Star Wars fans who attended last April's Star Wars Celebration in London were treated to a first look at Skeleton Crew. However, more than a year later, Lucasfilm still hasn't released any of that content online (including the trailer which seemingly confirmed Jude Law is playing a Jedi).
What we do know is that the series takes place around the same time as The Mandalorian, with the expectation being that it will tie into the post-Return of the Jedi era of storytelling. How important it's going to be to the wider franchise and Dave Filoni's eventual crossover movie remains to be seen.
In the meantime, some leaked Skeleton Crew merchandise - first shared on SFFGazette.com - has offered a new look at the show's leads.

Later this year, a new ‘Star Wars’ show is set to debut on Disney+ called “Skeleton Crew,” which “follows the journey of four kids who make a mysterious discovery on their seemingly safe home planet, then get lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy. Finding their way home—and meeting unlikely allies and enemies—will be a greater adventure than they ever imagined.”
Now, we have learned that Lucasfilm is taking the show back to the old techniques used in the original Star Wars films, including matte paintings from a retired Ilm (Industrial Light and Magic) painter and even stop-motion animation from Phil Tippett.
For those who don’t know, Phil Tippett helped create a special animation technique called “go motion” to animate the At-at walkers and tauntauns in “The Empire Strikes Back,” and he led the creature shop in “Return of the Jedi.”

Skeleton Crew is arguably one of the more intriguing Star Wars projects heading our way, with very little known about how the series will fit into the wider Galaxy Far, Far Away (we've heard next to nothing since Star Wars Celebration attendees were treated to a brief sneak peek last April).
What we do know is that the Disney+ series focuses on a group of kids who get lost in space, with Jude Law cast in the lead role as a mysterious Jedi. With a confirmed post-Return of the Jedi setting, we also anticipate it somehow tying into The Mandalorian and Ahsoka.
Collider (via SFFGazette.com) recently spoke with director and executive producer Jon Watts and learned that Skeleton Crew is set to launch this holiday season. That presumably means a December launch.
The filmmaker also shared a new description of the series. "It's about a group of kids...

Kerry Condon, who stars in ‘Skeleton Crew,’ shared her surprise about working with children on the show. She mentioned how this production differs greatly from anything we’ve previously seen in Star Wars.
It’s so great. I don’t even have kids, but I’d pay to see this. I loved it. I loved being on it. There was something about it that was so innocent and playful and lovely. People say don’t work with kids or animals, but I don’t know about that.

Since “Encanto” made its theatrical and streaming debut in 2021, fans have been wondering whether Disney would give the film the sequel treatment – and its star Stephanie Beatriz has expressed her openness to the possibility should the opportunity arise.
“I would love to work with them again. That team on that film was so incredible to work with that. I think a lot of [Jared Bush and Byron Howard’s] time right now is being taken up by other stuff,” she told TheWrap during an interview conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike about her new Peacock series “Twisted Metal.” “I know Jared and I think Bryon too are working on the second ‘Zootopia’ right now. But I would love to work with them again.”
She noted that she is a “huge” Disney fan.
“I go to the parks a lot and whenever people recognize me they ask about that too.

While we’re still several years out from Star Wars returning to the big screen, we’ve got enough Star Wars TV shows to keep us busy. One of those shows is Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, described as “a story about a group of kids, about 10 years old, from a tiny little planet who accidentally get lost in the Star Wars galaxy. And it’s the story of their journey trying to find their way home.” While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Skeleton Crew co-creator Chris Ford and star Jude Law dropped a few teases about the upcoming Star Wars series

Mark Hamill is reflecting on his time playing Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars film saga and saying he’s ready to move on.
“I had my time, and that’s good. But that’s enough,” he said during an interview with CBS Sunday Morning.
Hamill has been playing Luke since “A New Hope” was released back in 1977. The actor most recently reprised his role in 2019’s Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker.
Despite Hamill saying he’s had “enough,” he leaves the door open to having a conversation to continue the role but doesn’t think there’s more story for Luke to have.
“Well, you never say never. I just don’t see any reason to,” he added. “Let me put it that way: I mean, they have so many stories to tell, they don’t need Luke anymore.”

Right from the very start, the thing we’ve known about Star Wars series Skeleton Crew is that it centres on a young cast – its codename title, ‘Grammar Rodeo’, was cribbed from a Simpsons episode in which Bart Simpson and his school friends rent a car with a Fake ID and get in over their heads on a road trip adventure. And that’s the kind of realm Jon Watts depicted a group of galactic kids who escape the school and suburbia of their quiet planet, and head off into the stars – where pirates, a Jedi, and danger awaits.

