CNN’s Mark Thompson told advertisers additional details about the network’s strategy, with plans to expand franchises to digital platforms and to build new branded verticals around topics beyond politics.
“We don’t believe news is just politics,” Thompson said at the Warner Bros. Discovery upfront. “Business and tech are news. Climate and weather are news. Health, wellness and living longer are news. So expect to see us build new branded verticals in all these areas on TV, on our apps and across our other platforms.”
Thompson has previously made the case that viewers are interested in a wider scope of coverage areas, while he has outlined plans to integrate linear TV and digital news units, and to boost CNN’s presence and innovation on smart phones and other mobile devices.

CNN anchor Kate Bolduan got an interesting new job in 2022 when she was named the anchor of “5 Things,” a quick-hit open-the-day summary of top stories that was made available for streaming audiences. Two years later, she appears poised to get it again.
Bolduan will lead a test run of “5 Things” starting Monday on CNN Max, the live-streamed news service available on Max, the streaming venue backed by corporate parent Warner Bros. Discovery. The program’s reappearance after a long absence marks the latest chapter in a concept that many at the news outlet seem to love, but just can’t figure out how to transform into a sustainable video franchise. CNN already operates a podcast and newsletter tied to the format.
CNN has reason to try “5 Things” anew. It was one of the more popular offerings made available on CNN+, an ambitious but short-lived subscription-based streaming service launched in 2022 in...

A small contingent of journalists gathered near the Canadian border earlier this morning to watch as Dixville Notch, Nh, continued its tradition of casting the first ballots on an election day.
Nikki Haley cleaned Donald Trump’s clock in this hamlet — 6 votes to none.
As the day goes on, network correspondents are fanning out across the state at precincts to talk to actual voters, after months in which the first-in-the-nation primary was judged and assessed by polls. Commentary and analysis is focusing on whether
Haley and her top surrogate, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, blitzed the airwaves on Monday, while Trump held a final rally in Laconia, Nh, where he predicted that Haley would be out of the race after tonight. He was interrupted by climate protesters, who have been a frequent presence at events in recent days.

Have you heard it’s cold in Des Moines? The subzero temperatures are making Monday’s caucuses in Iowa the coldest on record, a running theme of coverage throughout the day and into this evening. It’s not trivial, as the frigid weather may very well impact turnout.
As Iowa’s first votes of the 2024 presidential race come in, expect a lot of analysis, punditry and prediction, even if the results represent just a sliver of the primary electorate. The Hawkeye state’s primacy as the first-in-the-nation often obscures the peculiarities of the caucus system, unless there is some kind of glitch, which is what happened four years ago with the Democrats.
That said, networks see the caucuses as the kickoff of what is hoped a spike in viewer interest in the presidential contest, as was seen in 2020 and 2016. All of the broadcast networks are planning for ongoing coverage of...

Can “King Charles” rule in the heady, competitive world of cable news? CNN will soon find out.
The new weekly one-hour program will debut Wednesday, November 29, at 10 p.m., and will be co-anchored by the unlikely duo of Gayle King, who still has her long-running day job at rival CBS News, and Charles Barkley, the outspoken sportscaster who remains a key element in the NBA coverage provided by CNN’s parent, Warner Bros. Discovery. CNN executives are counting on the pair to have freewheeling conversations about the biggest stories in the news cycle. “King Charles” is viewed as a limited-run series that will last at least through the first quarter of next year.
“‘King Charles’ is different than anything we have on CNN’s lineup,” says Amy Entelis, CNN’s executive vice president for talent and content development, in responses to questions provided by email. “It’s not a newscast,...

