“She Wolf” director Tamae Garateguy, one of the most exciting talents on Latin America’s burgeoning genre scene, is set to direct “Fuckin’ Sexy,” a sex doll horror movie set up at Argentina’s Machaco Films, producer of Damien Rugna’s “Terrified” and “When Evil Lurks.”
A bold swing, which is what Garateguy’s fans love about her, “Fuckin’g Sexy” is set on the Argentina-Paraguay-Brazil triple frontier where laborer Juan stumbles on a life-size latex sex doll. It proves “a device of death” but, in a long journey through the jungle, Juan comes to recognises its “noble heart.”
“Fuckin’g Sexy” looks like one undisputed highlight of Blood Window Fant.Latina, a new section at Ventana Sur’s Blood Window dedicated to six new projects by female horror/fantastic film directors, taking in other highly respected established talents such as Argentina’s Jimena Monteoliva (“To Kill the the Dragon...

Last week the six projects participating in this year's Sanfic Morbido Lab, Sanfic’s genre/fantastic film showcase, were announced over at Variety. The showcase is in it's third year and takes place during Sanfic, Santiago Festival Internacional de Cine, during the third week of this month. Always of particular interest to us is the participation of our friends and family at Grupo Morbido, looking to further grow genre film in the LatAm region. As pointed out by the article, three of the six projects are set to be directed by female filmmakers; Argentina’s Laura Sánchez Acosta, Spain’s Marta Medina del Valle and French-Spanish screenwriter Elisa Puerto Aubel. Of personal interest is the participation of my friend, Laura Sanchez Acosta, who brings Caw to...

“History of the Occult” director Cristian Ponce, “The Trace We Leave Behind” producer André Pereira and “Huesera” producer Edher Campos all have projects at the 3rd Sanfic Morbido Lab, Sanfic’s genre/fantastic film showcase which looks packed with riches.
Also noticeable, three of the six projects are set to be directed by female genre auteurs – Argentina’s Laura Sánchez Acosta, Spain’s Marta Medina del Valle and French-Spanish screenwriter Elisa Puerto Aubel – as women create an ever larger number of the most exciting elevated genre movies coming out of Spain and Latin America.
Appropriately enough, given Sanfic takes place in Santiago de Chile, Chile accounts for two projects at the Lab, Daniel Aspillaga’s “Plasma,” a part body horror mockumentary, and Cristián Grez Donoso’s “Magic Word,” turning on an aged and crazed former amusement park actor.
The potential impact of projects is underscored by recent events. On “A Mother’s Embrace,...

As the next Brooklyn Horror Film Festival draws near it is time once again to drop another wave of genre and horror goodness upon us. Of particular interest is the Canadian Indigenous Zombie flick Blood Quantum from Jeff Barnaby, Joe Begos' new horror Vfw and Carlo Mirabella-Davis' Swallow, which has been winning raves all along the circuit. In the short film program I'm going to play favorites here and point out that our own Izzy Lee's The Obliteration of Chickens will play at the fest. Also, my friend Laura Sanchez Acosta's Caw (Spanish title La Solapa) will play at the fest after winning the Blood Window Award at the Panama Horror Film Festival. All the feature and short flims are featured in the gallery...

Argentine director Laura Sanchez Acosta is set to premier her new short film La Solapa over in Brussels during Bifff. The director of Relicto A Mesopotamic Story, Sanchez Acosta made her film after she won the short film prize at Blood Window in 2017. La Solapa will return and have its Latin American premiere at Blood Window Pinamar this month as well. During a hot summer afternoon at their grandmother’s county house in Entre Ríos, Malena terrifies her little brother Santiago with a local myth in which kids are watched by pigeons and captured by a horrendous monster if they don’t take a nap. Deathly bored and despite of Santiago’s request to stay inside, Malena goes to look for internet with her cellphone...

Oscar and Tamara leave the big city to settle into a small home in the country. It is an attempt by Oscar to rebuild their broken relationship after the death of his wife and her mother. Not long after they have moved in Tamara’s behavior becomes erratic and snappy. She often disappears into the nearby woods and begins talking of a local legend called Xuthej. Dismissing her behavior as a result of their already strained relationship Oscar grows steadily frustrated as his attempts at resolution are met with further indifference and eventually hostility. Is Tamara acting out her wild imagination, or is something in the woods coming for them? To understand Relicto is to understand how it came about. Argentine filmmaker Laura Sanchez Acosta’s...

One of the takeaways from my trip to Morbido at the end of October was a sense that there is a burgeoning genre film community on the rise in Argentina. With films like What the Waters Left Behind from the Onetti brothers, Clementina from Jimena Monteoliva, Aterrados from Demian Rugna and Relicto from Laura Sanchez Acosta the country shows great promise as a key contributor to LatAm genre cinema in the years to come. Filmmakers Ezequiel Endelman and Leandro Montejano from Buenos Aires are looking to add their names to that cadre with their Argentinian Giallo flick Crystal Eyes (Mirada de Cristal). They graciously passed along the trailer for their film, along with a collection of bill cards as well. Buenos Aires,...

Cavitycolors pays tribute to Maniac Cop 2 with a new shirts and pins collection, and in today's Horror Highlights, we also have details on Aliens Ate My Homework, What the Waters Left Behind, and The Tormenting.
Maniac Cop 2 Shirts and Pins Collection: From Cavitycolors: "Hey Fiends!
This Thursday, we're bringing you our officially licensed Maniac Cop 2 collection!
Written by Larry Cohen (The Stuff) and directed by William Lustig (Maniac), Part 2 of the series is my personal favorite entry in the series. A 90's cult classic in the truest sense, it's just so satisfying to see a much more monstrous Matt Cordell wreak havoc on the streets of New York City. We couldn't be more excited to work with top notch artists on this release, including Devon Whitehead, Jason Edmiston, Shane Murphy, and Matt Skiff. All art is officially licensed, and approved by William Lustig himself for what might...