In the latest season of The Mandalorian_ fandom – you don’t have to look far online to find a surprising level of division between people who all, ostensibly, love the same thing. But not at Star Wars Celebration. The convention dedicated to the galaxy far, far away touched down this year in London – an event bringing every facet of the fandom together, quite literally, in a shared love of the legendary space-opera. In Mandalorian terms, it’d be Bo-Katan’s dream.
This year’s Celebration – packed as ever with live panels, carefully-crafted cosplays, fan meet-ups, and toy stalls galore – was a joyous affair, truly living up to its name. And perhaps its greatest strength was the way in which it looked to the past, the present, and the future of Star Wars – binding them all together, like the Force itself. And now, the up-and-coming actors rounding out the cast of live-action series "Star Wars: Skeleton Crew" have been introduced to the universe.
The series was previously confirmed at the 2022 Star Wars Celebration event in Anaheim, CA, with Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni announcing "Star Wars: Skeleton Crew." The duo will serve as executive producers for the show along with "Spider-Man: Homecoming" collaborators Jon Watts and Christopher Ford.

The upcoming series has been described as "a story about a group of kids ... in the 'Star Wars' galaxy, who have a sense of wonder ... [and] go on an adventure. Dave Filoni and James Mangold are set to direct two new “Star Wars” movies, Lucasfilm revealed on Friday.
The directors will helm two separate films in the franchise. Meanwhile, a third movie that centers on Daisy Ridley’s Rey will be directed by Emmy- and Oscar-winning helmer Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy made the shock announcement at the studio’s showcase during London’s Star Wars Celebration, where fans were expecting the announcement of a single film and were pleasantly surprised by a trifecta of projects.
Mangold’s movie will go back to the dawn of the Jedi, while Filoni’s project will focus on the New Republic, and “close out” the interconnected stories that are told in series including “The Mandalorian,” “The Book of Boba Fett,” “Ahsoka” and other Disney+ shows.

The upcoming series “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” got its first look out of London’s Star Wars Celebration convention. The series, which focuses on a group of kids and is said to evoke classic Amblin films, stars Jude Law, who introduced his young castmates at the Celebration, including Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Kyriana Kratter, and Robert Timothy Smith. The first footage from the series was also shown, including shots of the children on speeders, in school, on spaceships and a tease of a familiar villain from “The Mandalorian.” The clip ended with a first look at Law as a Jedi.
The “Star Wars” spinoff was first announced at the 2022 Star Wars Celebration, held in Anaheim, Calif. Details are scarce for the show, other than the following description: “The show takes place during the post–’Return of the Jedi’ reconstruction that follows the fall of the Empire, the same as ‘The Mandalorian,’ but its plot remains a secret.

Composer Germaine Franco has already made Oscar history with “Encanto” as the first Latina and woman from Disney feature animation to be nominated in the original score category. She’s also broken with tradition by bringing magical realism to the Disney animated musical, holding her own against four veteran composers: Hans Zimmer (“Dune”), Jonny Greenwood (“The Power of the Dog”), Alberto Iglesias (“Parallel Mothers”), and Nicholas Britell (“Don’t Look Up”).
After being recruited by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who musically spearheaded “Encanto” with his eight songs (including the Oscar-nominated “Dos Oruguitas” and the record-breaking “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”), Franco immediately started thinking about Colombia and its vibrant musical traditions, the magical Madrigal family and their enchanted village, and the plucky Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz), whose quirky ordinariness makes her feel like an outsider.

‘Encanto’: Read The Screenplay For Disney’s Animated Musical Featuring Some Lin-Manuel Miranda Magic
Editors note: Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series debuts and celebrates the scripts of films that will be factors in this year’s movie awards race.
Lin-Manuel Miranda had three movies open in 2021, but only Encanto has brand new music by the Hamilton creator. In the Heights was based on his stage musical, while Tick Tick… Boom! featured Jonathan Larson’s autobiographical songs.
Encanto tells the story of Mirabel Madrigal (Stephanie Beatriz), an outcast in a Colombian family where everyone has a unique gift, except for Mirabel. Mirabel’s sister, Luisa (Jessica Darrow), has super strength, and her other sister, Isabel (Dianne Guerrero), can bring vegetation to life. Her cousin, Antonio (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), can talk to animals. Yet, when the magic starts to dwindle, Mirabel still steps up to save the magic, of which she was not a beneficiary.
Producer Clark Spencer said the inspiration for Encanto was her grandparents.

