"Ted Lasso" is many things: a show about mental health, community and self-improvement, a comedy about culture shock, and a thrilling sports drama about the joys and heartbreaks of association football. When it comes to this last part, the Apple TV+ series is in kind of a weird place. You see, AFC Richmond is a fictional team, but it competes against real teams. For the most part, "Ted Lasso" stays in its own little bubble, in part because the show has its own analogs to real-life players — like Dani Rojas being heavily inspired by Javier "Chicharito" Hernández, or Jamie Tartt serving as a sort of Ronaldo stand-in, or Zlatan being a clear inspiration for Zava.
This isn't to say "Ted Lasso" is entirely disconnected from the real world. The show has plenty of references to real athletes, and there have been some stellar cameos from actual football players and pundits,...

Films and television shows based on comic books are ubiquitous nowadays. In the 1970s, however, superhero fare wasn't exactly the drama mine it is now. We had the light and entertaining "Wonder Woman" TV series with Lynda Carter, and the campy and comedic "Batman" series with Adam West was in the rearview mirror. Comics were still mostly for kids, and we were years away from seeing Michael Keaton dramatically don the Batsuit. The genre wasn't taken particularly seriously.
In the mid-1970s, Universal got the rights to some of Stan Lee's Marvel comic book characters, including the Hulk. Though the resulting TV series "The Incredible Hulk" produced a two-hour pilot and had five subsequent seasons, not everyone was on board with the idea of a show about a man who gets mad and turns into a hulking green dude. Series writer, producer, and creator Kenneth Johnson wasn't interested at all at first,...

Les Misérables is a beautifully resounding musical that has seen multiple revivals and revisions, the latest of those being the 2012 movie. In the musical, the main character, Jean Valjean, was imprisoned for 19 years after stealing bread and making multiple jailbreak attempts. After being on parole, he was met by the bishop of Digne and was sheltered for a night. He stole the bishop’s silverware, but when the authorities brought the captured Valjean back to the bishop, the latter pardoned him, changing his heart to lead a better life. Being a musical, the work was tattered with a lot

Celebrities are well-known and loved for their roles. For example, whether you see a celebrity’s face, you would often associate them with a role that you’ve known them for. Take, for instance, if you met Rowan Atkinson on the sidewalk, you would immediately think of him as Mr. Bean. Meanwhile, if I meet our celebrity for today, Hugh Jackman, I would almost always immediately think that I’ve just walked across Jean Valjean (because Les Misérables was the first film featuring Jackman that I watched). Being known and loved for their acting roles, they are also notorious for dropping hints, statements,

“It’s a massive transformation,” explains “Funny Girl” star Ramin Karimloo of his character journey as Nicky Arnstein. The Broadway musical theatre veteran lends his signature vocal pyrotechnics to the role in this first-ever Broadway revival of the Jule Styne and Bob Merrill musical, but it’s the dramatic places he charts as an actor which make his version of Arnstein thrilling to witness. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
When theater lovers get excited about “Funny Girl” it’s probably because of the gripping story and legendary songs for its central character Fanny Brice (played by Beanie Feldstein in this revival). But Karimloo is relishing the fact that he gets to put “more meat on the bones” of Nicky Arnstein’s story thanks to some smart revisions of the book, courtesy of Harvey Fierstein. “You always want to play the transition,” states the actor, “results are boring.” The performer...

The French leader was so appalled by Les Misérables, a film about a riot in a tough banlieue, that he launched an investigation. The director of ‘the new La Haine’ talks about the country’s angry underclass
When Ladj Ly was a teenager, his mate stole a lion cub from the circus. The pair kept it in an apartment, but it cried for its mother, upset the neighbours – and the people who ran the circus demanded it be returned.
Fast forward two decades and Ly uses that real-life catnapping as narrative spur for his award-winning debut film Les Misérables. The setting is Montfermeil, a tough banlieue north-east of Paris where he was born and raised. Montfermeil is also the location of the Thénardiers’ inn in Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel Les Misérables, the place where former convict Jean Valjean meets the orphan Cosette.

Forget hitting a high C note. Following The Voice’s Road to Live Shows special Monday evening, the NBC sing-off instead went for the high… larious by posting to YouTube Season 18’s outtakes (so far!).
Though, in the clip, Kelly Clarkson is quick to call herself the “grandpa who says inappropriate things when they do bloopers at the end” of a movie, the silly standout, as you’d rather expect, isn’t her, John Legend or new coach on the block Nick Jonas; it’s Blake Shelton. “Behind the scenes,” he deadpans, “we’re even stupider than we are on camera.

