Following Arthur’s journey, we have certainly come a long way, seeing the man tackle all the challenges he faced. In The Winter King Season 1 finale, he had not one but two tasks, both of which could prove deadly if not done right. Firstly, there was the deal with the Saxons. He was going to meet Aelle himself, and that too with just the tin gained from Kernow. After that challenge, he had to find Derfel before he perished in his quest to rescue Nimue from the Isle of Death. Derfel had left Dumnonia after he found out that Arthur had banished Nimue from the lands. This left Arthur without a Saxon translator, a department where Guinevere helped a little, although when Aelle came to meet Arthur, it turned out he spoke the British tongue rather well.

The ninth episode of The Winter King, goes into some unexpected territories, but if you’d noticed the hints from the first episode, you’d have seen this one coming. People had questioned Arthur’s intentions since the moment he returned. In fact, even earlier, Uther didn’t trust Arthur, and he had banished him, marking one of his most significant decisions, one that was potentially his worst. After he returned, Arthur was questioned by people like Owain, Gorfydd, and Cadwys, who seemed too gripped by their own personal interests to really make us see Arthur’s vulnerabilities or make us question whether Arthur had malicious intent. But now, even those people in his life who respected him and cared for him have started to turn against him. Morgan, Derfel, and Guinevere were the ones who were questioning Arthur’s decisions, and he too, for a brief moment, showed that...

The eighth episode of The Winter King juxtaposes steamy romance with brutal killings and organically moves Arthur’s story into a terrifying terrain. Arthur had married Guinevere, and his services had been conducted by Sansum, the Christian zealot. Arthur had listened to his heart, and soon the forces against him were going to attack, as if to punish him for his decision. Gorfydd, obviously, was the one directly impacted by Arthur’s escape with Guinvere, but Cadwys, Nimue, and Bedwin were going to create problems for Arthur, intentionally and otherwise. The show’s brutal turn is shocking, but when the stakes are this high, nothing else can be expected.

The seventh episode of The Winter King brought home the feeling that Arthur wasn’t as infallible as he was made out to be. It is the first time in the series that Arthur makes an escape like a thief in the night. The fact that even Arthur could go wrong or take a U-turn on a decision that he had once taken with such vigor shows that his journey has just started. The episode gave us insights into the gender dynamics in Arthur’s time and how alliances were formed between kingdoms. Arthur was to marry Ceinwyn for the alliance to work, but Guinevere’s entry complicated things a bit. Now the ball was in Arthur’s court, and he made a decision that could destabilize all of Britain.

Romance has been subdued so far in the series. There was carnal desire everywhere, but subtle eye glances were missing from The Winter King. The sixth episode adds a little bit of spice to Arthur’s story. In the previous episode, Arthur had to kill Owain, and this episode had us see his angst and regret. He was searching for answers, and he may have put his foot down on the idea of forming the Council of Kings. Convincing King Gorfydd may just bring more trouble into Arthur’s life than he expected. It makes for a calmer episode, but the tension has in no way subsided. One wrong move, and Arthur could jeopardize Britain’s future. Here is a recap of Episode 6:

A central character in Pascal Plante’s disturbing thriller is a mousy-looking man, the sort of anonymous figure you wouldn’t give a second look, on trial for the brutal murders of three teenage girls, which he broadcast live on the dark web. And he’s not even the scariest person onscreen in Red Rooms (Les Chambres rouges).

For reasons never explained in the film — showcased at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival — successful fashion model Kelly-Anne has become obsessed with Ludovic Chevalier (Maxwell McCabe-Lokos, personifying the banality of evil), whose case is being heard in a Montreal courtroom.
Although the killer is masked in two of the snuff videos (the third has gone unfound), there’s a preponderance of evidence against Chevalier, who sits alone in a booth like a modern-day Adolf Eichmann. He’s all the...