Launching a third season, Sound Judgment takes listeners into the studios — and the minds — of your favorite audio storytellers.
Unlike virtually every other show about podcasting, Sound Judgment explores the audio storytelling craft, not the business of podcasting.
In each episode, journalist Elaine Appleton Grant and a top audio creator deconstruct an episode of the guest’s show. It’s not just a revealing conversation about the art and craft of audio storytelling, it’s a sound-rich narrative interview: Grant plays back clips from her guest’s podcast. Together, they explore the storyteller’s creative choices in a “living learning lab.”
In its first year, the critically acclaimed podcast has been called “your online master’s degree in audio storytelling” by Whisper, Speak, Roar Media; “a masterclass in podcasting” by Ear Worthy, and “required listening for our profession” by the supervising podcasting producer at ABC News. Grant made Ear Worthy...

CNN+ may not have worked, but perhaps CNN on Max will.
Warner Bros. Discovery is planning to launch new original programs from CNN that will stream on its Max streaming service, according to three people familiar with the matter. Jim Sciutto, Bianna Golodryga, Rahel Solomon and Christiane Amanpour are among the CNN journalists who have been tapped to take part in the effort, according to two of these people.
CNN and Max could make an announcement about the project as soon as Thursday, according to these people, and would likely provide greater detail. A spokeswoman for CNN declined to comment and a spokesman for Max declined to comment.
Warner Bros. Discovery scuttled the nascent CNN+ streaming service within days of taking over CNN’s corporate parent, once known as WarnerMedia, from AT&T in 2022. Now the company seems more eager to make CNN programming available to cord-cutters, perhaps realizing that the cable-news giant,...

It is the best of times and the worst of times for podcasting. Facing challenges surrounding the advertising model, macroeconomic concerns and a post-pandemic slowdown, some of the biggest players, including Spotify, Vox Media and NPR, announced mass layoffs. Many others — like SiriusXM and Amazon — cut their podcast budgets significantly. Warner Bros. Discovery is exploring ways to get more CNN programing on to its Max streaming service, according to a person familiar with the matter, looking at the news outlet’s broader portfolio to see what content might work. Executives will have to navigate agreements with CNN’s traditional distributors that often require cable and satellite companies get first access to CNN’s live broadcasts.

The frenzied question of “Will Chris Licht survive?” is on the minds of media pundits everywhere after a devastating, 16,000-word takedown of the CNN chief that ran in The Atlantic magazine on Friday.
That question is exactly what moves the gossip mill. It’s juicy. But it misses the point.
The actual question is: How should CNN cover the news? What is the path and mission for a defining media property that is central to the health of our democracy?
Or to put it most starkly: What is CNN?
As a nation, we no longer tune in to network evening news and there is no defining, trusted voice in broadcast in morning, evening or late night. Decision-makers and cognoscenti of all stripes watch cable news. Ratings leader Fox News Channel...

Josh Campbell will lead CNN’s new “Guns in America” beat, one of the new initiatives announced earlier this year by CNN chairman and CEO Chris Licht.
Providing reporting and analysis to the beat will be figures from a range of points of view, including Stephen Gutowski, the founder of firearms reporting site Reload; Jennifer Mascia from The Trace, which covers the impact of gun violence; and Abené Clayton, reporter on the The Guardian’s Guns and Lies in America project.
CNN said that the team “will explore who buys and sells guns; who makes and regulates them; and dive into the communities most impacted to help illuminate possible solutions to America’s epidemic of gun violence.”
Campbell serves as CNN’s guns and security correspondent, having joined the network after serving as a supervisory special agent with the FBI. He won an Emmy in 2021 for his reports on the murder of George Floyd.

Releasing Thursdays on all major podcast platforms, the show will feature interviews with “everyday people” at the center of debates happening in the arts, education, politics, business and sports, according to CNN.
“I’m thrilled to launch The Assignment with the CNN Audio team. CNN is tweaking its programming recipe for noted food author Alison Roman.
After unveiling an alliance with the culinary influencer that would have put a new original series with her at the center on streaming hub CNN+, the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed outlet will launch a program from her on its flagship cable outlet this fall.
A four-episode series, “(More Than) A Cooking Show,” featuring Roman learning about ingredients, traveling, and trying recipes, will debut on CNN in the fall. The series is produced by Zero Point Zero Productions, the company that was to have created her CNN+ program, and its announcement suggests that CNN is continuing to work to find roosts for several of the concepts it created for the broadband service. CNN+ was quickly scuttled after its launch by a corporate parent eager to cut costs and place CNN content in other parts of its streaming portfolio.

