Schitt’s Creek star Emily Hampshire has apologized for her Halloween costume choice following criticism of her and a friend dressing up as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard.
The actress issued a public apology for their decision to dress up as the ex-couple.
“I want to address what is one of the most thoughtless, insensitive, and ignorant things I’ve ever done. For Halloween, I stupidly thought it would be funny to dress as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard,” she said in a post to Instagram. “I am deeply sorry and ashamed for putting something that awful out in the universe. Domestic abuse is never, ever funny. These are real issues with real people and I really regret my actions.”
Depp sued Heard for defamation in 2019 after accusing her of lying in a Washington Post article a year prior. Heard also counter-sued for defamation following comments made by Depp’s lawyer Adam Waldman.

Amber Heard has agreed to a legal settlement with her ex-husband and fellow actor Johnny Depp, who sued her for defamation after she suggested he abused her in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed.
Heard, 36, had previously been ordered pay more than 10m in damages to Depp, 56. Depp, meanwhile, was ordered to pay Heard 2m after she filed a countersuit accusing him of defamation after his lawyer, Adam Waldman, called her abuse claims a “hoax”.

Amber Heard has announced that she has settled her defamation case against ex-husband Johnny Depp.
The Aquaman star, 36, shared a post to her Instagram page calling the decision to settle with Depp “very difficult”, and something that had required “a great deal of deliberation”.
“After a great deal of deliberation I have made a very difficult decision to settle the defamation case brought against me by my ex-husband in Virginia,” she wrote.
“It’s important for me to say that I never chose this. I defended my truth and in doing so my life as I knew it was destroyed. The vilification I have faced on social media is an amplified version of the ways in which women are re-victimised when they come forward.”
Heard said that in settling, she finally had an opportunity to “emancipate myself from something I attempted to leave over six years ago and on terms I can agree to.

Amber Heard filed a notice of appeal on Thursday of the 10 million defamation verdict that a Virginia jury awarded to her ex-husband, Johnny Depp.
Heard’s lawyers had announced they would appeal immediately after the jury found on June 1 that she had defamed Depp by publishing an op-ed in the Washington Post in which she described herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” The jury held that the statement was false and was made with “actual malice.”
“We believe the court made errors that prevented a just and fair verdict consistent with the First Amendment,” Heard’s spokesperson said on Thursday. “We are therefore appealing the verdict. While we realize today’s filing will ignite the Twitter bonfires, there are steps we need to take to ensure both fairness and justice.”
The two-paragraph notice does not spell out the grounds for Heard’s appeal.

Amber Heard’s lawyers on Friday asked for a mistrial in the Johnny Depp defamation case after learning that the wrong juror showed up to court.
Heard’s attorneys say they recently discovered that one of the seven jurors had not received a jury summons. Instead, the summons went to a person in the same household with the same last name, who is 25 years older. The names were redacted from the filing, and it is not clear what their relationship is.
“As the Court no doubt agrees, it is deeply troubling for an individual not summoned for jury duty nonetheless to appear for jury duty and serve on a jury, especially in a case such as this,” wrote Heard’s attorneys, led by Elaine Bredehoft. “This was a high-profile case, where the fact and date of the jury trial were highly publicized prior to and after the issuance of the juror summonses.

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard spent the better part of their defamation trial slinging mud. Amber Heard is disappointed “beyond words” regarding the verdict to Johnny Depp’s defamation lawsuit against her. The jury in the trial ruled that Heard defamed Depp when she wrote a 2018 Washington Post op-ed alluding to her past claims of domestic violence. Heard is now ordered to pay 15 million in damages to Depp.
“The disappointment I feel today is beyond words,” Heard wrote in a statement. “I’m heartbroken that the mountain of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence, and sway of my ex-husband.”
Heard continued, “I’m even more disappointed with what this verdict means for other women. It is a setback. It sets back the clock to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated. It sets back the idea that violence against women is to be taken seriously.”

