From October of 1972 through August of 1975, Marvel Comics published twenty-one issues of a horror comic called Crypt of Shadows. That series got a one-shot revival in 2019, and now Marvel has announced that there’s going to be another one-shot revival of Crypt of Shadows this October – and this time the horror comic book is going to feature several Marvel superhero characters!
Set to reach store shelves on October 18th, the new Crypt of Shadows #1 is coming our way from writers Al Ewing, Steve Orlando, Sarah Gailey, Cavan Scott, and Declan Shalvey, and artists Paul Davidson, Paul Azaceta, Eder Messias, Devmalya Pramanik, and Alex Lins. Leinil Francis Yu has created the cover for the issue, and you can check that out at the bottom of this article.

This post contains spoilers for "Star Wars: The High Republic: Path of Vengeance" by Cavan Scott, released May 2, 2023.
For those unfamiliar with the Star Wars era of the High Republic, it's set between a few hundred and a hundred and fifty years before the events of "The Phantom Menace." There, the Jedi and the Republic are both in their prime. Leslye Headland's upcoming show "The Acolyte" promises to be the cap on the era that leads to the eventual fall of the Jedi, but in the meantime, we're being treated with an epic story told across many books compliments of the Lucasfilm publishing program.
Phase One introduced us to the Nihil, a deadly band of pirates led by Marchion Ro and their vendetta against the Jedi. Phase Two, where we are now, took us back in time another hundred or more years, to a time when the Path of...

Tomorrow, "The Art of Star Wars: The High Republic (Volume One)" by Kristin Baver (with a foreword by Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy) hits newsstands. "The High Republic" was unique among Disney's "Star Wars" publishing goals in that they brought in artists like Ian McCaig to do a blue sky development phase with a whole writing team. It's not something that's been done before, and this book documents a lot of the iteration and thought behind the visuals we've been seeing across the program. It was a useful tool to unite the writers and comic book artists into a single vision as they told their stories. It's also served to create a cohesion in design for readers, allowing us to have a unified view of what we were supposed to imagine in a universe as concerned with canon and accuracy as the entirety of "Star Wars."

A young woman's nightmares have deadly consequences in the real world in Legendary Comics and Rocketship Entertainment's new graphic novel Sleep Terrors. Written by Cavan Scott with artwork by Stephanie Son, Sleep Terrors is now on Kickstarter, and we've been provided with an exclusive preview to share with Daily Dead readers!
Here's what Cavan Scott had to say about the genesis for Sleep Terrors and some of the inspirations behind the graphic novel:
Have you ever been cut off on the road by another driver or had a stranger shout at you without provocation? It’s natural to feel aggrieved, and maybe even forgivable to hope that karma plays a hand in the day of the aggressor. That’s where the original spark for Sleep Terrors came from; the admittedly dark wish fulfillment that we could somehow magically take revenge on those who wrong us.

When Black Adam dropped its first trailer Wednesday, viewers saw Dwayne Johnson trade barbs with a team of heroes that may be unfamiliar to general audiences. That superhero team, the Justice Society, will rise to new levels of public consciousness when the film opens in October, and DC is hoping to capitalize on that high-profile debut.
Thus, DC is launching The Justice Society Files, a four-issue series debuting in July. The main cover will be from artist Kaare Andrews, and each issue will have a variant cover featuring the likeness of the four actors who make up the Justice Society — Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell), Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo — though his face is obscured) and Dr. Fate (Pierce Brosnan).
Cavan Scott, known for his work on Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The High Republic initiative, penned the four-issue series and collaborated with a roster of artists.

Let’s face it, things don’t look so good for Obi-Wan Kenobi. The upcoming Disney+ series seems to find the Jedi Master at his lowest point, living in exile after Order 66, hiding from the Grand Inquisitor, and still reeling from his failure with Anakin Skywalker. With increasing reports that the series will show the full horror of the Empire’s rise to power, it’s no wonder that some Star Wars fans are longing for happier times for the future Ben Kenobi.
Fortunately, the new novel Star Wars: Brotherhood returns readers to a slightly longer long time ago, before everything went so wrong for Kenobi. Written by Mike Chen and set shortly after Attack of the Clones, the novel follows Obi-Wan and Anakin’s investigation into terrorist activity on Cato Neimoidia, a hub world in the Trade Federation.

