Nine years after Robert Durst’s shocking hot mic confession in “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst” rocked the world (and the true-crime genre), the case continues. HBO is set to premiere “The Jinx: Part Two,” a six-episode continuation to the groundbreaking, Emmy-winning documentary series that will walk viewers through the eight years of investigation that followed its finale as the filmmakers uncover hidden and new material (including Durst’s prison calls) and interview witnesses who had not come forward until now. Produced and directed by Part One’s Andrew Jarecki, “The Jinx: Part Two” will premiere on Sunday, April 21, at 10 p.m. Et on HBO and will be available to stream on Max at that time. The push-pull of the true-crime genre is that, no matter how much it intends to give a voice to the victims, it more often gives notoriety to the accused.
This is certainly the case if the accused is someone like Robert Durst, the bumbling, garrulous, eccentric, and wealthy septuagenarian at the center of Andrew Jarecki, Marc Smerling, and Zac Stuart-Pontier’s Emmy-winning 2015 docuseries, The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst. That program famously included Durst seemingly confessing to three murders — the 1982 disappearance and assumed death of his first wife, Kathie Durst, the 2000 shooting of his friend Susan Berman, and the 2001 killing and dismembering of his neighbor Morris Black — because a hot mic caught him muttering to himself “killed them all, of course.”...

For my money, Andrew Jarecki's 2015 documentary series "The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst" is the greatest true crime documentary ever made. It has everything you could ever want in a documentary of that genre: a bizarre compelling subject at its center, class commentary, archival footage of his highly publicized murder trial, tons of access to the man himself, a discovery of new evidence in a separate case against him, a direct confrontation, and, famously, a jaw-dropping ending in which the subject confesses his crimes to himself after an interview because he didn't realize his microphone was still on. The scope of the story is truly incredible, and I remember devouring the news about Durst being arrested the day before the final episode aired.
Nine years later, Jarecki is back with "The Jinx: Part Two," which lays out exactly how Durst was caught and details his new...

So close but no conviction. Investigator Joseph Becerra was ready to bring convicted murderer and millionaire Robert Durst to trial for the murder of his wife Kathie, but Durst died in prison before the family had a chance to have their day in court.
“My biggest frustration in all of it was the fact that I couldn’t bring him back to New York to be arraigned,” Becerra told Showbiz Cheat Sheet about Durst. “I was hoping at some point he would tell me where Kathie’s body is. But we were never able to do that.”

Durst was convicted of murdering his close friend Susan Berman following an acquittal in the murder of his neighbor. In 2000, Berman was found in her home with a gunshot wound to the head. Durst was tried and convicted for her murder 21 years later. He was sentenced to life without parole.

Robert Durst, who was sentenced earlier this week to life without parole after being convicted for murdering his friend, has been placed on a ventilator after contracting Covid-19, his lawyer said Saturday.
Durst, 78, was sentenced Thursday for murdering friend Susan Berman in 2000. The real estate scion was already in dire health straits during the sentencing hearing, according to his lead defense attorney, Dick DeGuerin.
“He was having difficulty breathing and he was having difficulty communicating,” DeGuerin said in an email to the Los Angeles Times. “He looked worse than I’ve ever seen him and I was very worried about him.”
Durst has been held under guard in a wing of USC Medical Center during his murder trial.

Robert Durst was sentenced to life in prison without parole on Thursday for the first-degree murder of his friend, Susan Berman, 20 years ago.
The 78-year-old real estate heir was convicted in September of killing Berman, who was found dead in her home in December 2000. Durst has been accused of killing Berman so that she would not speak to authorities regarding the 1982 disappearance of his first wife Kathie McCormack Durst, whose body has never been discovered.
Durst was convicted of a special circumstances murder, meaning that he could only be sentenced to life in prison without parole or receive the death penalty. The Los Angeles District Attorney’s office did not pursue the death penalty for Durst. Durst’s attorney, Dick DeGuerin, filed a motion for a new trial, which was denied by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Mark Windham.

Robert Durst, the infamous millionaire real-estate heir convicted last month in the 2000 murder of close friend Susan Berman, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole today. Robert Durst, the New York real estate heir, was convicted on Friday of murdering his friend, Susan Berman, more than 20 years ago.
Durst, 78, was accused of murdering Berman to keep her from talking to authorities about the death of his first wife, Kathie, whose body has never been discovered.
Berman was found dead in her home in December 2000, after authorities were alerted by a letter to the presence of a “cadaver” at the address. Durst admitted in testimony at trial to writing the letter, but denied responsibility for Berman’s death.

Update: Former `Saturday Night Live cast member Laraine Newman took the witness stand today for the second time at the murder trial of real estate scion Robert Durst.
Newman reiterated her claim that she was “ashamed” for not recognizing the importance of her friend, Susan Berman, telling her that she had helped Durst pull a ruse in the mysterious disappearance of his first wife, Kitty Durst. Berman told Newman she made a phone call posing as Kitty Durst after she disappeared. Kitty Durst was never seen again and finally was declared dead.
Ironically, Robert Durst is now on trial for Berman’s murder in December 2000.
Newman said under cross-examination that she told Deputy District Attorney John Lewin in 2015 that
“there were times” that she was confused as to whether what Berman said was true or not. She added that Berman subsequently rescinded her account about the alibi and it was never again discussed.

Two decades after the murder of Susan Berman, her friend and former employer Robert Durst is going on trial for the crime. From Jack the Ripper to John Wayne Gacy to Aileen Wuornos, the horrific legacies of serial killers have managed to both appall and intrigue, as people attempt to explore and understand the darkest depths of the human psyche. Hollywood has mined this territory for years, with dozens of scripted true-crime movies and TV series exploring the “why” of those who snap.
But why are we so obsessed? Alex Wolff, who stars in the new movie My Friend Dahmer, about the high school years of the notorious mass murderer Jeffrey Dahmer, has a theory. “People are interested in seeing how things happen and maybe finding out what things could be different,” he tells Et. “Like, what is it about him that’s so different from me, or my next-door neighbor who seems a little bit off?
