QuarXX’s “This Thing Inside of Me,” Caye Casas’ “Malamuerte” and maybe the biggest buzz title in the whole selection, Sean Wainsteim’s “Idaho Winter,” a multi-media mashup, feature in a robust, variegated lineup at Sitges FanPitch, which is quickly establishing itself as a key early fall global genre project platform drawing on titles from not only Spain but Europe, Latin and North America and Asia.
Unspooling Oct. 6-7, the FanPitch ranks as one industry centrepiece at the Sitges, International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, a hallowed genre fest Mecca and one of the most important in Europe.
Projects range widely from multiple psychological thrillers, often driving deep into protagonists’ deep trauma, to black horror-comedy, stylish scarefests, near-future allegories, the allegedly true-event paranormal, and vampire actioners.
One title, “Idaho Winter,” is billed as “YA meta-fiction.” Another, fantastical series “The Lost Gods of Memphis,” surely the biggest budgeted of all projects at this year’s FanPitch,...

Locarno — Spain’s Vertigo Films has boarded “All the World Drops Dead,” committing to co-produce the next scarefest from Austrian Kevin Kopacka, director of 2021’s noteworthy “Dawn Breaks Behind the Eyes.”
Set up at Germany’s Manderley Films, which oversaw VFX on “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “All the World Drops Dead” has been brought to market at Locarno’s Match Me! Forum by producer and co-writer Lili Villlányi.
Also produced by Manderley Films’ founder Rebekka Garrido, “All the World Drops Dead” ranks as one of the biggest genre plays on offer at this year’s Swiss festival – not an idle boast as distributors worldwide turn to genre, as well as family animation, as a reaction to plunging cinema theater audiences for arthouse cinema through and after the pandemic.

Director Kevin Kopacka indulges the sensually rich if narratively flawed world of giallo and fantastique cinema, with enjoyable if problematic results
From the atmospheric lighting that drips in primary colours to the spooky setting of a gothic castle in ruins, the retro aesthetics of Kevin Kopacka’s second feature pay tribute to the twisted pleasures of 1960s and 1970s European horror movies: giallo, fantastique, and the like. Ruled by emotional as well as physical dysfunction, this film opens with an ill-fated car trip taken by an overbearing husband and his reticent wife to an abandoned country estate which the latter has inherited.
The dilapidated condition of the isolated location eerily mirrors the deteriorating mental states of the characters. Even if the plotting is intended as pastiche, the visuals maintain an impressive balance between homage and distinctiveness. Nevertheless, just when viewers might think they know what’s coming, the film suddenly...

Frederik von Lüttichau and Luisa Taraz in Dawn Breaks Behind The Eyes
In director Kevin Kopacka’s genre-bending and playful horror, Dawn Breaks Behind The Eyes, Margo (Luisa Taraz) and her ill-tempered husband Dieter (Frederik von Lüttichau) find themselves inspecting a castle in the middle of nowhere – as you do. Bequeathed to the wife, who is cursed with an ill-tempered husband, the pair find themselves trapped in its walls, seemingly for eternity. From there, Kopacka weaves together layers of storytelling, as he explores the dynamics of their relationship, and through them the conflict of masculinity and femininity.
In conversation with Eye For Film, Kopacka discussed his creative process, possibly departing filmmaking as an act of metamorphosis, and confronting a personal fear.

The gothic thriller Dawn Breaks Behind The Eyes is now available on digital platforms, courtesy of Dark Sky Films, and we have an exclusive clip just for Daily Dead readers, along with a quote from director Kevin Kopacka!
Synopsis: "Margo, who comes from a noble family, inherited a castle that she inspects with her ill-tempered husband Dieter. When they arrive at the run-down keep, their relationship is put to a test as their sanity slowly deteriorates. This opens up a new world. As time and space begin to shift around them, a reality that only exists within the walls of the eerie building is exposed - a reality full of warmth and excess.
Things aren't as they seem in this genre-bending film, that shifts between different story layers in unpredictable ways. It is a love letter to European cinema of the sixties and seventies that will leave viewers guessing what will happen next.

"Renovating this place will cost us a fortune." Dark Sky has revealed a trailer for Dawn Breaks Behind The Eyes, a horror thriller film from filmmaker Kevin Kopacka arriving on VOD this summer. This first premiered at Fright Fest in the UK last year. Here's the intro: "Coming on Gothic retro like an undiscovered Mario Bava S&m shocker before turning into a José Ramón Larraz acid trip, director Kevin Kopacka’s 70s exploitation homage is one from the Berberian Sound Studio. Having just inherited a run down castle, a melancholic woman and her bad tempered husband choose to spend the night before deciding what to do with the creaky, cobwebbed pile. But after horrendous mutilation, reality shifts and a Lovely Sort of Death fast approaches… Get ready to have your mind blown by a fantasy freak-out and an Acid Frog, Gandalf and Liquid Brain Orchestra soundtrack." Starring Anna Platen,...

MPI Media Group has added Kevin Kopacka’s German-language arthouse horror and Fright Fest 2021 premiere Dawn Breaks Behind The Eyes to its international sales slate for the virtual EFM.
The gothic homage to European mind-bending genre from the 1960s and 1970s stars Luisa Taraz and Frederik von Lüttichau as a married couple whose relationship and sanity are tested when they spend the night at a dilapidated castle where time and space become fluid.
Anna Platen, Robert Nickisch and Jeff Wilbusch round out the main cast. Kopacka co-wrote the screenplay with Lili Villanyi, who served as producer.

A couple arrive at a magnificent, albeit somewhat dilapidated, stately home in the middle of nowhere. It’s the woman to whom this has been bequeathed. The man makes a point of saying ‘we’ a lot, his attitude proprietary toward woman and house alike, his anger growing as she makes herself at ease. She has a sensual encounter with something barely glimpsed in a mirror. He’s afraid to explore the basement. Lost car keys necessitate an overnight stay. Have we seen this before? Most certainly, suggests filmmaker Kevin Kopacka, deftly pulling away the first of several elaborately woven rugs. Perhaps a better question is: did we learn anything from it? And how many times do we have to go through it again before we will?
A curious choice for Frightfest 2021, chosen perhaps because it requires an understanding of the visual language of several horror subgenres, Kopacka’s playful metacinematic endeavour is.

German horror prequel is even eerier than its predecessor. Last year, we reviewed writer/director Kevin Kopacka’s mesmerizing short German film Hades, the hallucinatory no-budget arthouse horror movie that saw a woman crossing the river Styx, in this case, a shithole apartment lit like the set of Suspiria, situated in the ether. Now, Kopacka has re-assembled…
