Laurence Chapman(I)
- Music Department
- Composer
Laurence was born in Cambridge in 1985; growing up in a music-filled household he began composing after hearing the film scores of Jerry Goldsmith.
At Southampton University, he studied with the Head of Music at the National Theatre Matthew Scott and the highly versatile composer Andrew Fisher both of whom instilled in him a disciplined approach to compositional technique and orchestration. Whilst at Southampton, Laurence wrote the score to a Nuffield Theatre production of Spring Awakening using 60s pop songs manipulated in ways to reflect the eerie setting of the production.
In 2013, Laurence worked as a Music Assistant to BAFTA Nominated Andy Price on Law & Order UK - an experience which allowed him to develop his skills as a composer and write to picture at a highly advanced standard. He has continued to work with Andy on the CBBC adaptation of Hetty Feather - a second series is due out in 2016.
In 2014, he completed a score to the short film Smog as well as Inkle Studios' multi-award winning game 80 Days. Following the success of his music to Sorcery! 3, Laurence was invited to provide music not just for the concluding chapter in the series, but a replacement theme for Sorcery! 2. Recording sessions for the series took place in November 2015 and will be released in early 2016.
He lists his main musical influences as, Bach, Beethoven, Shostakovich, Brahms, Mahler, Elgar, Stravinsky, Walton, Jerry Goldsmith, John Powell, Alexandre Desplat, and more recently, James Macmillan, Peter Maxwell-Davies, and Oliver Knussen.
