Curt was born to Robert MacLean, an orthodontist, now retired, and Elissa H. MacLean, an educator in Inglewood, California. He has three older brothers and a younger sister. He began black and white photography as a hobby when he was a teen, having his own lab to process film and enlarge prints. He became fascinated by sharks at a young age. After graduating from UC Santa Barbara in 1991, He traveled to Bolivia and Paraguay as an assistant volleyball coach and team photographer. Shortly after that he met his wife, Karen, who is a physical therapist. They have been married 23 years. They have one son, Dan, who at 16 is already an accomplished photographer and short film maker. In 2006 he traveled to Mongolia for a construction project. A jack of all trades, Curt has had careers as a teacher, a pharmacy technician, a personal tutor, a Quality Control and Inventory Technician for a flavor manufacturing company, a clerk at Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation, and most recently he is combining all of the experiences from these as he embarks into the art and visual effects fields which he has long hoped to do. His work will be seen in the upcoming Timepiece (2016).