CNN’s loss is MSNBC’s gain.
Rebecca Kutler, a veteran CNN talent and development executive who had a hand in the success of anchors and contributors such as Abby Phillip and Van Jones, is joining MSNBC as its senior vice president of content strategy. She will run MSNBC’s streaming efforts and develop new program concepts for both the linear cable network and MSNBC’s presence on the NBCUniversal Peacock streaming hub.
Kutler will report to Rashida Jones, president of MSNBC, who informed employees of the hire Wednesday morning. Kutler starts her new role on September 26.
Kutler recently parted ways with CNN. During her time there, she worked as an executive producer for Don Lemon and John King, among others and hired Phillip and Andrew McCabe. Rebecca Kutler, a longtime CNN talent and development executive who had had a hand in the success of anchors and contributors including Abby Phillip and Van Jones, is leaving the news outlet, a move that is said to be raising eyebrows among some of the Warner Bros. Discovery outlet’s team of journalists.
Kutler had most recently been senior vice president and head of programming for CNN+, the much-promoted streaming video hub that was scuttled by CNN’s new corporate parent quickly after the merger of Discovery and WarnerMedia. But her influence at CNN spans well beyond a new streaming effort. She also oversees all analysts, contributors and commentators for CNN, a job she has held since 2015, and was a key lieutenant for former CNN chief Jeff Zucker as well as Amy Entelis, who oversees talent at the news venue

CNN+ is gone, but some of the big-name anchors who were hired for the service appear to be sticking around for a while.
Chris Licht, the new chairman and CEO at the Warner Bros. Discovery news operation, gave indications at a town hall meeting on Thursday that he intended to find places for some of the popular names that were lured to the company with the promise of new programs for CNN.+ The subscription-based streaming service was scuttled abruptly by the company’s new parent after it completed its acquisition of WarnerMedia from AT&T. Three people familiar with the conversations at the meeting said Licht indicated he wanted to find places for Chris Wallace, the one-time Fox News anchor, and Audie Cornish, the NPR veteran, appearing in parts of the company’s portfolio. He also said Kasie Hunt, who was hired from NBC News, has been appearing in current CNN programming.

Updated, with comment from Chris Wallace and Kasie Hunt: CNN+ is on its way out, but the new leadership at Warner Bros Discovery has given every indication that there could still be a future for some of its programming.
Much of the speculation has centered on the future of the highest-profile hire for the streaming service, Chris Wallace, who stunned his Fox News colleagues in December to announce that he was leaving. His CNN+ show, Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?, has made news on a number of occasions with his probing sit-downs with the likes of Bob Iger and Jen Psaki, and it’s not too much of a leap to imagine him moving to CNN.
There has been some anticipation that Wallace, with his show’s extended and probing interviews, would be most likely to get such a berth. CNN has had a big hole to fill at 9 p.

Move over Quibi, the entertainment industry has a new poster child for epic streaming fails.
Warner Bros. Discovery announced on Thursday that it will be minus CNN+ next week, shuttering 2022’s most confusing SVOD play a mere 32 days after its launch. The quick curtain proves David Zaslav is eager to sunset anything that fails to deliver on his goal of turning his newly combined business into “the best media company in the world.” CNN+ will become another weird footnote under the WarnerMedia leadership tenure of Jason Kilar.
Far from Atlanta, you can hear the champagne-cork popping and laughter emanating from the Fox Nation offices. More importantly, it heralds the arrival of a new era in the streaming wars.
While the conflicts rage on, it is no longer an arms race. As the Netflix Q1 earnings debacle made clear, spending billions to build vast content machines is not a current business...

