Park Chan-wook's revenge thriller "Oldboy" celebrated its 20th anniversary this year. In commemoration, the film was remastered and theatrically distributed this past August by Neon. If you missed this beautiful restoration in theaters, fear not: Neon has announced it is releasing a limited edition 4K Blu-ray of "Oldboy," scheduled for release on December 12, 2023.
"Oldboy" is based on a manga by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi. The film adaptation transposes the setting from Japan to South Korea, but retains the core premise. Boorish businessman Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik) is abducted and held in a locked room for 15 years. Freed one day out of the blue, Oh Dae-su makes it his mission to find out who imprisoned him -- and why. But by the end of his journey, he wishes that he'd stayed locked up.
Co-written by Park, Hwang Jo-yun, and Lim Jun-hyung, "Oldboy" is the second chapter of the director's...

You Hurt My Feelings. At a Friday-night showing of Nicole Holofcener’s latest film You Hurt My Feelings (2023), I noticed several people who had come with their moms. Holofcener makes great films to watch with your mom, if her definition of a great film is something that will make her laugh but won't treat her like an idiot. Holofcener’s stories are smart, funny and heartwarming, a little bit sad in the right places, sophisticated but palatable. Invariably, a great actress plays the lead—Catherine Keener, for the most part, though Julia Louis-Dreyfus stars both in Enough Said (2013) and You Hurt My Feelings. In the film, Beth (Louis-Dreyfus), a writer, overhears Don (Tobias Menzies) telling her brother-in-law that he doesn't like her latest novel. It hurts her feelings. She dry retches on the sidewalk, sobs to her sister, and swears she will never look at her husband the same way again.

Linda Evangelista shared that she has been privately battling breast cancer for the past five years. The Nineties supermodel opened up about her experience for the first time during an interview published Tuesday with the Wall Street Journal.
Evangelista said that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2018 after it was detected in her annual mammogram. “The margins were not good, and due to other health factors, without hesitation, because I wanted to put everything behind me and not to have to deal with this, I opted for a bilateral mastectomy.

Early viewers of “Avatar: The Way of Water” are just about unanimous in their emphatic praise of the James Cameron epic.
The film, which debuts in theaters this Friday, is already being lauded as one of the best films of the year and a vast improvement to its 2009 predecessor.
“Avatar: The Way of Water is miles better than the first,” said writer Eric Vespe in a tweet. “The ocean environment is incredible and Cameron clearly is wearing his environmentalist heart on his sleeve here. I connected to this one in a way I couldn’t with the original.”

The first press reactions to Avatar: The Way of Water are in, and the response is largely gushing.
The long-long awaited sequel to director James Cameron’s fantasy epic is being called better than the 2009 original in both its story and its cutting-edge visual effects.
While some chided Cameron for the film’s length (it is more than three hours) or took issue with its myriad of characters and storylines, most seemed impressed — even overwhelmed — by the film’s underwater visuals.
Here is a sample of reactions now that the film’s social media embargo has lifted for journalists who saw screenings of the film, as well as from those attending Tuesday’s London premiere (full critic reviews will be posted Dec. 13):

Maybe Netflix saved the best of its festival debuts for last. After receiving mixed responses to “Bardo” and “White Noise” at Venice, the streamer was blessed with some of the most effusive reactions of the year so far for “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.” The Rian Johnson mystery-comedy debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday night.
“Yes, ‘Glass Onion’ is as good as ‘Knives Out,’ if not better – another very funny, supremely well-written murder-mystery w/ twists & turns galore. I could watch Daniel Craig play Benoit Blanc forever. Also Big shout out to Janelle Monáe, the film’s all-star without a doubt,” Fandango’s Erik Davis wrote.
“‘Glass Onion’ is even better than the original ‘Knives Out.’ Can [Rian Johnson] slow down and give everyone else a chance??!” wrote Vanity Fair’s Michael Hogan.

Jordan Peele’s Nope is a UFO story where characters aren’t concerned with killing an alien so much as capturing it on camera. In that regard, it’s an extraterrestrial thriller that feels very much in sync with our zeitgeist, one whose chief preoccupation revolves around our struggles to process singular, horrific happenings in an age when they are so swiftly commodified into something sellable, scrollable, and endlessly watchable. Daniel Kaluuya plays Oj Haywood, Keke Palmer his sister Emerald. They’re the descendants of the Black jockey immortalized in Eadweard Muybridge’s The Horse in Motion (1878), a man whose name (unlike the horse’s and its owner’s) has long been erased from history. The Haywood siblings own a ranch in Agua Dulce, where they train horses for film appearances. But business is drying up, and a neighbor—former child star Ricky “Jupe” Park (Steven Yeun)—wants to buy them out.
