CAA China has teamed up with the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society to unveil a joint initiative that will foster Chinese-language genre film projects.
The Hgc initiative will operate an open call for projects from Monday until the end of October. Five successful projects will be selected and presented at next year’s FilMart rights market and Haf project matching event.
As part of the program, “CAA China will fund $20,000 cash awards to each of two handpicked projects to support their development, with customized guidance from mentors.” CAA China may also choose to board the winning projects later by entering into script development agreements.
“We are witnessing the rise of a new generation of Chinese filmmakers who are the backbone of Chinese cinema,” said Mary Gu, CEO of CAA China. “By collaborating with Hkiff Society, our aim is to discover and support young filmmakers with industry awareness and mainstream expression.

Outside of a few horror movies, my experience of Chinese movies is seriously lacking and it is something I should definitely try to change in 2023. Back to the Wharf feels like a great choice to start with that.
An escaped convict comes back to his home town after the death of his mother, fifteen years after he left. He soon learns that the past is still haunting him and gets mixed up in the seedy underbelly of the city and the reasons he left.
This slow-burn Chinese drama looks fantastic. Especially when the city and streets have rain showering down on them and the street lights are glowing. Many of the driving scenes featured this and I loved them. Two driving scenes feature crashes that look realistic and manage to shock without blood or gore.

Red Water Entertainment will serve as a home for genre cinema from around the world, focused on bringing North American audiences high-quality cinema with no language or regional barriers.
It will work primarily in the horror, science fiction and action genres, but will release films from the vast spectrum that the term ‘genre’ encompasses. “There’s a lot of wonderful genre cinema that never sees the light of day in North America, and I’m excited to help some of these films find the audiences they deserve,” said Federgreen.