CNN+ is no more. The streaming service is shutting down just four weeks after its March 29 launch. The service will end all operations on Saturday, April 30, per The New York Times. Warner Bros. Discovery made the call to shut down the CNN streamer, which was championed by CNN chief digital officer Andrew Morse. Morse is reportedly stepping down from his position as the streaming service shutters. Former CNN president Jeff Zucker was also one of its biggest proponents. The CNN+ staff was informed of the decision in an all-hands meeting led by incoming CNN president Chris Licht on Thursday, April 21, at noon. The app was marketed as the future of the news network, with Fox News Sunday‘s Chris Wallace, former NPR host Audie Cornish, and food writer Alison Roman all signing on to work with the service. CNN+’s swift end comes after WarnerMedia closed its merger with Discovery earlier in April.

Warner Bros. Discovery is shutting down CNN+ as of April 30, marking one of the company’s first significant maneuvers since completing the merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery less than two weeks ago.
The decision puts an abrupt end to an ambitious and aggressive venture that people familiar with the matter say rankled David Zaslav, the new CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, from the start. Zaslav was annoyed by the decision of Jason Kilar, the former CEO of WarnerMedia when it was owned by AT&T, to launch CNN+ just weeks before Discovery was set to take over operations. But he was unable to communicate with WarnerMedia management, owing to legal boundaries surrounding the merger process.
“This decision is in line with Wbd’s broader direct-to-consumer strategy,” said Chris Licht, the incoming CEO of CNN, in a statement. “In a complex streaming market, consumers want simplicity and an all-in service, which provides...

A recent decision by parent company Warner Bros. Discovery will make it difficult to add viewers to CNN+.
Warner Bros. Discovery has decided to suspend external marketing for the recently launched subscription streaming-news service, according to a person familiar with the venture, making the task of luring new subscribers exponentially more difficult. CNN and Warner Bros. Discovery declined to make executives available to discuss the matter, which was previously reported by Axios.
And yet, life continues apace for the anchors and correspondents tasked with producing the programs for the new venue, which launched three weeks ago and was seen as CNN’s stab at bringing younger, cord-cutting audiences under its massive news umbrella at a time when more viewers are migrating to streaming video. None of the CNN+ shows have been canceled, according to three people familiar with the matter. A program for Audie Cornish, the celebrated NPR journalist who...

CNN, which created the 24-hour news cycle, was also the first to know that it wasn’t enough. Facing increasing competition in real-time news, CNN executives confronted the new reality a decade ago: It needed to evolve or face obsolescence.
It all came down to one question: “What can you give viewers that makes CNN essential?,” Amy Entelis, executive VP for talent and content development at CNN Worldwide, told IndieWire in an interview at SXSW. The answer was more original, exclusive reporting, plus not-news programming from CNN Original Series and CNN Films to offer deeper takes on the people, places, and events that commanded appointment viewing.
Today, CNN faces another pivot. It ranks last place in the cable news ratings, well behind Fox News, but the 40-year-old company is betting that the March 29 launch of CNN+ will reinvigorate the brand. News delivered by boldface talent is of supreme importance; Wolf Blitzer,...

WarnerMedia has officially revealed the launch date of the upcoming CNN+ streamer, with the news subscription service set to land on March 29. CNN is scheduled to present a panel at this weekend’s South By South West Festival, where executives and anchors will provide more details on the upcoming streaming service. For the past seven years, Chris Licht’s favorite comic has been Stephen Colbert. As the new chairman of CNN, Licht’s focus has instantly shifted to the brilliant ex-comic from Ukraine named Volodymyr Zelensky, whose heroics are the story of the hour.
“Give CNN one great news story and all my network’s problems will instantly disappear,” Ted Turner, CNN’s founder, once assured me.
The ultimate news junkie, Turner, now 83 and struggling with dementia, surely is mesmerized by the Ukraine drama, both on camera and off. The brutal Russian invasion has not only pulled cable news out of its doldrums but also put the spotlight on the behind-the-scenes chaos playing out at CNN and its rivals. Managements are changing mid-stream and so are their underlying narratives.
The bravery of the cable news reporters and cameramen reminds us of their ability to change history, even as they report it.

