Ziwe Fumudoh’s list of iconic guests has run short. The comedian’s Showtime talk show “Ziwe” has been canceled at the premium cable network after two seasons, IndieWire has confirmed.
In addition, the channel has given a six-episode season order to “Seasoned,” a new comedy show starring real-life married couple Mandy Patinkin and Kathryn Grody; co-created and co-written by their son Gideon Grody-Patinkin and Ewen Wright, the show is directly inspired by the pair’s real-life relationship. The channel also passed on the pilot for “The Wood,” a comedy series based on the 1999 film from Rick Famuyiwa. Finally, Showtime acquired “Heist 88,” a crime thriller film starring Courtney B. How Long Gone, the pandemic-born interview and culture podcast from co-hosts Chris Black and Jason Stewart, is joining the Talkhouse Podcast Network.
Talkhouse will handle distribution, ad sales, marketing and other podcast-related partnerships for the show. How Long Gone will continue to remain available on all major podcast platforms. In a joint statement, Black and Stewart said working with Talkhouse will allow the formerly indie show to “continue avoiding Patreon” and join a network that represents other creatives like Björk and Feist.
How Long Gone first launched in March 2020 as a pandemic project as a self-described “bi-coastal elite podcast from old friends and podcast professionals,” where discussions typically involve insider-y takes on fashion, parties, music, restaurants and bars in LA and New York. The topics sit neatly with Black and Stewart’s careers outside of podcasting, with Black working as a creative consultant for brands like Thom Browne and Stewart...

When Chris Wallace’s talk show returns today on HBO Max, there won’t be many changes from its previous incarnation: Sitting on a spartan set with a black backdrop, he interviews celebrities, politicians, authors and other boldfaced names. He even sings, a bit, with Shania Twain.
The biggest change is that it is not on CNN+. Back in March, Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace? was one of the ill-fated subscription streaming service’s signature shows, only to disappear when the venture was shut down by CNN’s new corporate parent Warner Bros. Discovery.

CNN is shaking up its programming lineup, albeit only on a temporary basis ahead of November’s midterm elections.
The biggest changes are happening in primetime, where CNN CEO Chris Licht is giving anchor Jake Tapper the 9 p.m. hour, with anchor Alisyn Camerota and legal analyst Laura Coates sharing the 10 p.m. – 12 a.m. hours.
9 Pm has been vacant since CNN fired Chris Cuomo last year, with a variety of anchors filling in during that time. Tapper will give the hour some stability, at least through the midterms.
Lemon, meanwhile, has held fort at 10 p.m., but will be shifting to the mornings later this year alongside Poppy Harlow and Kaitlan Collins. Lemon and Harlow will host their last shows in their current timeslots Oct. 7 so they can prepare for the new morning show.

CNN announced that Alison Roman’s new project (More Than) A Cooking Show will join the network’s lineup this fall.
It’s the latest CNN+ series to get a new home in the Warner Bros. Discovery universe. Roman’s show had yet to debut when the subscription streaming service was shut down after one month last April.
The new CNN Original Series will be produced by Zero Point Zero Production.
According to CNN, Roman will embark “on a journey to learn about some of her favorite ingredients – where they come from, how to cook them, and why we should and must love eating them as much as she does.” She will share recipes and journey to New York and the Amalfi Coast.
In a statement, Roman said that they set out to “reimagine what a cooking show can be, to make something new and have the best time doing it.

CNN is tweaking its programming recipe for noted food author Alison Roman.
After unveiling an alliance with the culinary influencer that would have put a new original series with her at the center on streaming hub CNN+, the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed outlet will launch a program from her on its flagship cable outlet this fall.
A four-episode series, “(More Than) A Cooking Show,” featuring Roman learning about ingredients, traveling, and trying recipes, will debut on CNN in the fall. The series is produced by Zero Point Zero Productions, the company that was to have created her CNN+ program, and its announcement suggests that CNN is continuing to work to find roosts for several of the concepts it created for the broadband service. CNN+ was quickly scuttled after its launch by a corporate parent eager to cut costs and place CNN content in other parts of its streaming portfolio.

