California Gov. Gavin Newsom will get his second opportunity to appoint a U.S. senator with the death of the Golden State’s senior stateswoman on Thursday — putting him in a position he said he dreaded earlier this month. “I don’t want to make another appointment,” he told Meet The Press’s Chuck Todd. “I don’t think the people of California want me to make another appointment.”
In December 2020, Newsom appointed Alex Padilla, then California’s secretary of state, to fill the opening created by Kamala Harris’ ascension to the vice presidency.

The Flaming Lips’ upcoming headlining set at San Fransisco’s Stern Grove Festival is about to be made all the more special: That date, August 20th, will henceforth be known as “The Flaming Lips Day” in the city, recognizing the Bay Area’s significance in launching the iconic rock band’s career.
San Fransisco mayor London Breed will present the special proclamation to The Flaming Lips ahead of their performance at the festival, which is the longest-running outdoor music festival in California. Joining her in bestowing the honor are the festival’s Board Chair Matthew Goldman, Executive Director Bob Fiedler, and Commissioner and Chair of California State Parks Phil Ginsburg.
“We’re very grateful to embrace August 20 as The Flaming Lips Day in San Francisco,” the band’s Wayne Coyne said in a press release. “We’ve had many shared moments in this city and we feel grateful to be...

D’Arcy Drollinger didn’t always plan on being a drag queen. San Francisco’s new drag laureate lived in New York for years trying to make it as a playwright. After assisting in Broadway numbers and later working as a publicist for the Museum of Modern Art, she returned to the Bay Area where she’s become a well-respected leader for the city’s sprawling, long-established queer community.
“While I loved it, I realized it wasn’t my calling,” she tells Rolling Stone of her time working for the museum.

In an effort to combat the joyless, monochromatic fuddy-duddies trying to ban drag performers with legislature, the city of San Francisco has appointed its first “drag laureate”: performer and nightclub owner D’Arcy Drollinger. The city’s mayor, London Breed, said the role made sense for a city with a long history of supporting LGBTQ+ rights. Drollinger will receive a $55,000 stipend from government funds for the position — the first of its kind in the nation — for a year and a half of service, according to The Associated Press.

Bill Maher, a self-avowed libertarian who prides himself on doling out critical opinions against conservatives and liberals alike, dove into a problem he sees with Democrats and the left in an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper on Tuesday night.
Maher and Tapper were discussing the notion of “wokeness,” with Tapper pointing out that he hears the term often but that it “means something different to everybody.”
“I think it’s this collection of ideas that are not building on liberalism but very often undoing it,” Maher said. “I mean, five years ago, Abraham Lincoln was not a controversial figure among liberals. We liked him. Now they take his name off schools and tear down his statues. Really, Abraham Lincoln isn’t good enough for you?”

The stir over photos showing him and politicians maskless over the weekend are much ado about nothing, Johnson said on Friday during Apple TV Plus’ portion of the Television Critics Assn. press tour. Johnson was there to promote “They Call Me Magic,” a new four-part docuseries that premieres on April 22.
“I wore my mask in, I wore my mask out,” Johnson said. “The photos were the photos. Those two guys, Governor Newsom had his mask on, we took the photo. Mayor Garcetti had his mask on and we took the photo, that’s it.”
Johnson experienced a media stir earlier this week, after he posted photos of himself with California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti while not wearing masks in a private suite at SoFi Stadium. Johnson, Newsom, Garcetti, San Francisco mayor London Breed and others were watching the NFC championship game, which the Los Angeles Rams eventually won vs.

One day after Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and San Francisco Mayor London Breed were called out for posing for maskless photos with Magic Johnson inside SoFi Stadium, a Los Angeles County Supervisor has called for state and local health officials to reevaluate Covid mask mandates, saying it should be up to the individual to decide when to wear one.
“Let’s do away with blanket Covid masking policies — they don’t make a difference when they’re not consistently followed or enforced. We need to trust the public to make the best personal decisions for themselves based on their unique risks and circumstances,” Supervisor Kathryn Barger said in a statement.
In a Twitter post, Barger pointed to Sunday’s NFC Championship game at SoFi Stadium, noting there was inconsistent adherence to the mask-wearing requirement.

