The Busan International Film Festival has hired Pak Dosin, a former senior festival programmer, as co-deputy director. In a dual-leadership structure, Pak will act as festival director alongside co-deputy director Kang Seung-ah. Today the festival also announced that it has postponed the appointment of its next director. This year, the event will be conducted under the leadership of chairperson Park Kwang-su, Acfm director Ellen Y. D. Kim, and co-deputy directors Seung-ah and Dosin. The festival said the decision was made to “allocate resources effectively by reducing the administrative processes and time needed to elect the festival director.” This comes after a tumultuous 2023 for the festival, which saw four managers resign. The 29th Busan International Film Festival will run October 2-11.

Hernan Lopez, the former 21st Century Fox executive who launched podcasting giant Wondery in 2016, has set up consulting firm Owl & Co. aimed at delivering data and analysis designed to help media and entertainment businesses manage the transition to the streaming era.
Lopez has put early emphasis on a deep-dive study of the streaming content marketplace, using available viewership and spending data to crunch the Roi numbers based on the cost of TV series and movies. After a decade of Peak TV production activity, scrutiny of such expenditures is increasing in Hollywood’s C-suites. A giant in the world of podcasting needs a “sonic signature.”
So when the prolific publisher Wondery decided it was time to brand its product by establishing an unforgettable signature, its leaders hired the creative-design firm, Made Music, behind the iconic static-screen clip that opens every HBO show. Wondery CEO Jen Sargent recalls that the branding exercise in 2018 helped the company fine-tune its vision of what Wondery podcasts should deliver to listeners.
“Imagine six or seven of us sitting in a room and asking ourselves, ‘Does this sound like wonder to you? Does this sound like wondering?’” recalls Sargent.
The efforts proved to be time well spent. Since Wondery’s launch in early 2016, podcasting as a medium has seen its listener base skyrocket. Wondery has blossomed into one of the largest producers of popular, recurring podcast series including “SmartLess,” a freewheeling conversation hosted by actors Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett.

A federal judge threw out the conviction of Hernan Lopez, former head of Fox International Channels, who had been found guilty of bribing FIFA soccer officials in exchange for a broadcasting-rights deal.
“We are obviously pleased with Judge Chen’s thorough and correct decision,” David Sarratt, a lawyer for Lopez, said in a statement to the AP. “We have never stopped believing in our client’s innocence.”
Lopez, who after leaving Fox founded podcast network Wondery, was convicted in March 2023 by a jury on charges that he participated in a scheme to bribe South American soccer officials in order to secure exclusive broadcasting rights for 21st Century Fox. In addition, sports marketing company Full Play Group was found guilty for its part in the alleged scheme.
In a Sept. 1 ruling, U.S. District Judge Pamela Chen granted Lopez’s motion for acquittal and also overturned the conviction of Full Play.

A New York federal judge tossed a conviction of former 21st Century Fox executive and Wondery podcast startup founder Hernan Lopez on Friday night. Lopez was convicted earlier this year of bribing FIFA soccer officials with millions of dollars in exchange for lucrative media and marketing rights to international tournaments and events, including the World Cup.
Lopez was charged alongside Carlos Martinez, another Fox executive, with wire fraud and money laundering and was accused of using shell companies and sham consulting contracts to conceal or disguise bribes and kickback payments. Prosecutors had said that the bribes helped them obtain confidential bidding information, as well as bringing the U.S. broadcasting rights to Fox for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup competitions.
Martinez was acquitted at trial, but Lopez was convicted in March.

Hernan Lopez, former head of Fox International Channels and founder of podcast startup Wondery, was convicted on charges that he participated in a scheme to bribe South American soccer officials in order to secure exclusive broadcasting rights for 21st Century Fox. An attorney representing Lopez said he plans to appeal the decision.
In April 2020, federal prosecutors indicted Lopez along with another former 21st Century Fox executive, Carlos Martinez, alleging they were part of a conspiracy to pay millions of dollars annually to FIFA officials in South America between 2000-15 in exchange for broadcasting rights to the Copa Libertadores club tournament as well as confidential bidding information for U.S. broadcast rights to the 2018 and 2022 World Cup tournaments.
On Thursday, a Brooklyn jury convicted Lopez on the charges while Martinez was acquitted, Reuters reported. The jury also convicted Uruguayan sports marketing company Full Play Group for its part in the alleged scheme.