CNN will debut the new original series (More Than) A Cooking Show with Alison Roman this fall, the channel says. The series will see Roman traveling around New York and Italy, learning about some of her favorite ingredients and, yes, sharing ways to cook them.
Roman, a chef and cookbook author, has worked at Bon Appétit and The New York Times, but she also forged a brand through her social media and YouTube channels. Updated, with comment from Chris Wallace and Kasie Hunt: CNN+ is on its way out, but the new leadership at Warner Bros Discovery has given every indication that there could still be a future for some of its programming.
Much of the speculation has centered on the future of the highest-profile hire for the streaming service, Chris Wallace, who stunned his Fox News colleagues in December to announce that he was leaving. His CNN+ show, Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?, has made news on a number of occasions with his probing sit-downs with the likes of Bob Iger and Jen Psaki, and it’s not too much of a leap to imagine him moving to CNN.
There has been some anticipation that Wallace, with his show’s extended and probing interviews, would be most likely to get such a berth. CNN has had a big hole to fill at 9 p.

Move over Quibi, the entertainment industry has a new poster child for epic streaming fails.
Warner Bros. Discovery announced on Thursday that it will be minus CNN+ next week, shuttering 2022’s most confusing SVOD play a mere 32 days after its launch. The quick curtain proves David Zaslav is eager to sunset anything that fails to deliver on his goal of turning his newly combined business into “the best media company in the world.” CNN+ will become another weird footnote under the WarnerMedia leadership tenure of Jason Kilar.
Far from Atlanta, you can hear the champagne-cork popping and laughter emanating from the Fox Nation offices. More importantly, it heralds the arrival of a new era in the streaming wars.
While the conflicts rage on, it is no longer an arms race. As the Netflix Q1 earnings debacle made clear, spending billions to build vast content machines is not a current business...

CNN+ is no more. The streaming service is shutting down just four weeks after its March 29 launch. The service will end all operations on Saturday, April 30, per The New York Times. Warner Bros. Discovery made the call to shut down the CNN streamer, which was championed by CNN chief digital officer Andrew Morse. Morse is reportedly stepping down from his position as the streaming service shutters. Former CNN president Jeff Zucker was also one of its biggest proponents. The CNN+ staff was informed of the decision in an all-hands meeting led by incoming CNN president Chris Licht on Thursday, April 21, at noon. The app was marketed as the future of the news network, with Fox News Sunday‘s Chris Wallace, former NPR host Audie Cornish, and food writer Alison Roman all signing on to work with the service. CNN+’s swift end comes after WarnerMedia closed its merger with Discovery earlier in April.

The decision puts an abrupt end to an ambitious and aggressive venture that people familiar with the matter say rankled David Zaslav, the new CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, from the start. Zaslav was annoyed by the decision of Jason Kilar, the former CEO of WarnerMedia when it was owned by AT&T, to launch CNN+ just weeks before Discovery was set to take over operations. But he was unable to communicate with WarnerMedia management, owing to legal boundaries surrounding the merger process.
“This decision is in line with Wbd’s broader direct-to-consumer strategy,” said Chris Licht, the incoming CEO of CNN, in a statement. “In a complex streaming market, consumers want simplicity and an all-in service, which provides...

The long awaited, heavily promoted CNN+ debuts on Tuesday, with a lineup of live and on-demand programming and, in the media world, a dose of doubts.
Among them: Rivals already have staked their space in the streaming universe. The subscription streaming service needs more must-have programming to lure customers already satiated in monthly fees. And CNN+ is launching just weeks from the network getting a new parent, with the combination of Discovery and WarnerMedia, along with new leadership, with Chris Licht scheduled to take over as the network’s new leader in May.
Yet Andrew Morse, Executive VP and Chief Digital Officer, who leading CNN+, is insistent that what the service offers will be unlike anything else out there.
“We are not trying to launch just another streaming service,” he said in an interview late last week. “What we are building is the most essential and engaging direct-to-consumer news subscription service.