Exclusive: Comic book and graphic novel publisher Idw has unveiled nine new original comic book projects set for release beginning in July as part of a new initiative. While the focus is on creating new comic book IP, following publishing of the comics, the Idw Entertainment Group will work to potentially develop the IP for film, television and other entertainment mediums the way the company has done in the past with such titles as Wynonna Earp and Locke & Key.
Reflecting genres including crime thriller, supernatural horror, science fiction and epic fantasy, the projects hail from New York Times bestselling authors, top industry artists and writers, as well as newcomers, including Scott Snyder, G. Willow Wilson and Stephen Graham Jones, among others. Additionally, Idw has additional projects underway for 2023 and beyond, including a comic book series by Academy Award–winning director, screenwriter, novelist, and showrunner John Ridley and several original graphic novels aimed at middle grade and YA audiences.
Beginning with Scott Snyder’s Dark Spaces: Wildfire in July (see details below), Idw will be publishing the projects monthly.
“A year ago we gave ourselves a mission: to make Idw the destination for premier talent and rising stars,” says Mark Doyle, editorial director of Originals. “This is an unprecedented moment in Idw’s history, and there’s been a tremendous team effort from our creative and editorial teams and everyone at the company to develop a stellar slate of original stories—and we’re having a blast doing it!”
Here is a trailer for Idw’s new initiative:
“Throughout our history, Idw has provided a supportive environment for passionate creators to pursue their artistic vision, taking form as such beloved titles as 30 Days of Night, Locke & Key, V Wars, Canto, October Faction, and Wynonna Earp, just to name a few,” says publisher Nachie Marsham. “Our new Originals editorial division, spearheaded by Mark Doyle, reflects our commitment to building upon that legacy. More than ever before, we are reaching out to the creative community, welcoming fresh ideas that span a diverse range of genres, and offering audiences wild new worlds to explore.”
The first nine projects are:
Dark Spaces: Wildfire, a thriller series written by Scott Snyder with art by Hayden Sherman, follows a group of female inmate firefighters deep into the smoldering California hills, where their desperate heist of a burning mansion will lead them to the score of a lifetime…or a deadly trap!
Trve Kvlt, a five-issue miniseries written by Scott Bryan Wilson with art by Liana Kangas, introduces Marty Tarantella, a down-on-his-luck loser whose last-ditch scheme to escape a lifetime of fast-food service sets him on a collision course with a cult of violent, Devil-worshiping lunatics!
Crashing, a five-issue miniseries written by Matthew Klein with art by Morgan Beem, throws open the doors of an emergency room filled with casualties of a superhuman war, where Rose Osler, a doctor on her own path of addiction and recovery, faces the most dangerous day of her medical career.
Earthdivers, an ongoing series written by Stephen Graham Jones with art by Davide Gianfelice, unites four Indigenous survivors in an apocalyptic near future as they embark on a bloody, one-way mission to save the world by traveling back in time to kill Christopher Columbus and prevent the creation of America.
Dead Seas, a six-issue miniseries written by Cavan Scott with art by Nick Brokenshire, transforms a cynical convict into a reluctant hero when he’s trapped on a sinking prison ship swarming with ghosts. Can he unite desperate criminals, pirates, and brutal guards as they try to escape a watery grave?
Golgotha Motor Mountain, a five-issue miniseries written by Matthew Erman and Lonnie Nadler with art by Ryan Lee, is a high-octane, redneck motor massacre about two meth-cooking brothers and their attempt to make it home in one piece as all manner of cosmic alien horrors are hot on their trail.
Arca, an original graphic novel written by Van Jensen with art by Jesse Lonergan, leaves a dying Earth behind as billionaires establish a luxurious new society out among the stars, tended to by teenage indentured servants. But one girl discovers that the good life promised for their years of servitude was a lie…
The Sin Bin, a six-issue miniseries written by Robbie Thompson with art by Molly Murakami, hits the road with washed-up hockey player Dale “Dukes” Duquesne, who moonlights as a monster hunter during away games with his daughter, Cat, in tow, hoping to find her mother’s killer.
The Hunger and the Dusk, a twelve-issue storyline written by G. Willow Wilson with art by Chris Wildgoose, upends an age-old conflict between humans and orcs by introducing a new, deadlier species. Fragile alliances form—and unexpected romances blossom—as former enemies wade into battle together to save their two races.