CNN and Fox News Channel are fierce rivals, and their anchors regularly take pot shots at each other. But there is at least one thing on which they agree: how much a new subscriber to their streaming outlets ought to pay.
CNN will charge $5.99 per month for its new CNN Plus, a subscription-video streaming outlet that is expected to launch in late March, according to a person familiar with the matter, confirming information previously reported by The Los Angeles Times. That is the same monthly fee sought by Fox News for its Fox Nation outlet. Allison Gollust, the chief marketing officer at CNN, has resigned from the network following corporate parent WarnerMedia’s investigation into “issues associated with Chris Cuomo and former Governor Andrew Cuomo,” according to a memo from Jason Kilar, the company’s CEO.
“Performed by a third-party law firm and led by a former federal judge, the investigation was comprehensive and definitive. It was commissioned in September and concluded this weekend, which now allows me to share additional information with you,” Kilar said. “Based on interviews of more than 40 individuals and a review of over 100,000 texts and emails, the investigation found violations of Company policies, including CNN’s News Standards and Practices, by Jeff Zucker, Allison Gollust, and Chris Cuomo.”
He added: “I realize this news is troubling, disappointing, and frankly, painful to read. These are valid feelings many of you have.”
In a statement, Gollust alleged WarnerMedia was trying to undermine her in public.

Yes, there is going to be some CNN in CNN Plus.
After focusing largely on new talent for the soon-to-launch streaming-video service, WarnerMedia’s CNN is turning some attention to new programming from current staff. CNN has captured attention in recent weeks for unveiling new shows led by people such as Scott Galloway, Chris Wallace, Eva Longoria, Audie Cornish and Alison Roman. Aside from a parenting series led by Anderson Cooper, however, news about new programming from the CNN staffers familiar to viewers has been kept under guard.
Kate Bolduan, who anchors a late-morning hour on the WarnerMedia-backed outlet’s linear cable network, will also lead “Five Things,” s daily morning show that is an extension of a popular newsletter and podcaster. Bolduan will count down five essential stories viewers need to know to start their day. Meanwhile, Sara Sidner, a CNN senior national correspondent, will host “The Big Picture,...

Dr. Mike may be hanging out another shingle. Actress Jane Seymour says she’s open to a reboot of Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman.
Seymour is evidently picking up on the momentum created earlier this week when she spoofed the 1867 frontier doctor as a medical marijuana purveyor on the Jimmy Kimmel Show.
Seymour made her wishes known tonight on Buzzfeed News’s Profile, which airs weekly via Facebook Watch. Audie Cornish of NPR’s All Things Considered was the host who drew out Seymour.
Dr. Quinn ran on CBS from 1993 to 1998, and also spawned two TV movies. The show is still available worldwide in syndication.
Asked tonight about her feelings on a Dr. Quinn return, Seymour said, “We wish!…They have brought back absolutely everything, I have no idea why they wouldn’t bring this back…people all over the world, all cultures, love Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman…It’s so relevant to today,...

Anderson Cooper will not sit behind a desk for his newest show. He will not be surrounded by the bright red-and-white graphics blocks for which his news outlet is known. There’s no need. Anderson Cooper’s new CNN show will not be seen on CNN.
The program, “Full Circle,” debuts July 16, and will appear on Facebook Watch at 6:25 p.m. Monday through Friday. It’s aimed at getting Cooper and CNN “where everybody is and increasingly will be,” says the anchor, taking a break for an interview while visiting Allen & Co’s annual media-and-technology executive gathering in Sun Valley, Idaho. “On their mobile phone.”
CNN has experimented with other kinds of social-media programing in the recent past, airing a show called “The Update” on Snapchat for a period of four months. Sending Cooper into the fray on Facebook, however, represents an even bigger trial, utilizing one of...