WarnerMedia has officially revealed the launch date of the upcoming CNN+ streamer, with the news subscription service set to land on March 29. People who are interested in CNN Plus finally have a date when they can add it to their streaming repertoire. The WarnerMedia-owned cable-news outlet intends to launch the subscription broadband service on March 29.
The detail — perhaps the last piece of information to be disclosed about the new media venue — comes ahead of a presentation CNN executives and anchors will make during the SXSW Festival this weekend. Andrew Morse, CNN’s chief digital officer and the executive overseeing the new ventures, is expected to discuss it on a panel with political correspondent Kasie Hunt, former pro basketball player Rex Chapman, food influencer Alison Roman and journalist Audie Cornish — all of whom joined CNN for new CNN Plus programs.

Yes, there is going to be some CNN in CNN Plus.
After focusing largely on new talent for the soon-to-launch streaming-video service, WarnerMedia’s CNN is turning some attention to new programming from current staff. CNN has captured attention in recent weeks for unveiling new shows led by people such as Scott Galloway, Chris Wallace, Eva Longoria, Audie Cornish and Alison Roman. Aside from a parenting series led by Anderson Cooper, however, news about new programming from the CNN staffers familiar to viewers has been kept under guard.
Kate Bolduan, who anchors a late-morning hour on the WarnerMedia-backed outlet’s linear cable network, will also lead “Five Things,” s daily morning show that is an extension of a popular newsletter and podcaster. Bolduan will count down five essential stories viewers need to know to start their day. Meanwhile, Sara Sidner, a CNN senior national correspondent, will host “The Big Picture,...

Alison Roman is the latest personality to sign on to CNN’s upcoming subscription streaming service CNN+.
The writer and author will host what the network describes as a “brand new, highly opinionated and never finicky, cooking show,” produced through its CNN Original Series unit.
Roman said in a statement, “I’ve been dreaming about bringing a new sort of cooking and food show to life for years and I can’t think of any place better to make it a reality.”
Roman is the author of Nothing Fancy and Dining In. She produces her own YouTube cooking series Home Movies and a newsletter. She was previously a columnist for Nyt Cooking and editor at Bon Appetit. Roman left Nyt Cooking in late 2020, after comments she made about Chrissy Teigen, suggesting that she was a sellout. Roman later apologized, but her column was put on hold.

Ziwe is set to develop the comedy series “The Nigerian Princess” at Amazon, Variety has learned exclusively.
The project follows Zoe, a wise-beyond-her-years 20-something who, debilitated by student debt, partners with a known grifter in a desperate bid to achieve the American Dream. The two prep school grads make an unlikely alliance all while secretly plotting to scam each other.
Ziwe is the writer and creator of the series, with Will Graham and Hailey Wierengo of Field Trip also executive producing. Wondaland Pictures — the production company founded by Janelle Monae, Chuck Lightning, Mikael Moore, and Nate Wonder — will also executive produce.
The development news is the latest building block in Ziwe’s rapidly growing media presence. Most recently, she launched the self-titled Showtime variety series “Ziwe,” which debuted on the premium cabler back in May.