You know the score by now with these 100 page anniversary specials. They are a celebration of some of the most iconic characters DC has on their roster, with a nice blend of multiple covers by great artists, around a dozen stories by different writers and artists and some bonus pin-ups. Pricey, but usually worth the money. Aquaman is certainly worthy of celebration, reaching 80 years in print is no mean feat after all, though he’s not always been such a celebrated character. Often the focus of ridicule in fact, despite being one of the longest serving members of the Justice League. I always liked the classic Aquaman personally, not so much the post-Peter David version, hook for hand and all. To each their own though. Which is lucky, as you can choose from the following 11 stories and eras. Let’s take a look.
For the second year in a row, San Diego Comic-Con — the largest fan gathering in North America — has been forced by the pandemic to hold its annual convention as a virtual event. Last year’s Comic-Con@Home was a valiant effort to keep the 51-year tradition alive, but without marquee draws such as Marvel Studios and DC Films, it barely made a blip in terms of social media impact.
This year’s virtual Comic-Con has been scaled down, taking place largely over three days (July 23–25) instead of five. And with Marvel and DC sitting out once again, Comic-Con@Home promises to be a far more modest event than the gargantuan convention that’s drawn more than 130,000 attendees to San Diego every summer.
Ironically, the most Comic-Con-y event may be a panel Paramount is holding two days early — i.e. today — at 1 p.m. Pt for the “G.I. Joe” spin-off “Snake Eyes,...

You know the drill by now. Whenever there is a holiday or celebration of some sort, DC whip up a fresh helping of their 80 Page Giants. They usually consist of ten or so stories, by a mix of top name creators and some unknowns obviously given a short story assignment to bed them in gradually in readiness for greater things down the line. Story quality is usually as mixed as you would expect, some great stuff, some average, and some filler. Overall, though, you get good value for your money. So, February being Valentines, this time round we are in the mood for love….

Star Wars: The High Republic has finally launched. This new chapter in the franchise is set hundreds of years before the Skywalker saga in a period where the Jedi were ascendant, giving creators room to tell new stories that don’t need to fit into the increasingly cramped existing continuity. The much-hyped line recently began with two novels and a children’s book: Charles Soule’s Light of the Jedi, Justina Ireland’s A Test of Courage and Cavan Scott’s The Great Jedi Rescue. We also now have the inaugural issue of Marvel Comics’ The High Republic comic series, which gives us our first taste of a new version of Yoda.
Being set so many years before the movies means that the vast majority of familiar characters won’t have been born yet, but the long-lived Yoda is here around the height of his powers. As he’s merely 700 rather than 900 years old,...

After the increasingly busy and intertwined events of the Skywalker Saga, I’m looking forward to Star Wars: The High Republic starting with a relatively clean slate. These will be a set of stories in various media taking place 200 years before The Phantom Menace, allowing it to be recognizable as Star Wars while having new characters and settings.
One of the big ideas behind it is that we’ll explore a period in galactic history where the Jedi were at the peak of their powers and influence. At this point, there’ll be what’s been billed as a Jedi Knights of the Round Table, and the primary antagonist will be the Nihil, described as “space Vikings.” The project was due to launch this fall but due to – you guessed it – Covid-19, Lucasfilm announced that The High Republic is delayed and will now kick off in early 2021.

Back to the Future‘s Doc Brown and Marty McFly will help the Autobots sabotage the new Decepticon plan this October in a new comic crossover.
Of all the characters that we’ve imagined bumping into Doc Brown over the years, the Transformers are the most unexpected and impossible choice. After all, one franchise is about the eternal conflict between two robot races that often end up deciding the fate of the world, and the other narrates the story of a mad scientist and a teenage boy who travel back in time. Essentially, Back to the Future and Transformers share few to no similarities whatsoever. Well, except for the fact that Brown and Marty travel time in a Delorean. But what if the time-traveling vehicle was actually a secret Transformer?
This is apparently what the new comic, written by Cavan Scott and illustrated by Juan Samu, will explore this October.

Star Wars never truly showed the heyday of the Jedi in the movies. In the Original Trilogy, the Jedi had already been driven to the brink of extinction, while the Sequel Trilogy showed how Luke Skywalker had failed to train a new generation of Knights. Our best look at the Jedi Order of old is in the Prequel Trilogy, but it quickly becomes clear that those movies are about the fall of the Jedi and not a golden age for the heroes of the light side.
Only now is Star Wars canon officially designating an era where the Jedi are at the height of their powers. Stronger, more in tune with the Force, and more assured than we’ve ever seen them before, the Jedi of the High Republic era are what Jedi are supposed to be.
The High Republic line of books and comics, which will debut on Jan.

The High Republic is the first major Star Wars publishing initiative since the end of the Sequel Trilogy. Set about 200 years before The Phantom Menace, The High Republic line of books and comics shows the Jedi in their heyday, led by new heroes and faced with new enemies and challenges. Made up of three novels (one for each age category) and comic series from Marvel and Idw, the story begins with a “Great Disaster” which disrupts hyperspace travel.

