The Billboard Music Awards telecast positioned itself this year as the official awards show of forgiveness for so-called “canceled” stars, with performance slots offered to both Morgan Wallen and Travis Scott. Less than a month away from its airdate, CMA Awards producers have put an end to the speculation among country fans about who would host the 2021 show by announcing Luke Bryan would take over duties for the show, to be broadcast live Nov. 10 on ABC.
This marks the third year in a row that the network and the Country Music Association have changed up the hosting approach, after Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood had an 11-year run, from 2008 to 2018. Two years ago, Underwood returned to co-host with Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton, and last year McEntire came back to share the stage with Darius Rucker. Earlier this month. McEntire told Billboard she was not coming back “to my knowledge.”
For the CMA and ABC, putting Bryan in the role is a virtually no-risk gambit, as the singer not only remains one of the most reliable ticket-sellers in the industry but...

It’ll be a New Year’s Countrified Eve on CBS this Dec. 31, as the network has just announced plans to fill the evening with no less than five hours of live country music performances from Nashville, now being plotted by a new production company put together by “CMA Awards” executive producer Robert Deaton and country artist manager Mary Hilliard Harrington.
Titled “New Year’s Eve: Nashville’s Big Bash,” the show will air from 8-11 p.m. Et, then resume after a half-hour local news break for two more hours, from 11:30-1:30 p.m. — a wholly ambitious night of nearly nonstop programming, into the wee hours, from a network that hadn’t tried to be competitive on that night for years.
“I think we’re at 50 performances now,” in the planning stages, Harrington tells Variety. So in other words, the initial artist lineup being rolled out in...

CBS is throwing their hat into the New Year’s Eve concert special ring after two decades on the sidelines with New Year’s Eve Live: Nashville’s Big Bash headlined by some of country’s biggest stars. The Weeknd will perform at the Billboard Music Awards on May 23 — which is only fitting since he’s the top finalist this year with nominations in 16 categories, riding the success of his blockbuster “After Hours” album and its smash single “Blinding Lights,” which has crushed multiple streaming and chart records.
Over the course of his decade-long career, the Weeknd has racked up a dazzling number of Billboard chart records: He’s had 34 top 40-charting hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including six No. 1s, three of which came from “After Hours”: “Heartless,” “Blinding Lights” and his recent duet with Ariana Grande, “Save Your Tears,” which hit No. 1 more than a year after the album was released. “Blinding Lights” spent a record-breaking 57 weeks in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100.
He’s also had four No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 chart, including “After Hours,” which is the first album with three Billboard Hot 100 No.

For the last nine months, television awards shows have been busy trying to reinvent wheels when it comes to novel ways of presenting a telecast without reaction shots. That’s why Wednesday night’s CMA Awards felt like the novelty of the year so far in the awards space, just by virtue of having something resembling a traditional live audience. It wasn’t the usual arena crowd: The 15,000 or so people who would usually be packed into Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena for the show were replaced by fewer than 100 people, all of them performers or presenters on the show and their guests. But it did feel, on the surface, like a return to kudo-cast normalcy — even if the offstage drama that transpired, with five performers dropping out after they or someone in their circle tested positive for Covid-19, was anything but normal.

Award shows in the age of the Covid-19 pandemic have certainly faced challenges, yet in the past few months, mostly virtual events like the BET Awards, the Emmys, and the VMAs have proven that the show must and can go on, with the right protocols and adjustments in place. But despite an award season full of safe models to follow, Wednesday night's CMA Awards and its attendees displayed a disappointing lack of concern for the pandemic.
Just two weeks before one of country music's biggest nights of the year, the Country Music Association announced the CMAs would take place in person (with a few pre-recorded segments weaved in) and indoors at the Music City Center in Nashville. Prior to the awards, a longtime producer of the show, Robert Deaton, maintained that attendees would be distanced at eight feet apart and seated with just one artist and guest per table. And...

The Associated Press is refusing to cover tonight’s Country Music Association Awards after a dispute with the association over photo access, the wire service said Wednesday.
After first refusing AP photographers access to the in-person Nashville ceremony, which will be broadcast on ABC, the CMA has also barred the AP from using screenshots of the event that feature the faces of guests seated in the audience.
No tickets were sold for the event, which is being held at Nashville’s Music City Center, but nominees, performers and their guests will be present in-person. CMA Awards executive producer Robert Deaton has promised a “fully safe and physically distant environment.”
In a statement, the AP’s entertainment editor Anthony McCartney said the photo restrictions would prevent the AP from adequately covering the event.

The “In Memoriam” factor will be high on next week’s CMA Awards telecast, as an all-star opening tribute to Charlie Daniels will be followed during the ABC telecast by individual performers’ salutes to the late Kenny Rogers and Joe Diffie. All three of these tributees died this year.
The homages to country music’s dearly departed were announced Thursday as part of a talent rollout for the show that also includes Justin Bieber joining Dan + Shay for the first live performance of their joint hit from earlier this year, “10,000 Hours.”
The tribute to Daniels at the top of the show will include Dierks Bentley and Brothers Osborne (pictured above), Jason Aldean, Ashley McBryde and Jenee Fleenor (already announced as the musician of the year winner) performing a medley of some of the singer-fiddler’s hits.