With her Instagram Live and YouTube talk series Baited, writer and comedian Ziwe Fumudoh didn’t shy away from having uncomfortable conversations of hard truths with people like Caroline Calloway, Alison Roman, Jeremy O, Alyssa Milano and many, many others. Fast forward to 2021, and Fumudoh has now expanded what she launched with her own late-night variety series on Showtime appropriately titled: Ziwe.
Fumudoh joined us on Deadline’s New Hollywood Podcast this week to talk about her journey to Ziwe — and also to let everyone know that she isn’t about trapping people to answer uncomfortable questions with malicious intent. In fact Fumudoh is full of joy and humor and it shows with her new series that includes musical numbers, guest stars, sketches, and fake commercials. There was an argument to be made that the now-mononymous comedy star Ziwe was among the best television performers of 2020 — even though her existing outside television was what had made her a star. Ziwe’s Instagram Live series, in which she delivered startlingly direct interviews with internet stars and comedian peers about race, made fascinating use of the platform’s split-screen technology. On the screen’s bottom half, the guest squirmed and dissembled; Ziwe, eyes glinting in triumph as she went in for the kill, was on top. The magic of her performance lay in the degree to which Ziwe shifted her energy — she could go, in a moment, from benevolently trying to work out issues together with her guest to exposing weaknesses in their thinking, and back again.
Her act had a kinetic, unrehearsed energy that both seemed perfectly unified with its format and seemed to demand a promotion.

With her new Showtime variety series, Ziwe Fumudoh, known professionally as just Ziwe, is ready to create her “Ziwe cinematic universe.”
The comedian and author went viral last summer when she hosted an Instagram Live show “from my bedroom.” Not only did she host and interview guests from Alyssa Milano to Alison Roman, but Ziwe was also responsible for the show’s set design, hair and makeup, costume design and talent booking. Then, if she didn’t want to do an episode, she just didn’t do it, because she was only “accountable to myself,” she tells Variety on the first Emmy edition of the “Awards Circuit” podcast. Listen below!
Now, with a new platform on Showtime and partnership with producers at A24, Ziwe finally has collaborators and can “scale the show up to the level in which I think it deserves.”

One silver lining to emerge out of 2020 was Ziwe, the sharp, Brooklyn comedian who encouraged us to self-reflect, laugh, and cringe at what we saw in the mirror with her video series “Baited.” Now, she’s teamed up with A24 for her own Variety series, titled “Ziwe.” Watch the first trailer below.
Ziwe serves as showrunner, writer, and actor on the series, bringing her singular, no-holds-barred brand of funny to Showtime for her late-night debut. One of the comedy world’s fastest-rising multihyphenates is just a few months away from adding another entry to her growing resume. “Ziwe” will premiere Sunday, May 9, Showtime revealed as part of its Tuesday panel for the Television Critics Association’s virtual Winter 2021 Press Tour. But, while discussing the incident with Fumudoh, Roman said that Teigen had "never" actually signed on. "So she's not and she never was," Roman said. Popular gastronomy seems to come in two extreme flavors these days. At one end of the chicly underdressed table is the kind of easy-breezy, culturally scattered, make-it-your-own casual dining epitomised by Jamie Oliver and Alison Roman. At the other is food as fussy molecular science: hyper-sculpted, tweezer-assembled and outlandish in flavor and presentation, it has made Michelin-starred gods of the likes of Heston Blumenthal, pushing the idea of fine dining into near-fantastically rarefied realms. Mugaritz, the much-lauded Spanish restaurant that is the focus of “Stage: The Culinary Internship,” falls haughtily into the latter category: Abby Ainsworth’s handsome, diverting documentary presents it as a self-styled ivory tower, to which a gaggle of wide-eyed junior chefs annually struggle to gain access, yet there’s as much bemusement as awe in its gaze.

Cookbook author, TV personality and model Chrissy Teigen said she had nothing to do with the New York Times placing columnist Alison Roman on leave from its pages, and asked that she be reinstated.
Teigen, who was attached to executive produce a TV show starring Roman (the show has not begun production because of the pandemic) was mildly dissed by Roman in an online interview that ran in The New Consumer. Roman brought up that Teigen had exploded as a cooking star despite a modest background in the culinary field. Roman said that it “horrified” her.
After that, the New York Times shelved Roman’s column without explanation. Roman subsequently apologized to Teigen and clutter queen Marie Kondo, who also came in for some snark in the same interview.

After that, the New York Times shelved Roman’s column without explanation. Roman subsequently apologized to Teigen and clutter queen Marie Kondo, who also came in for some snark in the same interview.
