The Capitol Music Group held its fifth annual Capitol Congress at the Arclight Theater in Hollywood on Wednesday, highlighted by a daylong session of product presentations, panels, musical performances and a live podcast featuring Paul McCartney and “Wtf” host and “Glow” star Marc Maron. The summit was capped off with a party on the back lot of the Capitol Tower complete with requisite food trucks, open bars, DJs and plenty of industry schmooze.
Capitol Music Group Chairman/CEO Steve Barnett greeted the crowd, before introducing Umg Chairman/CEO Lucian Grainge, who marveled at the label’s growth since being acquired by Universal in 2011 as part of its purchase of Emi. There’s a theory dubbed “nominative determinism,” a fancy name to describe people who gravitate to jobs that fit their names. You could hardly find a better example than the man who has sat alongside a mixing console and vinyl lathe in one of the basement studios in the Capitol Records tower for more than three decades.
“What better name for a mastering engineer than… Ron McMaster!” says Ben Blackwell, the co-founder of Third Man Records, who has worked with the veteran on several projects. “Look up his credit on the Demolition Doll Rods’ first album — it’s my favorite listing on a record ever.” A quick scan of the credits reveals the listing burned into Blackwell’s memory: “Masterfully Mastered by the Master at Tower Mastering — Ron McMaster.”

Universal Music Enterprises (UMe), the global catalog division of Universal Music Group, today announced that Stephen Bolles has been appointed Vice President, Film & TV Music. Bolles will be based in New York and will report to Tom Rowland, Evp Film & TV Music.
According to a press release, in this newly created role, Bolles will be responsible for marketing Universal Music Group repertoire to East Coast film and television clients and ad agencies. He will work closely with the UMe and Umg frontline label marketing, product development and brand partnership teams, to create timely sync opportunities around priority artist and catalog releases.
In making the announcement, Rowland said, “With Stephen’s presence in New York, we are able to work more closely with our agency and production partners to deliver precise musical direction throughout their creative process, with the ability to quickly respond to shifting directives as they may evolve.
