Our American Idol “journey” has come to an end, but let us not weep for what’s been cancelled, let us instead go to iTunes and download the Season 15 winner’s new single. Hey, from a songwriting vantage point, it may not be “Home,” but it definitely ranks above “No Boundaries” and “Inside Your Heaven” — and we bought those, too. And if this show can produce one more bona fide radio/touring superstar, maybe the inevitable reboot will happen sooner than expected, no?

A good American Idol finale is kind of like the Fountain of Youth — and that’s not only a reference to 43-year-old Ricky Martin, 45-year-old J.Lo and 44-year-old Jordan Knight taking the stage and looking like they halted the aging process back in the late ’90s.

Nick or Clark? Clark or Nick? Who will be crowned our 14th and penultimate "American Idol" winner? And why must it take 126 minutes to find out? When "American Idol" was a colossus straddling the TV landscape, this sort of bloated spectacle wasn't just justified, it was practically necessary for Fox. Milk every blessed second out of "American Idol"! But Tuesday night's performance finale lost to "Undateable" in the 18-49 demo. That's a bit sad. But maybe ratings will still perk up for the actual finale. Follow along with me as we go on this lengthy journey to either Clark Beckham or Nick Fradiani's confetti-filled coronation... 8:00 p.m. Et. Nick and Clark are joining Fall Out Boy for a rousing show-opening rendition of "Centuries." Neither seems exactly sure whether or not they're the stars of this this particular performance. Wednesday (April 22) night's "American Idol" theme is Arena Anthems, which is relatively meaningless both because it's a relatively meaningless designation, but also because I'm not sure that "arenas" are in the future for this season's Top 6. And that's not me being bitter that the patently unfair "Idol" Save sent Joey Cook packing last week, because as much as I appreciated Joey's distinctiveness, this wasn't going to be a great theme for her either. But if Rayvon Owen is in the Bottom 2 again and he's saved by the "Idol" Save again, it'd be nice to get somebody from "Idol" to admit that they basically screwed up the entire season with this elimination twist. Let's see what's in store! 8:00 p.m. So they start tonight's show by reminding us about the Quentin Alexander unpleasantness from last week. I'd forgotten that was a thing. Presumably it will impact Quentin's voting results. Or maybe it won't?...

American Idol lost one of the most talented and unique singers of the season when we last tuned in to the show. Sure, "Wrecking Ball" the week before wasn't as original as we're used to from Joey Cook, but considering she went up against Rayvon Owen for the Twitter Save, it was obvious who should've stayed and who should have left.
Rayvon really is like Teflon at this point. He's been in the Bottom 2 every single week and survives each time. At some point, that luck will run out, but when? And when you look at who is left in the competition with him -- Tyanna Jones, Clark Beckham, Jax, Nick Fradiani and Quentin Alexander -- I can point out three singers who I would hate to see go home over Rayvon. The Voice‘s “Twitter Save” is a curious thing. It asks us to (possibly) veto the will of Monday-night voters in exchange for adding a heaping teaspoon of sriracha to the unflavored polenta that is a typical results-show telecast.
But riddle me this: What if NBC insisted you go to Myspace to rescue a member of the Bottom 3 from being sent to the guillotine? Or if you were forced to create a Vine (the absolute Worst) to make yourself heard? Would you go out to the nearest intersection and create a makeshift smoke signal in an effort to keep a particular singer in the mix?...

Tonight's elimination/performances show, kicked off with them revealing that it was an American Classics theme, and the contestants got to sing 2 songs. Tyanna Jones sang “Proud Mary” and “Why Do Fools Fall In Love.” Clark Beckham sang “Moon River” and “Superstition.” Jax sang “Beat It” and “Piece of My Heart.” Nick Fradiani performed “Only the Good Die Young” and “American Girl.” Quentin Alexander sang “Are You Gonna Go My Way” and “The Sound of Silence.” Joey Cook sang “Somebody to Love” and “My Funny Valentine.” Rayvon Owen belted out “Always On My Mind” and “The Doobie Brothers.” At this point, it had been revealed that everyone was safe except for poor Joey Cook and Rayvon Owen. Wednesday (April 15) night's "American Idol" theme is American Classics and America played some role in choosing the eligible songs and at some point, somehow, we'll find out who America put in the Bottom 2 and then America will get to go on Twitter and choose who we/they want to save. That's a lot of responsibility on you tonight, America. Good thing I only have to recap! Click through and follow along. 7:59 p.m. Et. Note to self: Clark Beckham is a person on "American Idol." Try to remember. 8:00 p.m. "Tonight we celebrate the songs you picked as American Classics," Ryan Seacrest says, underlining the confusion. And is Ryan already holding the results? Does that mean we've abandoned the envelope-presenters? That wasn't a good gimmick. But it wasn't a bad gimmick either... 8:01 p.m. Jennifer Lopez Fashion Show time! Yeah, there's no way she's touching anybody in the crowd tonight.