FX Boss John Landgraf said today at the network’s TCA day that Ryan Murphy’s American Story spinoff American Sports Story is “heading toward production.”
“We have a fairly complete set of scripts for American Sports Story by Stu Zicherman,” said Landgraf, “We haven’t dated that.”
Announced back in August 2021, along with another spinoff series American Love Story, American Sports Story is a scripted anthological limited series focusing on a prominent event involving a sports figure and re-examines it through the prism of today’s world, telling that story from multiple perspectives.
The first installment is based on the podcast Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc from the Boston Globe and Wondery. The limited series charts the rise and fall of NFL superstar Aaron Hernandez and explores the connections of the disparate strands of his identity, his family, his career, his suicide, and their legacy in sports and American culture.

Few true stories are as harrowing, grisly, or baffling as the ones presented on Wondery's "Dr. Death" podcast. The hit series investigates the stories of fraudulent, overconfident, often manipulative medical professionals who seem to purposely and pathologically put their patients' lives at risk. The first season, about spine-maiming Dr. Christopher Duntsch, who's now serving life in prison, captured listeners' attention when it debuted in 2018 and went on to inspire the Peacock series of the same name.
But the other seasons of "Dr. Death" are just as disturbing, and now, the Critics Choice-nominated drama series is set to return as an anthology. The second season will tell another story fans of the Wondery podcast will be familiar with: that of Dr. Paolo Macchiarini. Here's everything we know so far about the second installment of the series about horrendous medical malpractice.

Apple TV Plus has launched the first trailer for “WeCrashed,” a new drama limited series starring Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway.
Based on the podcast “WeCrashed: The Rise and Fall of WeWork” by Wondery, “WeCrashed” tells the story of WeWork, a commercial real estate company that provides shared workspaces for technology startups. The show focuses on the rise and fall of Adam Neumann, the Israeli businessman who founded the company and stepped down in 2019 as its value plummeted.
The trailer shows Neumann starting the company with his wife Rebekah (Anne Hathaway) and developing it into a global brand. Tensions rise between the two, however, as Rebekah increasingly feels like her contributions to the company are diminished by her husband and the public at large.
“I have a responsibility to think bigger,” Leto’s Adam says in the trailer. “I’m a golden goose laying golden eggs.”

Based on the hit Wondery podcast “WeCrashed: The Rise and Fall of WeWork” from Lee Eisenberg and Drew Crevello — who also serve as co-writers, executive producers, and co-showrunners — the AppleTV+ series also Kyle Marvin, America Ferrera, and O-t Fagbenle. “WeCrashed” is directed by John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, who also...

Exclusive: Deadline has the first exclusive track from Joshua Moshier’s score for The Shrink Next Door, which is set for digital release via Lakeshore Records on November 12, as the first three episodes of the limited series become available for streaming on Apple TV+.
The eight-episode dark comedy based on the original Wondery podcast of the same name is inspired by true events. It examines the bizarre dynamic that unfolds between soft-spoken New Yorker Martin “Marty” Markowitz (Will Ferrell) and Dr. Isaac “Ike” Herschkopf (Paul Rudd), the psychiatrist who manipulates and exploits him for nearly three decades. Dr. Ike is joined in infiltrating Marty’s life by his unsuspecting wife Bonnie (Casey Wilson), and though Marty may be blind to the shrink’s abuses, his hard-headed sister Phyllis (Kathryn Hahn) is not. Emmy, Golden Globe, BAFTA, and WGA Award winner Georgia Pritchett (Succession) wrote the scripts for the series, which...