Yesterday marked the third anniversary of Logan’s cinematic release. The film, which saw Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart reprise their iconic X-Men roles for the final time, was a major critical and commercial success. Taking its cues from classic westerns and character dramas, as opposed to the bland CGI-corporatism typical of the superhero genre, Logan stood out from the crowd. How then to pay tribute to this worthy highlight of modern filmmaking? Well, the Merc with a Mouth has the answer.
One of the more unexpected legacies Logan left has been the ongoing (and highly entertaining) feud between Jackman and his X-Men universe co-star Ryan Reynolds. You can trace the root of it to Deadpool 2, which gleefully ripped Jean Valjean’s emotional farewell from the franchise. Naturally, Reynolds has posted one of those Deadpool 2 jokes to his Instagram page as a mark of respect for this year’s anniversary,...

This was an “opportunity to bring real context to Javert,” reveals David Oyelowo about his role on “Les Miserables.” “For me, a character like Javert, who in the musical you could argue can come off as one dimensional and very easily dismissible as the villain of the piece, I just found in reading Victor Hugo’s book and Andrew Davies’ scripts that there’s so much more going on.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Oyelowo above.

There’s a new “Les Misérables” at Cannes, but worry not: Russell Crowe doesn’t sing in this one. Amazon Studios has acquired writer-director Ladj Ly’s debut feature film following its world premiere at Cannes. Variety first reported the news, including the detail that “Netflix was also believed to be pursuing the film, with insiders pegging the final price for the film at $1.5 million.”
Based not on Victor Hugo’s timeless novel but rather the riots that erupted in Ly’s neighborhood in Paris in 2005 — the same neighborhood, in fact, where part of said novel takes place — “Les Misérables” was co-written by Giordano Gederlini and Alexis Manenti; Toufik Ayadi and Christophe Barral of Srab Films produced it.

Pointedly repurposing the title of Victor Hugo’s classic novel about the laws of nature and grace, Ladj Ly’s “Les Misérables” bears little outward resemblance to the epic story of Jean Valjean and his stolen loaf of bread. But Ly’s first narrative feature — a gripping and grounded procedural that probes the tensions between Paris’ anti-crime police and the poor Muslim population they torment and suppress — revisits the French suburb of Montfermeil in the present day, and finds that little has changed in the 150 years since Hugo first characterized the strife he saw through his bedroom window.
Extended from Ly’s short of the same name, and inspired by the riots that erupted at the foot of the filmmaker’s building in 2005, “Les Misérables” vibrates with the kind of unshakeable verisimilitude that can only be earned through first-hand experience. At the same time, it’s not like the movie...

John Murphy composed the score for the new adaptation of “Les Miserables,” but competing with the iconic music from the Broadway version wasn’t an issue for him because, perhaps surprisingly, he’s “never actually seen the musical.” He did read Victor Hugo‘s original novel while he was on a concert tour through Europe in his early 20s, and then again a decade later. “Maybe that’s why I never went to see the musical,” he says, “because I didn’t want to be disappointed.” So when he was enlisted to work on this six-part PBS retelling of the novel, he jumped at the chance because it was so “personal” for him. Playing a character driven by obsession is not an easy task. When that role is driven by an all-consuming, dogged pursuit of another person, it can make for a tricky relationship on set.
In the case of the recent TV adaptation of “Les Misérables,” Jean Valjean actor Dominic West was a little confused by David Oyelowo’s standoffishness in the role of Javert. In a Masterpiece interview, West talked about some of their initial reactions during production.
“At first, I thought David was rather unfriendly, but I didn’t realize he was being in character!” West said. “He’s an amazing actor, but he’s an amazing human being, in terms of his discipline. I’m a big admirer.”

David Oyelowo says his new take on “Les Miserables” for PBS’ “Masterpiece,” based on Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel, didn’t need to struggle for relevancy.
Oyelowo plays the relentless Inspector Javert, who refuses to believe that former convict Jean Valjean (Dominic West) can abandon his old ways. The two actors are also among the executive producers of the six-part series adapted by Andrew Davies.
“In the west, particularly, we are seeing the haves and the have-nots,” Oyelowo told TheWrap in an interview, which you can watch above. “There is a huge gap between both, an increasing gap between both.”

“Les Misérables” has major stones to debut on the same day and in the same timeslot as the hotly anticipated return of “Game of Thrones,” and that confidence isn’t necessarily foolish or unfounded. With its share of backstabbing, suffering, starry-eyed love, and insurrection, the Victor Hugo novel was delivering large-scale drama long before Jon Snow was even a glint in George R.R. Martin’s eye. PBS’ moving and stunning adaptation of “Les Misérables” is an engrossing treat, featuring a vibrant cast and taking its time to unspool the melodrama and offer loving looks at 19th century France.

