After the huge success of "Stranger Things," it's no surprise Netflix would want to stay in business with the Duffer Brothers. And as that show heads toward its highly anticipated conclusion, the duo is revving up future projects for the streamer.
When Netflix signed Matt and Ross Duffer to a nine-figure deal last year, one of the projects they were attached to was a mysterious science fiction series from creators Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, the guys behind Netflix's beloved, canceled-too-soon fantasy epic "The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance." Today, we finally have more information about that project.
The eight-episode series is called "The Boroughs," and it sounds like it could be tonally similar to "Stranger Things" despite having a completely different setting and group of characters. Here's the official logline:
In a seemingly picturesque retirement community in the New Mexico desert, a group of unlikely heroes must band together...

Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer are ramping up their next acts at Netflix.
Ten days after announcing an animated series set within the Stranger Things universe, the Duffer brothers have scored a series order for The Boroughs, a sci-fi drama from The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance duo Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews.
The project, which was first announced last July as part of their nine-figure overall deal with the streamer, is based on an original idea from Addiss and Matthews. “Stranger Things” is the gift that will keep on giving. Not only has the current fourth season reportedly broken viewership records for Netflix, it’s also about to expand with new projects that the Duffer Brothers are creating through their new Upside Down Pictures production company. Are you excited for things to get even “Stranger”?
Perhaps the most interesting news from the announcement is a stage play “set within the world and mythology of ‘Stranger Things'” to be produced by Sonia Friedman, Stephen Daldry (who will also direct), and Netflix. I’m eager to see how a visual effects extravaganza like “Stranger Things” will translate to the theater — though it worked out just fine for “Harry Potter.” We’re also getting a live-action “Stranger Things” spinoff “based on an original idea by The Duffer Brothers.”

The Duffer Brothers are getting ready to turn Netflix upside down.
After engineering another smash-hit season of Stranger Things, the fraternal showrunners have announced Upside Down Pictures, a production company that already has at least five different projects in development. The new studio is a partnership between The Duffer Brothers and Hilary Leavitt, who is perhaps best known for producing the award-winning BBC America series Orphan Black.
Unsurprisingly, two of the Upside Down projects revealed thus far are set in the Stranger Things universe. The Duffer Brothers will work with Tony winner Stephen Daldry to create a stage play inspired by the show that made them famous. They are also planning a live-action Stranger Things spinoff, which is purportedly based on an original idea.

Who needs rest? Not the Duffer Brothers, that's for sure. The duo only just finished post-production on "Stranger Things" season 4 and are about to start working on the show's fifth and final season. In the meantime, they're launching their own production shingle in the form of Upside Down Pictures, taking its name from the creepy, blue-lit alternate dimension in their mega-popular Netflix series. Overseeing this operation is Hilary Leavitt, an executive who has helped develop such hit shows as "Orphan Black" and "Ozark" in the past. Most recently, she worked on Hulu's "The Great" and the Apple TV+ series "Shining Girls."

Fresh off the enormous success of Stranger Things Season 4, which has crossed one billion hours viewed on Netflix, the Duffer Brothers are lining up multiple projects.
Matt and Ross Duffer, who have a joint overall deal with Netflix, have formed the production company Upside Down Pictures, Deadline reports.
News of the production arm also comes with confirmation that a Stranger Things spinoff is officially in the works.
Such a project has been teased in the past, but this is the first official word we're getting.
The Duffer brothers have been vocal about making the project something very different from the beloved Netflix hit, so we should probably expect a new location and characters.
Other projects in the works as part of their overall deal include a stage play set in the Stranger Things universe, a series adaptation of Stephen King and Peter Straub's The Talisman, and a live-action iteration of Death Note.

Hot on the heels of the record-breaking conclusion of the fourth season of Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” creators Matt and Ross Duffer have formed a new shingle called Upside Down Pictures, recommitting to their current streaming home.
The ambitious inaugural slate for Upside Down Pictures includes a live-action spin-off of the flagship series created and developed by the Duffers; a Curtis Gwinn–led adaptation of Stephen King and Peter Straub’s “The Talisman,” which the brothers will produce alongside their hero Steven Spielberg; a British stage play set within the world of “Stranger Things” from director and producer Stephen Daldry (and co-produced by prolific U.K.-based stage producer Sonia Friedman); and a new adaptation of Japanese manga/anime “Death Note” (previously adapted by Netflix into the 2017 Adam Wingard live-action movie). All of this on top of having to finish “Stranger Things” with its upcoming fifth (and final) season.
