for an imaginative and liberating read or are looking for a suggestion for the 2021 Popsugar Reading Challenge's Afrofuturism prompt, pick up one of these Afrofuturist favorites.

Family movie nights are making a comeback in the pandemic quarantine.
“Every night, for the last 25 nights, my family and I have watched a movie together. When quarantine hit, we, like many, designed a color-coded schedule outlining when we would work, read, eat lunch, take a walk. By week four, most of it has fallen by the wayside, but one thing remains constant: our nightly movie.”

Hugo Award-winning novelist N.K. Jemisin goes off on Twitter about some fanfiction etiquettes that newer generations seem to have forgotten.
“No, the first rule of fanfiction is not ‘we don’t talk about fanfiction.’ Many writers happily discuss reading and writing fic—as evidenced by N.K. Jemisin, the three-time Hugo Award-winning novelist, describing how she still writes and reads it herself. The first rule of fanfiction is ‘you do not try and get the original creator to read your fanfiction.

The world may be upside down, but the Hugo Awards are forever! The Hugos are the longest-running fan-voted awards in the genres of science fiction and fantasy, first bring presented in 1953. The awards are generally given out during the World Science Fiction Convention, which is in a different host city every year. Sadly, the 78th Worldcon, aka CoNZealand, set to take place in (you guessed it) New Zealand, will have to be virtual this year. The Hugo ceremony will therefore also take place online.
Today, CoNZealand announced the finalists for this year’s Hugos, voted on by 1,584 people, who submitted 27,033 nominations. Those who were members of last year’s Worldcon, An Irish Worldcon, and members of this year’s Worldcon, CoNZealand, were eligible to vote, however, only CoNZealand members will be able to vote on the final ballot and choose the winners. You can still purchase a Supporting Membership on...

Far Sector puts a new Green Lantern on a new beat and it's one of the most exciting things DC has done in ages.
It's awe inspiring to me that I can know from the moment a comic is announced that it is extremely For Me, and yet still be surprised at how good every issue is. It's even more impressive that I'm getting it from two creators who are relatively new to the medium. But that's the beauty of Far Sector: even when it's been great, it gets better.
I think my first exposure to N.K. Jemisin's writing was prose work. I'm not usually a short story guy, but hers in A People's Future of the United States was so good that I grabbed The Stone Sky right after, and the only reason I didn't tear through that series beginning to end in a week...

DC Comics' "Far Sector" #1, in support of the upcoming live-action "Green Lantern" TV series is written by N.K. Jemisin and illustrated by Jamal Campbell, with covers by Campbell, Shawn Martinbrough and Jamie McKelvie:
"...for the past six months, newly chosen 'Green Lantern Sojourner' 'Jo Mullein' has been protecting the 'City Enduring', a massive metropolis of 20 billion people.
"The city has maintained peace for over 500 years by stripping its citizens of their ability 'to feel'. As a result, violent crime is virtually unheard of, and murder is nonexistent. But that's all about to change..."

Legendary adult-oriented DC imprint, Vertigo Comics, will close down by January 2020.
The iconic comics imprint that brought readers The Sandman, Preacher, Hellblazer, Fables, Y: The Last Man, and others will close its doors in 2020. According to THR, DC Comics plans to shutter Vertigo Comics, as well as young adult imprints DC Zoom and DC Ink, starting in January.
Replacing them will be three, age-specific imprints: DC Kids for ages 8-12, DC for 13 and up, and the adult-oriented DC Black Label for readers 17 and older. Series currently running under DC Zoom, Ink, and Vertigo will be integrated into these new imprints. This means that series like Sandman Universe, which expands the world of the Vertigo's most famous character, may live on under Black Label. Additionally, projects previously announced for Black Label before the restructure will still be published by the imprint.

A handful of living science fiction writers have attained godlike status—N.K. Jemisin, Cixin Liu, and Ann Leckie, to name a few. But Ted Chiang is the only one who’s done it without writing a novel. In fact, he’s published far less than his neighbors on the genre’s current Mount Rushmore, usually just one short story…...

If you've never read Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower or Parable of the Talents, they are as unsettlingly relevant as ever.
Octavia Butler is one of the greatest science fiction authors of all time, and her work is continually being discovered by readers of all ages and literary interests. This will no doubt become a bit easier with the upcoming release of one of Butler's most-celebrated works: the Parable series.
According to EW, Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents will both be reissued by Grand Central Publishing this year. The new edition of Parable of the Sower, which will include an introduction by Broken Earth trilogy author N.K.