When Victor Hugo wrote the 1900-page tome “Les Misérables” in 1862, he gave the world a transcending and sweeping tale that dissected the division of class while breathing life into complex characters spanning decades. Unfortunately, no matter what your stance on musical theater, much of that tome has since been lost in Broadway and big screen iterations.
Given that the book is one of the longest ever written, that comes as no surprise.
Enter the incoming six-part PBS Masterpiece limited series “Les Misérables,” a music-free offering aiming to introduce the novel’s intricate themes and plots to new and older audiences alike in a more intimate setting. Dominic West, David Oyelowo and Lily Collins star in the ambitious Belgium-shot production, which already aired across the pond on the BBC.

Some years ago I helped architect a film deal for a Woody Allen movie (Play It Again Sam) and Woody resented that he was not specified as director. A week later, when I encountered him, he looked right through me, even though we knew each other. “In Woody’s world, when you lose favor you are instantly extinguished,” one member of his inner circle explained to me.
I thought of that comment this week as I learned that Woody himself might be “extinguished” — or at least his prolific filmmaking career. As far as Andrew Davies is concerned, adapting Victor Hugo’s “Les Misérables” to the screen independent of Alain Boubil, Jean-Marc Natel, and Herbert Kretzmer’s juggernaut musical was nothing short of an overdue necessity. “I hated the musical,” the writer stated outright at the Television Critics Assn.’s winter press tour in February. “I just wanted to rescue this great book from [that] pathetic virago.”
Suffice it to say, his PBS Masterpiece version of “Les Misérables” does not wear its heart on its sleeve nearly as much as the musical’s bombastic numbers do. But Davies — whose considerable résumé includes adaptations of “Pride and Prejudice,” “Vanity Fair,” and “War and Peace” — nonetheless knows how to mine timeless emotion from tomes that many might dismiss as incurably dry.

This month, it’s all about the TV power couples: FX unveils their next big prestige project, i.e. a bruising Broadway-duo relationship drama with a liberal doze of jazz hands; AMC and BBC America combine forces to give folks a match-up between a witch and a vampire, as well as bringing back a critically adored cat-and-mouse game for a bloody Round Two; and no less than Javert and Valjean will obsessively pursue one another yet again in a new rendering of Les Misérables. That still leaves your standard morally-deficient-blind-girl comedy,...

John Owen-Jones is best known for two distinctive roles - Jean Valjean in Les Miserables and The Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera. He had played Jean Valjean on the West End, Broadway, and in the 25th Anniversary International Tour productions of Les Mis, becoming the youngest actor to play the role when he first took it on at age 26. Owen-Jones was also at one the time the longest running Phantom in the London production of the show, but his record has since been passed. Despite having playing these two definitive roles, John Owen-Jones has an incredible range as an actor and a singer, something that he showcases on his new album, Spotlight.

“I absolutely hated the musical!” said Andrew Davies, who wrote the screenplay for PBS/BBC’s six-part adaptation of Victor Hugo’s classic novel Les Miserables, premiering on Masterpiece on April 14.
“I just wanted to rescue this great book,” Davis proclaimed, adding, “I’m sorry, I’d like to be more frank,” when TV critics attending TCA seemed stunned by his non-love of the musical.
The book, which Masterpiece Ep Rebecca Eaton described as a “doorstop,” is not the kind of book Davies is typically engaged with, he said, describing it as possessing “not many subtleties” and filled with “extremes – like an extra book of the Bible that we haven’t dealt with before.”
“It’s all about stuff like redemption,” he said. “I started off my life being brought up in a very religious way, which I don’t have any more, but I do that a kidn of...

Academy Award-winning actor Russell Crowe has returned to the nation’s movie screens in Joel Edgerton‘s latest acclaimed film, “Boy Erased,” in which he plays a small-town Baptist minister, who, upon learning that his son is gay, orders him to undergo conversion therapy. After seeming to be starring in every other film in the early 2000s, Crowe has become more selective in recent years, so that when he does appear onscreen in a film, it feels like more of an event.
Crowe is one of only a handful of actors to have been Oscar-nominated for a leading role in three consecutive years — 1999’s “The Insider,” 2000’s “Gladiator” (win) and 2001’s “A Beautiful Mind,” all of which were also nominated for Best Picture (with “Gladiator” and “A Beautiful Mind” winning). He has also been nominated for five Golden Globe Awards and 10 Screen Actors Guild Awards (winning in both cases for...

Deadpool 2 is finally here and, as you might expect, it’s bulging with easter eggs. Of course, most superhero movies feature a whole lot of easter eggs and references to the comic books they’re based on and maybe other films in the same franchise, so this might not sound like anything too surprising. Deadpool 2, however, is on a completely different level.
Due to its fourth wall breaking nature and the quip-happy tendencies of its titular character, the pic takes aim at every major superhero franchise there is, makes fun of various other famous movies along the way and, of course, also drops in a lot of jokes that will make comic book readers laugh out loud but possibly sail over the heads of general audiences.
Obviously, there are a whole handful of easter eggs related to Hugh Jackman and in particular, Wolverine, which was to be expected.