I’ve been recapping American Idol since Carrie Underwood was a humble farm girl who may or may not have been able to afford Almay — let alone be the face of its national advertising campaign.
And throughout that time, the show’s judging panel has been my go-to source for mockery, outrage and befuddlement — as well as an assortment of all-important conspiracy theories.

Odd "American Idol" Season 14 fact: Unless I'm missing something, every single remaining "American Idol" Finalist this season is from the Eastern or Central Time Zone. Daniel Seavey and Adanna Duru were the only two contestants from the West Coast and they're gone. Last week, the otherwise dismal Daniel got hosed by the "Idol" Twitter Save, in which his geographic core was disenfranchised if they happened not to be watching an online live feed. The "Idol" Twitter Save returns on Wednesday (April 8), but with all of the singers' hometowns watching the same feed, nobody can claim that they're being Seaveyed. And, once again, viewers from outside of the Et/Ct time zones have been cut out of the elimination process. Tonight's theme is Billboard Hits, so follow along and chime in with your own thoughts... 7:59 p.m. Et. Has anybody else lost all sense of how many people are still left on "Idol" this season?...

The post-Seavey era is officially underway on American Idol, with the Top 7 plus one set to hit the stage for arguably the broadest theme the series showcases -- The Billboard Top 100. It basically means that any song anyone has ever liked ever is fair game, so think iTunes download 1, Joey Cook's playlist 0.
The Twitter Filler Insta-Save remains in full effect, so it's possible the singer who received the fewest votes could be saved with a killer performance that he or she would also be judged on for next week's elimination.

Joey Cook has a lot to celebrate. Not only has the American Idol contestant quickly become a front-runner in the competition, but now she's also engaged! "He planned it perfectly," Cook tells People of her fiancé Evan Higgins' proposal, which she announced on Twitter March 26. "It was so beautiful. He did it at the hotel [all the contestants have been staying at] with my family there. I'm really close to my family and my mom has only come out to two shows so far. Evan took the time to plan it out so she would be here." Cook, 24, says Higgins, 25, also put a lot of thought into the engagement ring.

American Idol took it back to the beginning on Wednesday with the Top 9 performing the songs of season 1 winner - and this week's mentor - Kelly Clarkson. Some contestants stuck close to the original versions (as Nick Fradiani did with "Catch My Breath"), others gave Clarkson's hits an interesting twist (as newly engaged Joey Cook did with "Miss Independent"), but it was Clark Beckham, 22, who gave the performance of the evening. Once you’ve tasted Marcus Samuelsson’s cooking or watched Matt Damon pummel an enemy with his bare hands (on the big screen, of course), it’s hard to get excited about watching some up-and-comer try to pull off an imitation. And that was my worry going into Kelly Clarkson Night on American Idol.

The Kelly Clarkson Songbook. That's what we're getting on Wednesday (April 1) night's "American Idol." This is not to question Kelly Clarkson's awesomeness or even the very-goodness of Kelly Clarkson's discography, but there are some people in this "Idol" season who seem like they're going to be well-suited to tonight's theme and other people for home this may be excruciating, especially since the "Idol" voters are back in female-shunning mode this season. Let's see how things go... 8:00 p.m. Et. Greetings from Toronto, where I'm in town visiting the set of "The Strain." Because of timing, I may be pushing my "Survivor" recap to tomorrow morning. But "Idol"? On time! 8:03 p.m. J-Lo Fashion Show Time and she's wearing shorts and a largely concealing top. She still doesn't kneel to greet the crowd. Perhaps the shirt is too billowy. 8:04 p.m. Awwww. Young Kelly Clarkson. How adorable.

Knight Rider star David Hasselhoff is performing a partial striptease in the one country that’s embraced his pop-star aspirations as warmly as they’ve accepted sauerkraut and spätzle on their dinner tables. He’s shaking what his mama gave him and belting some of the decade’s biggest hits: “Walking on Sunshine.” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love.” “Let’s Dance.”

We're only two weeks into this season's "American Idol" Finals and The Save is gone. The "Idol" judges opted to Save Qaasim Middleton last week. Were they protecting the entertainment factor that Qaasim brings to the show? Were they rewarding Qaasim for bringing energy to an episode that had lacked energy? Were they recognizing that America's voting has, thus far, been wonky as heck this season? Either way, Wednesday's (March 25) episode of "American Idol" is going to be a double-elimination episode, meaning that there are 11 remaining contestants, but presumably only nine are going to sing. This will change the entire architecture of the episode. Plus, Fox is boasting an appearance by Salt and/or Peppa, following last week's big Kenny Loggins appearance. Whee! 8:01 p.m. I think Nick Fradiani should have been the '80s Night mentor, since I'm pretty sure he's the only contestant this season who existed way back then.