(Updated with more details & statements) Johnny Depp has won his defamation trial against Amber Heard, a Virginia jury decided Wednesday.
After less than three days of deliberation, the seven-person panel ruled that the Aquaman star defamed Depp in a late 2018 Washington Post op-ed. In the piece, Heard described herself as the “public face of domestic abuse,” more than two years after she accused Depp of physical abuse and obtained a restraining order against him.
Depp was seeking 50 million in damages, but the jury has awarded him 15 million — 10 million in compensatory damages and 5 million in punitive damages. However, Judge Penney Azcarate quickly reduced the punitive damages figure to 350,000, the maximum allowed in the state, which makes Depp’s total haul around 10.4 million.

Johnny Depp Wins 15 Million in Defamation Case, While Amber Heard Awarded 2 Million for Counterclaim
Johnny Depp has been awarded 15 million in his defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard.
The jury’s verdict, which found both parties liable, was reached Wednesday in a Virginia court after the panel spent three days deliberating over more than six weeks of grueling, emotional and highly contradictory testimony in a case focused on a Washington Post op-ed written by Heard.
Depp was awarded 10 million in compensatory damages and 5 million dollars in punitive damages, while the jury awarded Heard 2 million in compensatory damages and nothing in punitive damages. Depp had sought 50 million in damages with Heard counter-suing for 100 million.
Heard was present in the courtroom for the verdict while Depp watched on TV from the U.K., where he had traveled after testimony ended Friday to perform with legendary rocker Jeff Beck, for a show in Sheffield and two at Royal Albert Hall in London.

A Virginia jury has found that Amber Heard defamed Johnny Depp when she wrote a 2018 Washington Post op-ed alluding to her past claims of domestic violence.
However, the jury also found that Depp defamed Heard, through his attorney, in the course of fighting back against her charges. Second Update: Johnny Depp’s attorney wrapped up their final arguments by focusing in part on Amber Heard’s 100 million counterclaim.
Camille Vasquez told jurors that in suing Depp for defamation, Heard has to “prove that her abuse claims are not a hoax.”
Heard’s counterclaim centers on statements made by Adam Waldman, who said in statements made to the Daily Mail that Heard’s allegations of abuse were falsified.
Vasquez said that there is “clear evidence that Waldman believed that Heard committed a hoax.” Depp’s attorney also tried to undermine Heard’s argument that Waldman’s statements caused her reputational harm, arguing that her negative press coverage had nothing to do with the remarks.
She also challenged Heard’s claims for damages, noting the testimony of Warner Bros. executive Walter Hamada, who said that the actress’ paycheck was not reduced for Aquaman 2 even though her role was reduced.

On May 26, the Aquaman actress returned to the stand as the final witness to testify in the highly publicized trial. During her rebuttal testimony, Heard was asked to explain how she has suffered following statements made by Depp's former attorney, Adam Waldman, to the Daily Mail in 2020, in which he described her allegations of abuse as a "hoax." Update: Both sides in the Johnny Depp-Amber Heard defamation case have now rested their case, with the jury scheduled to hear closing arguments on Friday morning.
Judge Penney Azcarate indicated that the jury may begin deliberations on Friday afternoon, but would not return until Tuesday after the holiday weekend.
Heard was the final witness to testify in the six-week trial, and she delivered an emotional message to jurors.
“Johnny promised me … he would ruin me, that he would ruin my career,” Heard said, as she looked toward the panel. “He promised global humiliation, you saw those texts.”
She denied faking her bruises and fabricating photos, as she sought to remind the jury that there were “so many pictures, so much evidence” that is unusual for a case of domestic violence abuse.

Johnny Depp again denied on Wednesday that he had been violent toward his ex-wife, Amber Heard, calling her testimony in the ongoing defamation case “insane” and “horrible.”

Depp is suing Heard for alluding to her domestic violence allegations against him in an op-ed in 2018, while Heard is countersuing him over statements his lawyer made accusing her of perpetrating an “abuse hoax.” Each has accused the other of damaging their careers.

