A member of a Ku Klux Klan unit in Alabama, he was arrested in 1965 for the murder of civil-rights worker Viola Liuzzo. He was tried in a state court but acquitted. He was tried and convicted in a federal court of conspiring to violate Mrs. Liuzzo's civil rights, convicted and sentenced to ten years in prison, but died of a heart attack before he could begin his sentence.
