American Gods star Yetide Badaki, known to fans of the show as love goddess Bilquis, has an upbringing as unique as any fictional character from Neil Gaiman’s fantasy novel.
She lived in England for three years, has lived in American since age 12, and went to college in Canada, but Badaki’s roots are planted in the soil of the country of her birth, Nigeria. Nigeria, Africa’s largest country, serves as the centerpiece of the larger tribal community known as Yorubaland along with Benin, Ghana, and Togo. Yorubaland is home to 55 million people and was one of the largest sources of the enslaved people to the United States of America. It’s also home to spirit world entities which are now about to enter into the American Gods’ canon: The Orisha.

Being “nice” can sometimes be a backhanded compliment. A romantic film, one seeking to warm an audience’s heart, usually doesn’t have too much of an edge. There’s nothing wrong with being “nice,” especially when the material calls for it. However, when you wind up with something that’s only “nice” and doesn’t offer up anything else, it leaves you lacking. The Lost Husband is a prime example of this. Sure, it’s pleasant and has its heart in the right place, but that doesn’t mean that the end result isn’t bland and without narrative thrust. On Demand this weekend, it’s a harmless offering that nonetheless leaves you wanting more. This flick is a romance, introducing us to Libby (Leslie Bibb) a short time after the sudden death of her husband. Unhappy in her current situation, stuck living with her mother, Libby is offered...

There’s plenty of drama to be found in “The Lost Husband,” Vicky Wight’s adaptation of Katherine Center’s 2013 novel of the same name, much of it baked right into its intriguing title and the odd misdirection that comes from it. Yes, Libby Moran (Leslie Bibb) has lost her husband, but that’s hardly what this story is about; really, it’s about Libby finding herself after a horrible tragedy that took nearly everything from her. If that sounds like the makings of a Hallmark movie or a mass market paperback you might find at a well-stocked airport bookstore, well, yes — but this genre doesn’t typically yield great art. In that context, “The Lost Husband” is at least above average.
It’s not a lack of drama that hobbles “The Lost Husband,” but too much of it: , rather than the dense feature that has resulted here. However, Wight...

"This kind of pain and loss, it cracks you open... But we are made of magic and resilience, Libby." Quiver Distr. has debuted an official trailer for an indie romantic drama titled The Lost Husband, a feature film adapted from the novel of the same name by Katherine Center. Trying to put her life back together after the death of her husband, Libby and her children move to her estranged aunt's goat farm in central Texas. There she falls in with a "gruff farm manager with a tragic past" and, of course, starts to enjoy the country life. Leslie Bibb stars, along with Josh Duhamel, and also Sharon Lawrence, Kevin Alejandro, Georgia King, Carly Pope, Herizen F. Guardiola, Nora Dunn, and Isiah Whitlock Jr. This looks exactly like the country livin', charming, sweet farm romance you'd expect it to look like, which is a good thing this time. Here's the...

A lot can change in a few short years. Technology moves quickly, and so do colloquialisms. But when Megan Abbott and Gina Fattore were adapting Abbott’s 2012 novel “Dare Me” for a 2019 audience, they made it a point to focus more on the universality of a coming-of-age drama and how sometimes one relationship can change everything.
“We were always much more interested in the ‘internalities’ of adolescence, rather than the things that technology or social media change. You date yourself so quickly if you focus too much [on the latter], so we really tried to focus on the elements of being a young woman with feelings of yearning, the desire for more experience, that sense of wanting things that are just beyond your reach, and the feeling that you have power but also being thrown into situations where you’re suddenly aware of your powerlessness,” Abbott tells Variety.

Rob Heaps (Imposters), Zach Roerig (The Vampire Diaries) and Paul Fitzgerald are set as series regulars opposite Willa Fitzgerald, Herizen Guardiola and Marlo Kelly in the USA Network pilot Dare Me, from Universal Cable Productions and Film 44. In addition, Joyful Drake (Let’s Stay Together), Tammy Blanchard, Antonio J. Bell (Nigerian Prince) and Alison Thornton (Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce) round out the cast in key recurring roles.
Based on the acclaimed novel by Megan Abbott, who serves as writer and executive producer along with Gina Fattore, Dare Me is an unflinching exploration of volatile female friendships, jealousy, loyalty and the dynamics of power in a small Midwestern town. Peering behind the all-American façade, the series dives into the cutthroat world of competitive high school cheerleading, following the fraught relationship between two best friends after a new coach (Fitzgerald) arrives to bring their team to prominence.

“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” may be a box office success, but it’s also a film that has provided no shortage of frustration, from not nearly enough Jeff Goldblum to some unnecessarily cruel dinosaur deaths. However, its greatest crime could be this: the typecasting of Justice Smith.
As IndieWire’s Kate Erbland pointed out last week, the “Fallen Kingdom” supporting cast is stacked with talent, from James Cromwell to Geraldine Chaplin — but while Smith might be one of the lesser-known actors in the film, he fully commits to the role of systems analyst Franklin Webb, one of the team members Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) brings with her to Isla Nublar to help rescue the dinosaurs which remain there.
To the film’s credit, Franklin’s ultimate purpose in the film is not to serve as dino bait — in fact, he even gets a minor moment of heroism. However, that only...

Heading into the final five episodes of “The Get Down,” it feels like the story surrounding Baz Luhrmann’s Netflix series has overwhelmed its narrative. Production budgets, structural innovations, and a rare split in the streaming giant’s “all at once” release strategy have dominated conversation, instead of how hip-hop was mis-appropriated and corrupted by the record business. Outside of Baz Luhrmann’s love-it-or-leave-it filmmaking style, there’s no real reason for this: The first six episodes of “The Get Down” delivered its message with addictive grooves and intimate passion. At the very least, everyone should have found a song or two that got them out of their seat and a character (or six) to champion.
If not, the final five episodes may send you reeling. Taking place one year after the end of Part 1, “The Get Down” wraps up Season 1 by amplifying its core musical elements; there are more...