Toward the end of a riveting NFC Championship game at SoFi stadium in Inglewood yesterday, the camera singled out a number of famous names in attendance. They included Leo DiCaprio, Jessica Alba, Magic Johnson and California Governor Gavin Newsom. None of them was wearing a mask.
Johnson later tweeted a series of photos from the event featuring himself and a number of others in a luxury box overlooking the field. They included Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, San Francisco Mayor London Breed and California Governor Gavin Newsom. No masks are visiable in the the Newsom photo, despite a local public health officer order requiring them and repeated reminders from Los Angeles County Public Health officials over the past two weeks that masks must be worn at such mega events, even at outdoor gatherings.

Bill Maher’s Real Time was back on HBO Friday night, returning from its winter break as the host told his studio audience that it was “wonderful to see your beautiful masks again.”
That was the theme for most of the show, as Maher and guests looked back on things that happened in the long stretch between his last show in November and today. He exited at a time when omicron wasn’t really around, unlike now, when the variant is causing all sorts of chaos.
Thus, where things stand now with the pandemic was the key focus of Friday’s panel discussion with author/journalist Bari Weiss and New York Congressman Ritchie Torres.
Maher noted that there’s “A reset going on in the world. We have to live with (the coronavirus). It’s not going away.”
Torees agreed. “I think we’re gradually transitioning to normal,” while Weiss echoed,...

San Francisco went green on Saturday evening as Lana Wachowski’s The Matrix Resurrections made its U.S. premiere at the city’s historic Castro Theater.
Naturally, Warner Bros. opted out of the standard red carpet for the event, in favor of a green one—with Mayor London Breed also getting in on the celebration of the film, which shot select scenes in San Francisco. “In honor of the Matrix Resurrection movie premiere tonight right here at our own Castro Theater, buildings across the city — including City Hall — will be participating in the Light San Francisco Matrix Green project!” she wrote on Twitter.
Set for release in theaters and on HBO Max on December 22, The Matrix Resurrections is the fourth film in the iconic sci-fi franchise which comes 18 years after the release of the sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, and 22 years after its launch with The Matrix.

Thanks, but no thanks, San Francisco Mayor London Breed.
While San Francisco County gave the go-ahead for movie theaters to reopen today, members of the National Association of Theatre Owners of California/Nevada have agreed unanimously to remain closed in the City by the Bay.
Why? San Francisco’s current ban on movie concessions “makes it economically impossible for our members to reopen and significantly limits the moviegoing experience for our audiences,” NATO CA/Nv said in a release today.
“NATO of CA/Nv respectfully asks that San Francisco city officials follow the state’s and other counties’ guidelines in their approach to reopening theatres, while also remaining consistent with how they’re allowing other businesses to reopen,” reads the release.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed Thursday announced that the city’s stage-three reopening, which includes cinemas, is tentatively set for mid-August. That, of course, is a month later than the scheduled release of the first two major studio films, “Tenet” (Warner Bros.) on July 17 and “Mulan” (Disney) on July 24.
Is this a major blow for the chances that these two films will open nationally and worldwide? By itself — no. But in the larger context, possibly.
The plan affects only those theaters within the boundaries of the city of San Francisco, which accounts for about 900,000 people in a metropolitan area of about 4.8 million. For a normal, first-run wide release, that would mean just five theaters out of about 4,000 in North America. Even as top-grossing locations, they’re still small in terms of the total gross. For “Dunkirk,” which made over $50 million in its opening weekend, these theaters contributed less than $400,000.

San Francisco yesterday became the first major box office city to give a specific opening date for theaters, mid-August, which is after planned release dates of the first big summer films, Tenet and Mulan, in mid and late-July respectively and the late June-July target anticipated by the biggest chains like AMC Entertainment and Regal.
AMC has said it will only reopen if there are movies to show.
It’s possible that theaters could still open with Tenet showing in Los Angeles and around the world, industry players have told Deadline.
The exhibition target was part of San Francisco Mayor London Breed’s announcement of a tentative schedule that provides a guideline for the reopening of San Francisco’s various business categories. Movie theaters are part of a ‘Phase 3,’ although B. Riley Fbr analyst Eric Wold, who covers the sector closely, noted that the target date of mid-August could push be...