Amber Heard’s attorneys rested their case Tuesday, opening the door for Johnny Depp’s legal team to call a rebuttal witness who cast doubt on Heard’s likeability and star power.
Before entertainment attorney and Hollywood “dealmaker” Richard Marks took the stand, Depp’s lawyers argued to have Heard’s 100 million counterclaim for defamation dismissed. Judge Penney Azcarate denied the motion and ruled the jury should decide, before the proceedings continued.

Johnny Depp’s legal team started their rebuttal testimony on Tuesday with the video deposition of Walter Hamada, the Warner Bros. executive who said that their concerns over casting Amber Heard in the Aquaman sequel had to do with her chemistry with Jason Momoa.
In her 100 million counterclaim to Depp’s defamation lawsuit and her testimony, Heard contended that her role was reduced as she faced a “smear campaign” orchestrated by her ex husband as well as the legal proceedings against her.
Hamada, in deposition testimony recorded earlier this year, said that there was a delay in the studio’s option to cast Heard in the sequel because of the concerns over her chemistry with Momoa in the first movie.
“You know it when you see it, and the chemistry wasn’t there,” Hamada said.
He said that their interactions were improved in the first Aquaman via post-production editing and input from director James Wan.

A Virginia judge on Tuesday denied Johnny Depp’s motion to dismiss Amber Heard’s counterclaim, ruling that the issue should be decided by the jury.
The counterclaim alleges that Depp’s attorney, Adam Waldman, defamed Heard and damaged her career when he accused her and her friends of perpetrating an “abuse hoax.” Heard’s side rested their case Tuesday morning, prompting Depp’s team to make the routine motion to dismiss the claim.
Depp’s attorney, Ben Chew, argued that Waldman was offering his opinion, and that therefore he cannot have committed defamation. Chew also argued that there is no evidence that Depp saw or knew about Waldman’s statements until the counterclaim was filed.

The judge in the Johnny Depp-Amber Heard defamation trial rejected the actor’s effort to reject his 100 million counterclaim.
Heard’s counterclaim centers on statements made by an attorney for Depp, Adam Waldman, who claimed in a Daily Mail interview that the actresses’ allegations of domestic abuse were fabricated. Judge Penney Azcarate said that there was enough evidence to show that Waldman was acting as an agent for Depp, rejecting the actor’s attorney’s argument that Heard should be suing Waldman, not her ex-husband.
Azcarate’s decision is not surprise, as motions to strike routinely come during trial proceedings and rarely are granted, reflecting the high threshold for dismissing a case before it gets to the jury. Depp’s attorney Benjamin Chew argued for their motion on Tuesday morning, just before Heard’s legal team rested their case.
The judge previously denied Heard’s motion to strike Depp’s case.

The judge previously denied Heard’s motion to strike Depp’s case.

Amber Heard was told to stay away from DC FanDome amid her legal battle with Johnny Depp, a Hollywood insider testified Monday in Depp’s defamation trial against his ex-wife.
Kathryn Arnold, who described herself as an “entertainment industry consultant,” took the witness stand in Fairfax, Virginia, and said Heard has been iced out of promotional events for “Aquaman 2.”
“Ms. Heard was not invited to be either in the poster or to be at the [FanDome] event, and, in fact, they told her she cannot come,” Arnold said.
DC did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

An entertainment industry expert testified Monday that Amber Heard lost 45 million to 50 million in endorsements and TV and film income over claims that she faked domestic violence allegations against ex-husband Johnny Depp.
Heard’s team called the expert, Kathryn Arnold, as well as a psychiatrist and an orthopedic surgeon as the defamation trial began its sixth and final week. Heard’s lawyers were also expected to call Depp to the stand on Monday, but they ultimately decided they did not need his testimony. Depp previously testified over four days in April.
Heard’s side is seeking to prove that she suffered a severe career setback after Depp’s lawyer, Adam Waldman, accused her of perpetrating an “abuse hoax” in 2020. Arnold testified that Heard cannot find work in major studio projects because of the volume of online vitriol she continues to face.
“In the industry, they like her work,” Arnold said.

