Michael Peter Olsen is a composer for film and television, cellist, Grammy- nominated songwriter, arranger and music producer. In 2014 he was selected as one of three songwriters-in- residence for the Canadian Film Centre's Slaight Music Residency, chaired by Oscar-winning composer Mychael Danna. As a cellist he is known for his collaborations on over 100 recordings including Drake's Views, Arcade Fire's Funeral, K-OS' Joyful Rebellion, Jim Guthrie's Now More than Ever and The Hidden Cameras' Smell of Our Own.
A multi-instrumentalist specializing in non classical cello, Olsen has appeared live with more artists than easily counted. He toured internationally with Hidden Cameras in the early 2000s and has graced the stage and recordings of diverse artists such as Tiesto, Haim, Holy Fuck, Zaki Ibrahim, Great Lake Swimmers, Owen Pallet, The Constantines, Mocky, Sarah Slean, and Jim Guthrie. He has written music for network TV, short and feature films, and animation.
Michael Peter Olsen launched an electric cello concept project in 2020 under his own name to introduce his new "Post-Cello" sound, a fresh take on his lifelong instrument incorporating 25 years of non classical playing and recording. His first full length was released internationally on Canadian boutique indie label Hand Drawn Dracula Jan 15th 2021 and was the in the top 20 of the most added albums to North American College Radio within a week. Michael garners over 11,000 listeners a month on Spotify and has toured Europe in support of the release. (though not lately)
Michael holds a BA in music performance from the University of Toronto. Holds an ARCT and belongs to the AFM and SCGC.
