What a time for "Avatar: The Last Airbender" fans to be alive. The Aang Gang was first immortalized in Nickelodeon's original animated series, one that practically altered the brain chemistry of countless kids of my generation and introduced us to the sheer potential of storytelling. Netflix most recently took advantage of the nostalgia and goodwill the show still enjoys, translating the tale of Aang's destiny as the Avatar and his war against the Fire Nation into a live-action retelling that quickly justified a second and third season. All that took place as a backdrop to the news first reported two years ago, of course, which indicated that Avatar Studios (headed by the creators of the original show, Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dimartino) was going all in on a trio of new animated movies set in the world of "Avatar."

The Scooby-Doo Gang
Even though there are several cartoons and animated series that enjoy similar popularity, what makes the adventures of Scooby-Doo and his friends is the countless crossovers they have had. Under the old political regime in Taiwan it was difficult to make features, given the thematic and narrative constraints producers and directors had to obey. However, as these began to shift somewhat in the 1970s, the career of filmmakers such as Lee Hsing truly flourished as he began to tackle current issues, for example, in his Vertigo-esque “The Young Ones” or the drama “The Story of a Small Town”. Arguably one of his most well-known projects from that era is “Execution in Autumn”, a period drama set on the brink of the 1900s. Hsing has gone on record, stating this is his favorite film of his career, perhaps not only due to the nods at the likes of Kenji Mizoguchi, but also due to its universal and political themes.

Ram Gopal Verma Asks Schools To “Teach Students ‘How To Make A Film Like Animal’” ( Photo Credit – Facebook )
Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal has set the box office on fire with its loud roar. Headlined by Ranbir Kapoor, the film is making the right kind of noise on social media and at the ticket windows. Apart from making and breaking records with its astounding collections across the globe, it’s also receiving massive criticism from a section of the audience, who are slamming the Vanga directorial left, right, and center. A couple of days back, a Congress MP bashed the film and its makers for glorifying violence, toxic masculinity, and misogyny.
As the film has divided the audience and netizens into sections, a couple of filmmakers have come out supporting the Vanga directorial. After Anurag Kashyap, Ram Gopal Varma lent his support to the film while bashing the critics for giving negative reviews.

There’s nothing quite like a throwback film – whether it’s driven by nostalgia or executed as a creative exercise, it’s fun to see how creatives handle the material.
Weston Razooli’s Riddle of Fire has all of the hallmarks of a classic ’80s children adventure film, mixed with the quaintness of a British fairytale. This is evident from the film’s opening scene, which features ethereal folk music, heavily stylized cursive font, and fairytale language: “Are ye a knight or are ye a squire? Can ye solve the Riddle of Fire?”
Like the best examples from the ’80s, however, there’s a persistent undercurrent of peril as the child characters are repeatedly put in danger with antagonists who won’t hesitate to harm or even murder them. In short: think Goonies meets Adventures in Babysitting with a touch of The Princess Bride‘s aesthetic.