There might not be any new Star Wars movies coming out for the next couple of years, but fans of the saga got some exciting news earlier this year when the Star Wars: The High Republic initiative was announced. The multimedia range of projects – highlighting a hitherto undocumented period of galactic history, featuring all-new characters – was set to get going this fall. However, due to the continuing effects of the coronavirus pandemic, Lucasfilm has today revealed that they’ll be delaying the initiative by a few months and it will now kick off in early 2021.
As per the previous plan, The High Republic will be established with a trio of novels aimed at different audiences. The High Republic, the new series of books and comics set to explore a new era of the Star Wars universe, has been delayed to 2021, according to StarWars.com. In a letter to fans, Lucasfilm Publishing creative director Michael Siglain cited “unprecedented times” as the cause of the delay. While Siglain didn’t say as much, it’s likely that delays in printing and distribution as a result of the coronavirus pandemic are to blame for the date change.
The first two parts of The High Republic, the adult novel Light of the Jedi by Charles Soule and the middle-grade novel A Test of Courage by Justina Ireland, will now release on Jan. 5. The young adult novel Into the Dark by Claudia Gray will hit shelves on Feb. 2. Dates have yet to be set for the new comics series from Marvel and Idw.

The separate but linked tales set in the time of the High Republic, taking place 200 years before The Phantom Menace, will unfold across comics, young adult novels, adult fiction, children’s books and more.

Star Wars‘ Project Luminous has officially been unveiled by Lucasfilm, heralding a new era of stories in a galaxy far, far away. The idea is to start moving away from tales set in the busy years between The Phantom Menace and The Rise of Skywalker and give creatives a blank slate on which to tell stories that won’t create conflicts with continuity.
As such, these new projects will take place in the High Republic, an era set roughly 200 years before the movies in which much of the galaxy remains uncharted and there’s some kind of “Jedi Knights of the Round Table.” The line will begin with novels and comics, and Lucasfilm publishing creative director Michael Siglain billed it as follows:

Star Wars has finally revealed the mystery behind the creation of the Clone Army and how Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas came to commission it before his death.
The clones have always been an integral part of that galaxy far, far away and its conflicts, not only helping the free worlds in their fight against the Confederacy of Independent Systems (Cis) but also playing a key role in the destruction of the Jedi Order and consequently, the Galactic Republic. But we never learned why they were created in the first place.
George Lucas originally wanted to reveal Sifo-Dyas as an alias for Chancellor Palpatine, but he changed the role of the Jedi Master to a patsy for Darth Sidious’ plans. He then decided to reveal his backstory in Revenge of the Sith but ultimately cut those plot points to focus on Anakin and his downfall. As a result, we only got to...

Star Wars returns to the world of horror in 2019's Return to Vader’s Castle.
Idw Publishing has announced a horror-themed Star Wars comics adventure called Star Wars Adventures: Return to Vader’s Castle.
Return to Vader's Castle will follow roughly the same format and tone established by the previous Idw series, Tales from Vader’s Castle. That series told five Star Wars stories mixed with classic horror themes that referenced a variety of classic horror works. This new series offers more of the same, but this time around, the premise is that each of the five stories will focus on a major Star Wars villain.
The first story in the series will focus on Darth Maul, the second tells a tale of Grand Moff Tarkin, the third focuses on noted assassin and Count Dookie disciple, Asajj Ventress, the fourth deals with the horrors of Jabba the Hutt,...

San Diego, CA – Following the success of last year’s Tales from Vader’s Castle comic-book miniseries, Idw Publishing heads back to the lava planet Mustafar for more Halloween-timed storytelling in Star Wars Adventures: Return to Vader’s Castle.
Shipping weekly throughout October, this five-issue story pairs Star Wars Adventures mainstay writer (and returning Vader’s Castle scribe) Cavan Scott with Eisner Award-winning artist Francesco Francavilla (Afterlife with Archie) for the story of torment deep within Fortress Vader, one that frames five tales of terror to thrill young and mature readers alike!

Our Star Wars podcast hosts critique Resistance season 1 and prepare for the onslaught of news from Celebration.
Den of Geek’s Star Wars experts cover this month’s news in on the latest Star Wars Blaster Canon podcast. Star Wars Resistance season one has wrapped up, and we devote most of this episode covering our mixed feelings about the series. The show dovetails with The Force Awakens, bringing the Resistance agents into direct contact with the First Order while continuing to try, with varying success, to tell a story about the average citizen of the galaxy far, far away.
Does Kaz work for us as a main character? Paul doesn’t think so. We speculate about what will happen next season and how the show could become more of an ensemble to take advantage of the characters of the Aces. With the destruction of Hosnian Prime and Tam’s defection,...
