Showtime has been home to some flashy scripted programming over the last handful of years, with the breakout hit "Yellowjackets" right at the top of the list, not to mention the upcoming series adaptation of "Let the Right One In." This year saw the release of the ambitious "The Man Who Fell to Earth" on the premium cable channel/streaming service, serving as a sequel to the original 1976 movie that starred the late David Bowie.
For those who have been wondering whether or not we are going to get a second season of the sci-fi series, Showtime has finally handed down a verdict on that front. To get to the point, this is confirmed to be a one-and-done, though that may be for the best.

The Man Who Fell to Earth will not be back on Showtime for a second season, it has been announced.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series was initially conceived as a limited series, but that changed about halfway through production.
However, Showtime feels like the story came to a natural conclusion with its first season finale that aired earlier this year.
“Our thanks to the extraordinary Alex Kurtzman, Jenny Lumet, John Hlavin and Sarah Timberman who did a great job of turning the David Bowie film into such a resonant tale for our times,” a Showtime spokesperson said in a statement to THR.
“And kudos to a wondrous cast led by Chiwetel Ejiofor, Naomie Harris and Bill Nighy for bringing it to life."

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you haven’t watched the ninth episode of “The Man Who Fell to Earth” on Showtime.
When production designer James Merifield first signed on to Showtime’s “The Man Who Fell to Earth,” he thought he might be traveling to Cambodia or some exotic jungle to build a key set on location. But then the pandemic happened, and he ended up building the key set for the season finale in the U.K., at Black Park in Slough.
The series, a continuation of the novel written by Walter Tevis and the legendary film starring David Bowie released in 1976, stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as the alien humanoid Faraday who crashes his spacecraft deep in New Mexico. Justin Falls, played by Naomie Harris, is the only person on earth who can assist in the survival of his species.

One of the defining aspects of Alex Kurtzman’s career thus far is his close association with the “Star Trek” universe. As a writer and producer for the franchise, he has contributed to two feature films and four live action TV series, one of which – “Star Trek: Short Treks” – brought him his first Primetime Emmy nomination. This year, he has applied his sci-fi experience to his and Jenny Lumet’s creation of the popular Showtime drama series “The Man Who Fell to Earth,” on which he also serves as director, writer and producer. Watch Kurtzman describe the work that went into executing a scene from the inaugural episode in the exclusive 2022 Emmys FYC video feature above.

“The truth is that that story is timeless. You don’t want it to be timeless, but it is,” declares co-creator Alex Kurtzman about why it seemed like the right time to revisit this story on Showtime’s limited series “The Man Who Fell to Earth.”
“It felt like a particularly necessary time to tell the story,” he says, adding for our recent webchat, “that being said, when we set out to do it Jenny and I were not we were not necessarily thinking that way,” he proclaims. “We’re not that smart man, nor that altruistic,” co-creator Jenny Lumet interjects with a laugh. “I think we both came at it from very weird personal and instinctual places and we said yes before we really knew what we are unleashing upon ourselves,” she reveals. “I was not familiar with ‘The Man Who Fell to Earth’ before signing on to do this project,” admits Naomie Harris, the star of Showtime’s sci-fi drama based on the 1976 David Bowie film. “I had to educate myself about it and go back and watch the movie. The movie is a little impenetrable, it really is for proper movie buffs, but I was blown away by David Bowie’s performance.” Watch our full interview with Harris above.
In Showtime’s inspired continuation of the novel by Walter Tevis and the iconic film, an alien named Faraday (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor) crashes deep into the oilfields of New Mexico with a mission: he must find the brilliant scientist Justin Falls (Harris), the one woman on earth who can help save his species. Even as he struggles to adapt to our world and to become more “human,” her faith in humanity couldn’t be lower.

“I really believe that music is the heart of the narrative,” declares Emmy-winning composer Jeff Russo about the power of a great film or TV score. “It’s our responsibility to be the undercurrent to what the feeling of the story is; whether that feeling is love, hate, tension, anxiety. Any one of those feelings that the characters get to feel during the story should be underscored by us and brought out to a certain degree,” he says about the composer’s primary role. “Part of what I think a composer’s job is as well is to figure out where to not put music, not necessarily always where to put music, because a lot of times, the absence of music can also evoke certain feelings.”

Ground control to Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet: the stars are aligned, but look very different today. The Man Who Fell to Earth is a standalone sequel series, using Nicholas Roeg’s 1976 film as an alternative energy source. With Walter Tevis’ 1963 science fiction novel The Man Who Fell to Earth as a launching pad, the film starred David Bowie as Thomas Jerome Newton, an overstay from a galaxy not that far away. Showtime’s new series stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as K. Faraday. He is an immigrant from that same planet, Anthea.
The fusion between the two projects is clear from the opening mission statement. Newton came to “the planet of water,” because his home planet is burning dry. Earth has the resources he needs to save it, but terrestrial forces get in the way. The new series takes place half a century after Newton built a corporate conglomerate with...

On this episode of Deadline’s Scene 2 Scene Podcast, I talk with Oscar nominated actors Chiewtel Ejiofor and Naomie Harris about the Showtime sci-fi series, The Man Who Fell To Earth. In tune with the theme of the show, the three of us share our their experiences with otherness (which is defined as the quality or fact of being different.), and being an outsider.
Co-written and executive produced by Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet, The Man Who Fell To Earth follows a new alien character Faraday, (Ejiofor), who arrives on Earth looking for quantum physics scientist Justin Falls (Harris) while human evolution is at a turning point. “I had seen the David Bowie film and I loved it,” says Chiwetel Ejiofor, the star of Showtime’s sci-fi drama “The Man Who Fell to Earth,” which is based on the 1976 Bowie film. “I had seen it when I was a kid so there were certain things that went over my head. I thought it was beautiful and brilliant, but it was strange and kind of wild. What I took away from it on that first viewing was this iconic center of this extraordinary performance and persona that David Bowie had.” Watch our full interview with Ejiofor above.

Since it was first published in 1976 by author Walter Tevis, “The Man Who Fell to Earth” has always been a cautionary sci-fi tale about Earth’s dwindling resources and humanity’s distraction by media and vice. This is true of the 1976 Nicolas Roeg feature film adaptation starring David Bowie, and also of the new Showtime series which expands on the original story of the alien who comes to Earth in search of water for his dying planet. In the original narrative, Thomas Joseph Newton is from the planet Anthea and uses his advanced technology to create several inventions making him the richest man on Earth. The new series, created by showrunner and co-executive producer Alex Kurtzman (“Star Trek: Discovery”) and co-executive producer and writer Jenny Lumet (“Clarice”), take us on a similar journey.

More than 45 years after “The Man Who Fell to Earth” opened with a melancholy David Bowie crash-landing in a Kentucky lake, Showtime’s new sequel series sends Chiwetel Ejiofor spiraling into the New Mexican desert to finish what he started. The connection between the 1976 film and this 2022 show is clear from the beginning, even before Bill Nighy shows up as the older version of Bowie’s character, Thomas Newton. And yet there’s not a whole lot that Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet’s more straightforward version shares with its stylish predecessor beyond their shared premise.
Some of that stark difference is by design, especially when it comes to the particular space oddity anchoring this continuation. In the first four episodes of the season, Ejiofor’s Farraday represents the show’s most purposeful and successful deviation from the one at the heart of Walter Tevis’ novel and Nicolas Roeg’s adaptation,...