Revivals have been a mainstay of Broadway for decades. But it wasn’t until the 31st ceremony in 1977 that the Tony Awards added a new category honoring these productions. The nominees for the inaugural prize were “Guys and Dolls,” “The Cherry Orchard” and “The Three Penny Opera” with “Porgy and Bess” taking the honors. Other winners over the years included “The Pirates of Penzance,” “Anything Goes,” “Death of a Salesman,” “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Gypsy.”
In 1994, the category was divided into best revival of a musical with Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Carousel” winning the award and “An Inspector Calls” taking home the best revival of a play honor.
This year’s nominees in both categories celebrate the work of Stephen Sondheim, Henrik Ibsen and three landmark black playwrights: August Wilson, Suzan-Lori Parks and Lorraine Hansberry. Here’s a closer look at this year’s contenders.

Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe’s Camelot never achieved the status of their My Fair Lady. But the 1960 musical about King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, long cherished for its lush score and evergreen songs, attained a kind of mythic status, becoming a potent symbol of a certain political moment in our national history. Shortly after the assassination of J.F.K. in 1963, Jacqueline Kennedy told a reporter that her husband was a big fan of the romantic and idealistic musical and suggested, quoting a lyric from the title song, that the Kennedy era was, like Camelot itself, a “brief shining moment” that must never be forgotten.

With 38 productions eligible for this year’s Tony Awards, there were plenty of names missing when nominations were announced on Tuesday morning. Among the most surprising 2023 Tony nominations snubs was “Life of Pi” for Best Play. The production earned nine Olivier Award nominations across the pond, winning Best New Play, Actor (Hiran Abeysekera), Featured Actor, Lighting Design and Set Design. But at the Tonys, it missed out on a Best Play bid and didn’t score a nomination for Abeysekera. The production did perform well in the design categories, though, earning five nominations including for director Max Webster.

There was a moment I knew much was going wrong with Aaron Sorkin's musical bookwriting debut with the "Camelot" Broadway revival. It arrives when Phillipa Soo groans at the title number "Camelot" with an attitude that reads "Is this guy seriously doing a musical number?"
Yet, the same scene builds to a realization that Sorkin's penmanship can go right. It's when the young King Arthur (Andrew Burnap) persuades his arranged betrothed, Guenevere (Soo), of a risky experiment: "Together we may discover if power might be harnessed as a force of good." The promise of this experiment persuades the skeptical princess that her marital purpose might yield a net gain — as long as she doesn't over-test her obligations.
Those aware of "Camelot" and its often-adapted legend source material (credited to T.H. White's "The Once and Future King" in this case) know that the burgeoning passions between Guenevere and the...

In the lead-up to Tony nominations being announced on May 2, Sam Eckmann and I are predicting 10 of the Musical categories, where new breakout shows like “Kimberly Akimbo” and “Some Like it Hot” and revivals of “Sweeney Todd” and “Into the Woods” will compete for the highest honors of the New York theatre community. Nominations will be announced on May 2 and winners will be revealed on June 11. Watch the full video slugfest above.
At the outset, I declare that I think “Kimberly Akimbo” will have “a sensational Tony night.” The new show by Jeanine Tesori and David Lindsay-Abaire leads both of our predictions for the Best Musical prize, but we agree that “Some Like it Hot” will be a strong challenger. If you’re eagerly awaiting the release of Seven Kings Must Die – the final feature-length instalment of The Last Kingdom, airing on Netflix this April – you might be wondering what will fill the epic battle-filled hole in your TV viewing schedule once it’s all over.
Good news: the answer could be Bad Wolf’s new show The Winter King, which will air on Itvx. This brand-new historical fiction TV series has more than just the Middle Ages setting in common with The Last Kingdom: they’re also both based on a series of Bernard Cornwell novels. This time, however, instead of Saxons vs. Vikings, The Winter King will tell the story of the legend of King Arthur:
“Once upon a time, in a land that was called Britain, these things happened.”