Reba McEntire will repeat her co-hosting duties from last year’s Country Music Association Awards when the show returns to ABC Nov. 11, while Darius Rucker (of solo and Hootie & the Blowfish fame) has signed on as a host for the first time.

McEntire will be presiding over the CMA Awards for the fifth time in 2020. But historically she’s been even more associated with the Academy of Country Music Awards, a telecast that takes place (in non-pandemic years) in the spring. That show, she’s hosted 16 times. Some use the dawn of a new year to declare what they will be doing in the next 12 months, but Carrie Underwood has used this turn of the odometer to announce what she won’t. The singer took to social media Monday to tell fans that she won’t return as a co-host of the Cma Awards next November, after a successful 12-year run that began in 2008.
“It’s hard to imagine topping what we have accomplished together,” Underwood wrote on her Instagram account, “so I’ve decided that it’s time to pass the hosting torch (at least for now!) to others that will cherish it and honor it as much as I do. I’ve got so many exciting things coming in the new year and beyond, and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for all of us.”

When it comes to the exact drop away mechanics of how Reba McEntire pulled off multiple costume changes on camera at this year’s Cma Awards, only her dresser knows for sure. But longtime executive producer Robert Deaton can at least tell us approximately how many dozen rehearsals went into that performance of “Fancy.” And when it comes to other highlights of the 2019 show, from Kacey Musgraves’ tender duet with WIllie Nelson to Halsey’s hookup with Lady Antebellum, Deaton can also reveal which ideas were his and which he resisted before the star in question successfully sold him on it.
As Variety approached him with these and other burning questions about the telecast, Deaton was in a celebratory mood. The Cma Awards have had the most consistent hosting situation of any music awards show in television, but 11 years after installing Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood as the reliable faces of the telecast, even ABC and the Country Music Association have decided it’s time for a switch. Come Nov. 13, Underwood will return for year 12, but Paisley is exiting, to be replaced in 2019 by the combination of Dolly Parton and Reba McEntire as “special guest hosts” alongside Underwood.
The move is surprising not least of all because McEntire has been a longtime on-again, off-again host of the rival Academy of Country Music Awards, going back to 1986. McEntire most recently hosted the ACMs out of Las Vegas this past April, for the second year in a row — a role she presumably won’t be stepping back into in 2020, unless the CMAs and ACMs are much more into sharing than previously imagined.

The Country Music Association made the announcement today. The awards show broadcasts live from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 8-11 pm Et on ABC.
“It’s an incredible honor to welcome Carrie, Reba and Dolly to the Cma Awards stage this year,” says Sarah Trahern, Cma chief executive officer. “In addition to awarding the year’s best and brightest in the genre, The 53rd Annual Cma Awards will celebrate the legacy of women within Country Music, and we couldn’t think of a more dynamic group of women to host the show.”
Combined, Underwood (who has co-hosted since 2008), Parton and McEntire have scored 124 Cma Awards nominations and 22 total wins over the years, 11 of the wins for Female Vocalist of the Year.

“I had so much fun hosting the Billboard Music Awards last year that I’m back for more,” Clarkson said in a statement. “We’re turning it up a notch this year, and I can’t wait to celebrate all of my fellow amazing artists for another unforgettable night of live music.”
Clarkson is a three-time Grammy winner who has racked up 11 top 10 singles and three No. 1s since her 2002 debut. All eight of her studio albums have reached the Top 3 in the U.S., including three chart-toppers. Her most recent album, 2017’s Meaning of Life,...

"Whatever that was, it wudn't baseball!" Gravitas Ventures has released the first official trailer for an indie comedy titled Benched, formerly known as Rounding Third while in production. This awkward, amusing comedy is about two little league baseball coach dads assigned to the same team who have to figure out how to work together, and train their team to win. This is one of those uplifting, feel-good, cheerful indie films about how enemies can become friends if you just learn to work together. John C. McGinley and Garret Dillahunt star, along with Jlynn Johnson, Graham Schneider, Keith Jamal Evans, Brogan Hall, Carter Wallace, Brennon Olsen, Brayden Chunn, Drake Light, and Caleb Coffey. This looks about as cheesy and as charming as you're expecting, but maybe this is just what a few of us really need right now. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Robert Deaton & George Flanigen's Benched, from...

Just in case anyone was still prone at this late stage to confusing Khalid with DJ Khaled, the 2018 Billboard Music Awards telecast came along to make sure that never, ever happens again — directly juxtaposing performances by the two stars that alternately represented pop’s noblest and most ignoble impulses.
Deep into a show that had already acknowledged Friday’s mass killings in Texas, Khalid and Shawn Mendes were joined on the latter’s new song, “Youth,” by the show choir from Marjory Stoneman High School in Parkland, Texas. Khalid wore a shirt bearing the legend “Protect Our Guns,” with the last word crossed out and replaced by “Children,” making explicit a sentiment that had been hinted at by host Kelly Clarkson at the top of the show. “This soul of mine will never break / As long as I wake up today / You can’t take my youth away,” sang Mendes,...
