The sci-fi thriller Companion is coming our way from writer/director Drew Hancock and the team behind the 2022 horror hit Barbarian… but even though nearly a year has passed since the project assembled its cast and went into production, we still know very little about it. It has managed to stay shrouded in secrecy all this time. Which is a good thing, since its release date is still several months away. Deadline broke the news that Companion won’t be reaching theatres (including IMAX screens) until January 10, 2025.
That release date gives Companion a one week head-start on Blumhouse Productions and director Leigh Whannell’s reboot of the classic Universal Monsters property Wolf Man.
New Line Cinema went all-in on a partnership with Barbarian (watch it Here) writer/director Zach Cregger and the film’s producers at BoulderLight Pictures. New Line came out the winner in a bidding war over Cregger’s next film,...

The Toronto International Film Festival is off and running. Netflix has just made its first major purchase of a feature film at the film event. The streaming giant has chosen its contestant with a new thriller starring Anna Kendrick called Woman of the Hour. Not only does the film star Kendrick, but the movie is also the Pitch Perfect star’s directorial debut. Deadline is reporting that Netflix has initiated the film festival acquisitions with this title at an estimated $11 million.
According to Deadline, the plot of Woman of the Hour “tells the stranger-than-fiction story of a young woman who actually won a date on The Dating Game with a man who turned out to be a notorious serial killer. Rodney Alcala was convicted or murdering at least eight women, but investigators believe the number could be as high as 130. The handsome and charming Alcala lured women by posing as a photographer looking for models.

Exclusive: In the first major acquisition deal on the ground here at the Toronto Film Festlval, Netflix is closing on Woman of the Hour, the fact-based thriller that marks the directing debut of Anna Kendrick. We’re hearing the deal is for around $11 million.
While some festival-bound pictures signed SAG-AFTRA Interim Agreements so cast members could make the trip, many didn’t. That’s because signatories especially streamers would not make quick deals on films when they are battling both WGA and SAG-AFTRA on a new deal. Woman of the Hour did not sign the Ia, which is why this deal happened in the first weekend of the festival.

Sophie Thatcher, one of the breakouts from Showtime sensation Yellowjackets, has nabbed the titular role in Companion, the sci-fi thriller from the team behind last year’s horror hit Barbarian.
The project has been casting up ahead of a hoped-for summer start of production and has Jack Quaid, Lukas Gage, Megan Suri and Harvey Guillén on the call sheet.
Drew Hancock wrote the original script and is making his directorial debut with the feature, the many plot points of which are being kept hush-hush. It is, however, being described as self-contained, and Thatcher is set to play a character who is more than meets the eye.
The feature is being produced by Zach Cregger, the filmmaker who made the twist-filled, pulse-rushing Barbarian, and his Barbarian companions Raphael Margules and J.D. Lifshitz of BoulderLight Pictures and Roy Lee of Vertigo.
BoulderLight’s Tracy Rosenblum and Vertigo’s Andrew Childs will executive produce.