Amber Heard’s lawyers depicted actor Johnny Depp on Thursday as a fallen idol undone by his substance abuse, profligate spending, and unchecked anger — and not by the 2018 op-ed his ex-wife wrote about being a victim of domestic violence.
Witnesses called by Heard, the defendant in Depp’s 50 million defamation case, said the Pirates of the Caribbean star went from the top of Hollywood’s A-list to someone struggling to find work and pay his bills despite having earned more than 600 million. “He was the biggest star in the world,...

Amber Heard’s agent testified Thursday that she lost out on job opportunities amid the online backlash over her abuse allegations against ex-husband Johnny Depp.
Jessica Kovacevic, Heard’s agent at WME, was the last of a series of witnesses called by Heard’s attorneys on Thursday. After spending several days defending her from Depp’s defamation claim, Heard’s team is now on offense, seeking to prove their 100 million counterclaim that Heard’s career was harmed by Depp’s lawyer, who called her allegations a “hoax.”
Heard was the female lead in “Aquaman,” which grossed more than 1 billion worldwide upon its release in December 2018. Kovacevic said that should have led to more roles in TV and film, along with endorsement deals. But aside from “Aquaman 2,” Heard has shot only a single independent film, “In the Fire,” in the last two years.

The attorney who represented Johnny Depp in his failed 2019-2020 defamation case against Amber Heard became a witness Thursday in the U.S. version, telling the court via pre-recorded deposition that he still believes Heard set up Depp in what he once called an “abuse hoax.”
“Yes, to some extent I have seen evidence of things that show her statements to be false,” Adam Waldman testified Thursday.
Remarks Waldman made to media during the U.K.-based trial are the basis of Heard’s 100 million counterclaim against Depp for defamation. Depp is suing Heard for 50 million, saying she libeled him in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed.

Update, 1 Pm Pt: Johnny Depp was “drunk a lot of the time,” Ellen Barkin told a Virginia courtroom today of her Fear and Loathing in Last Vegas co-star in his 50 million defamation suit against Amber Heard.
The highest-profile witness to give testimony at the April 11 starting trial, Barkin’s stint on the virtual stand was relatively short and scathing for Depp. In a video deposition from November 22, 2019, the Emmy-winning actress told the court Thursday that Depp was always drinking or smoking a joint during their time as a couple of sorts in the mid-1990s.

Johnny Depp’s own behavior – no-shows, lateness, daily intoxication – caused his career to suffer, making it “far more complicated” to represent him in the years before his troubles with ex-wife Amber Heard became public, his former talent agent testified Thursday in a videotaped deposition.
Tracy Jacobs said she represented Depp for 30 years at ICM Partners and United Talent Agency before she was fired in 2016. Jacobs said she doesn’t know why Depp let her go.

Updated, 1:38 Pm: Amber Heard suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, a clinical and forensic psychologist told a Virginia jury today in Johnny Depp’s 50 million defamation trial against the Aquaman star over Heard’s 2018 Washington Post op-ed on domestic violence. In potentially damning testimony, Dr. Dawn Hughes also said that Heard repeatedly was “subjected to sexual violence” from Depp.
“There are a number of incidents of sexual violence reported in this relationship,” Hughes testified. “Those are documented early on … where when Mr. Depp was drunk or high. He threw her on the bed, ripped off her nightgown and tried to have sex with her,” she specified. Johnny Depp’s defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard opened Tuesday in Fairfax, Virginia with explosive allegations of “excessive” drug and alcohol use, and claims of physical and psychological abuse in the couple’s marriage.
Depp’s attorneys Benjamin Chew and co-council Camille Vasquez painted Heard as the aggressor, telling the jury that the actress and model concocted stories of abuse because Depp “wanted out” and told his wife it was time to divorce.
Depp is suing his ex-wife for 50 million claiming she libeled him in a 2018 op-ed piece in the Washington Post, costing him a lucrative role in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise. Although Heard didn’t name Depp in the article, she described herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.”