Once upon a time, Disney ventured to the mountains of Columbia to tell a fable so farfetched that one might be mistaken for doubting the claims that this feature didn’t spring fully formed from a fairytale. Encanto is the story of a 15-year-old girl who loves her family and wholeheartedly celebrates their talents while living without a gift of her own; the tall tale of a selfless teen!
Mirabel Madrigal (Stephanie Beatriz) is one of The Magical Madrigals, a celebrated family who live in an enchanted casita at the heart of a verdant Columbian valley where a miraculous new home for a displaced mother and her babies sprang up in the shadow of tragedy and its next generation are using their blessings to serve the town beyond the casita walls.
Mirabel’s Abuela Alma (María Cecilia Botero) takes great pride in her family’s extraordinary talents and their lives of service.

Disney Animation’s newest feature, “Encanto,” centers on the extended Madrigal family, who possess magical powers and live in an enchanted house. Only teenager Mirabel, voiced by “In the Heights” actor Stephanie Beatriz, lacks the gift of incantation.
The movie, which debuts in theaters Nov. 24, is rooted in Colombian culture, so filmmakers Byron Howard and Jared Bush traveled to Cartagena and Bogotá to study the details that would capture the country’s essence. Howard says, “We visited Bogotá, Cartagena and small towns like Barichara, Salento and Palenque and stunning natural landmarks like the Cocora Valley, and spent some time with Colombian families.”
Howard and Bush also learned about secret forests and places of magic called ‘encantos’ which helped the storytellers including Charise Castro Smith bring the Latin experience to the feature and help firmly root the story in magical realism. Says Howard, “These are all over Latin America, usually in areas of natural wonder.

Kenya Barris’ single-camera comedy series #blackAF will not be returning for a second season at Netflix. The renewal decision, announced a year ago today, has been reversed. Barris is in early conversations with the streamer to potentially turn #blackAF into a comedy movie franchise in the mold of National Lampoon’s Vacation, sources confirmed to Deadline.
#blackAF was one of several series Black-ish creator Barris developed under a mega overall deal at Netflix for his Khalabo Ink Society, which he exited late last year for a pact at ViacomCBS. In February, he teased the first series under the ViacomCBS agreement, a show examining contemporary relationships for Paramount+.
At Netflix, Barris also executive produced the Astronomy Club sketch comedy series, which ran for one season, and has the upcoming Kid Cudi adult animated music series Entergalactic.

Netflix is rescinding another renewal.
The streaming giant is no longer moving forward with #blackAF Season 2, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Season 2 was officially ordered a year ago, but with Covid-19 bringing the TV and movie industry to a halt, there have been questions about the viability of the series.
For their part, Netflix canceled Glow Season 4 and The Society Season 2 due to the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic.
Still, the story may not be over for the Kenya Barris series.
THR is reporting that the semi-autobiographical sitcom is being redeveloped as a potential film franchise, and that movies are in development.
The news will undoubtedly be concerning for fans of the series, especially because the movie franchise has not officially been ordered.
When projects are in development, a number of things can change, but we'll keep you posted.

By now, there have been enough movies and TV dramas focused on the fraying ties between individuals gradually diminished by Alzheimer’s disease and their supportive but increasingly stressed loved ones to constitute an entire subgenre. If “The Artist’s Wife” stands apart from the pack, it’s largely because this familiar but affecting drama spends less time on depicting the systematic lessening of an exceptional intellect — though, rest assured, that tragedy is not at all minimized — and focuses more on the psychic toll taken on a loyal life partner whose selflessness is running on empty.

Kenya Barris says he is working harder than he ever has in his life. The writer, who added actor to his resume with #blackAF, is working on a second season of the Netflix comedy, is plotting a feature-length music about Juneteenth with Pharrell Williams and is developing a multitude of comedies, dramas, films and documentaries under his multi-million dollar Netflix deal. He also still has a hand in the Black-ish universe and is plotting one more show in that universe.
Barris talks to Deadline about the process of creating #blackAF, becoming an actor for the first time, mining his own life for comedy, his take on critiquing Black shows, how he’s getting on in the streaming universe as well as plans for his production company Khalabo Ink Society.
Inspired by Barris’ irreverent, highly flawed, unbelievably honest approach to parenting, relationships, race, and culture, #blackAF flips the traditional sitcom family on its head.

Netflix plans to stay in the Kenya Barris business: The streamer has renewed Barris’ comedy #blackAF for a second season.

Barris and Jones will be joined by Genneya Walton, Iman Benson, Scarlet Spencer, Justin Claiborne, Ravi Cabot-Conyers (The Resident) and Richard Gardenhire Jr.

Walton is 18-year-old Chloe Barris, the effortlessly popular, under appreciative college student with an astounding level of entitlement. Benson plays 17-year-old Drea Barris,...