Baz Luhrmann’s epic coming of age musical drama comes to an emotionally thrilling and satisfying conclusion in The Get Down Part 2. This stylized account of the rise of rap and hip hop in 1970’s Bronx, New York picks up one year following the events of Part One, which introduced us to an enormous cast of unique characters including young high school lovers Ezekiel ‘Books’ Figuero (Justice Smith) and Mylene Cruz (Herizen F. When “The Get Down” returns for the second half of its first season on Netflix, the year is 1978; one year after The Get Down Brothers defeated The Notorious Three. Despite that victory, Zeke (Justice Smith), aka Books, and the rest of the crew are still trying to make their mark with an emerging musical style.
In the trailer for the series’ return below, though, we can see Books in a stuffy blazer, and even though he can make anything look good, it’s so drab and dismal compared to the red he wears when he rhymes. Does that fact that Ed Koch is mayor have anything to do with it? Run, Zeke, run!

Unfortunately, Shaolin Fantastic (Shameik Moore) appears to have sunken even deeper into Fat Annie’s (Lillias White) clutches.

Since the turn of the year, Netflix has steadily filled its slate of original content for the first half of 2017. Iron Fist, for instance, kicks things off with an almighty punch on March 17th, and will be followed in quick succession by new seasons of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, House of Cards, Orange is the New Black and Bill Nye Saves the World, which is a relative newcomer to the Netflix pantheon.
Another series that has now booked its placed on that bustling lineup is The Get Down. It’ll return with half a dozen new episodes on April 7th, and we understand Part II will check in on hip-hop supergroup The Get Down Brothers in 1978, a full year after their electrifying debut. Mylene Cruz (Herizen F. Guardiola) and Books (Justice Smith) will once again anchor the drama as two lovestruck musicians swept up in the cultural upheaval at the time.

“The Get Down” got people up out of their seats when it debuted on Netflix last summer, but the new teaser trailer promises we haven’t seen anything yet. Come April 7, when the second half of Season 1 debuts, Baz Luhrmann and The Get Down Brothers are going to drop some “major league” music on us.
Better get ready.
The initial six episodes of “The Get Down” premiered in August 2016, earning largely positive reviews overall (and a rave from IndieWire). Starring Jimmy Smits, Giancarlo Esposito, Justice Smith, Shameik Moore, Herizen F. Guardiola, and Jaden Smith, the first half of Season 1 tracked the rise of a hip-hop supergroup — The Get Down Brothers — formed in the Bronx during the summer of 1977. Simultaneously, Mylene Cruz (Guardiola) gained prominence on her own… with a bit of help from the group’s leader, Books (Justice Smith), and the two shared a steamy romance.
Netflix provided the following synopsis for the second half of Season 1: “Part Two of ‘The Get Down’ picks up in 1978, one year after the events of Part One. The sweeping upheaval of late ’70s New York City finds an as-yet-unnamed new pop cultural force striking a new beat in the Bronx, while disco still reigns supreme. Our young lovers Books and Mylene are caught in the swirl of a looming cultural revolution destined to change everything about their world — but they have this moment to make their mark. Amidst the backdrop of a bankrupt New York City, ruthless gangsters and money-hungry record label bosses, they discover it’s only their creativity and love that will carry them through — and that they’ll sacrifice everything for their music, and each other.

Riz Ahmed, “The Night Of”
The British actor had a small role in “Nightcrawler” on the big screen, but he makes a huge splash on HBO’s anthology drama as Nasir “Naz” Khan, the young man whose night out with a captivating woman goes awry when he discovers her stabbed and he’s accused of her murder. Ahmed is hypnotic in his stillness and silences, but one look at his expressive eyes, and it’s clear that Naz is taking everything in as he learns to navigate the world of prison politics and legal strategy. One can’t help to root for him because he’s clearly innocent… isn’t he? Therein lies Ahmed’s genius, his ability to play both sides so that the viewer oscillates between sympathy and dread that we have gotten it wrong. We can’t wait to see what he does in the Star Wars universe for “Rogue One.

Many filmmakers who transition to television describe the switch as a simple one, usually using a phrase to the effect of, “It’s just a 10-hour movie.” They pretend — and I do mean pretend — that the only difference between what they made for the cinema and what they’re doing for television is the literal length of time they have with the characters.
This, however, is a lie; a lie often innocently told to toss aside a question with a much more complex answer, but still a lie. For the truth is, TV seasons aren’t just longer movies. They’re not novels, either (another popular, but only slightly more accurate simile). They’re TV shows, and they’re designed that way… that is, until “The Get Down.”

What first strikes you is the length.

Shaolin’s the DJ that we call conductor
‘Cause Shaolin Fantastic’s a bad motha–
Amid the many lyrics sung, said and slung in “The Get Down” — Baz Luhrmann’s enthusiastic retelling of how hip-hop was created from an energized blend of disco and soul music — no other is packed with such transformative passion as the above one-two mantra. Stated as simply as a line reading but immediately recognized for the poetic potential within, the string of words form a declarative statement not only for The Fantastic Four + 1 — a street crew led by the aforementioned Shaolin Fantastic (Shameik Moore) and his wordsmith, Books (Justice Smith) — but an embodiment of what makes “The Get Down” a wholly unique and deeply compelling feat of television.

Toward the end of Episode 2 of The Get Down, Baz Luhrmann’s ’70s-set drama about the rise of hip-hop and the fall of disco in New York City, there’s a line of dialogue that hints at the both the undeniable joys and the patented absurdities of the show’s premise and execution.