The current global pandemic managed to put Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s court feud on hiatus for a little while, but it seems that the ex-couple will be back at each other’s throats in no time.
So far as the Aquaman star is concerned, though, things have been in favor of her former husband. The Pirates of the Caribbean actor not only has the goodwill of the press and media but also incriminating evidence that could prove that his then-wife was the one who emotionally and physically abused him during their marriage. This is especially interesting when you consider that the narrative up to this point was pretty much the other way around. Apparently, not only did Heard repeatedly harass Depp, but also cheated on him and faked evidence to ruin her husband’s life, the latter of which could actually mean prison time for the actress.

Going over her schedule today before the assault trial set to start October 21, Judge Holly Fujie decided the three-day matter would be better dealt with next spring – May 11, 2020 to be exact.
If his deposition of September 11 is any road map, Depp was prepared to testify October 22 that he did not hit City of Lies location manager Gregg “Rocky” Brooks in an altercation on the set of the Brad Furman-directed flick in April 2017 – a Pov that Brooks clearly does not share.

Just under a week after filing to have ex-husband Johnny Depp’s $50 million defamation suit tossed out, Amber Heard today went to court to force the Pirates of the Caribbean actor to hand over documents and other material related to his “drug and alcohol abuse” plus “incidents of domestic violence and abuse.”
“Mr. Depp cannot seek to litigate the truth of Ms. Heard’s allegations about his violent and abusive behavior while intoxicated, insist on proceeding without a protective order, and then blithely refuse to produce evidence that confirms the truth of those allegations on grounds of relevance and ‘privacy,’” asserts the Aquaman actor’s Virginia lawyer J. Benjamin Rottenborn in a memorandum accompany a motion to compel entered into the docket in the Old Dominion on Thursday (read it here).
“In Mr. Depp’s self-serving view, his privacy justifies denying discovery essential to Ms. Heard’s defense, but somehow...

Updated with lawyers statements: Amber Heard may be forced to fight the $50 million defamation lawsuit brought by her ex-husband Johnny Depp in Virginia after all, but the Aquaman star delivered a one-two punch Friday.
Having lost her attempt to move the matter to California back in July, Heard has filed a new motion to dismiss the wide-ranging complaint by the Pirates of the Caribbean star. The activist actor has also bulked up her legal team with the addition of Time’s Up legal defense fund co-founder Roberta Kaplan.
Simply put, Heard, the author of a 2018 Washington Post op-ed about domestic violence and the backlash women often suffer, isn’t messing around.
“It appears that Mr. Depp desperately hopes to put his whole marriage on trial, or to wage
legal warfare over Ms. Heard’s decision to report his abuse in 2016,” asserts a memorandum of law (read it here) accompanying the motions.

Johnny Depp is making new allegations against Amber Heard.

The actor’s attorney Adam Waldman said in a statement obtained by People, “Today we replied in court to the Sun’s cut and paste “defense” of Amber Heard’s latest abuse hoaxes.

Johnny Depp and his former lawyers have another new trial date. Splitting the difference between what the parties desired, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge agreed Wednesday to move the start of the trial in the former Pirates of the Caribbean star’s nearly two-year-old $50 million malpractice lawsuit against Bloom Hergott Diemer Rosenthal Laviolette Feldman Schenkman & Goodman Llp to December 2.
Led by Bryan Freedman, attorneys for the now retiring Jacob Bloom and crew recently advocated moving the already scheduled trial launch from September 16 to next March.
Saying that he is obliged to “get cases resolved within two years,” Judge Terry Green made the call today on a packed morning in the Dtla courtroom, after having to deal with other matters while waiting for one of Depp’s lawyers to show up due to a medical emergency.
Near the top of this morning’s hearing, Green first penciled in a trial kickoff date of November 4. However,...
