The pitch was "Rambo in an office building." In the 1980s, the idea of a Rambo type in anything, anywhere would at least get your project shuttled down the studio production pipeline. 20th Century Fox rightly believed they had a potential winner in "Die Hard." So why was the project anathema to every A-list movie star in Hollywood?
Perhaps it was the pedigree. "Die Hard" was an adaptation of Roderick Thorp's action novel "Nothing Lasts Forever," the author's 1979 sequel to his 1966 bestseller "The Detective." That cop thriller had been turned into a 1968 star vehicle for Frank Sinatra, who was nearing the end of his 1960s big-screen comeback. It was a solid hit for 20th Century Fox, but, despite a feint toward grittiness, it was viewed as nothing more than a paycheck gig for the Chairman.
So 20 years later, when Fox spied blockbuster potential in Thorp's sequel (which was...

After a lot of controversy and some outrage, Jake Gyllenhaal‘s Road House is finally here and it seems to be a big hit among the audience. Based on a 1989 film of the same name by Rowdy Herrington, the Prime Video film follows the story of a former UFC fighter Dalton, who is hired by the owner of a Florida Keys roadhouse to protect it from some goons. Directed by Doug Liman, Road House stars Gyllenhaal in the lead role with Conor McGregor, Daniela Melchior, Billy Magnussen, Lukas Gage, Hannah Love Lanier, and Jessica Williams starring in supporting roles. Merian C. Cooper and Ernest Schoedsack's classic monster movie "King Kong" was released in 1933, so the monster turns 91 years old in 2024. That means he's definitely too old for this sh*t.
In Adam Wingard's 2021 film "Godzilla vs. Kong," the 70-year-old nuclear gorilla-whale and the 91-year-old mega-ape, both drawn by an ineffable, in-born monstrous instinct, had to fight. Over the course of many decades, Godzilla movies have taught us that if two kaiju ever appear in the same film, they instantly hate one another and have to start wailing on each other. It won't be until a tertiary monster appears — usually an "evil" one — that the primary and secondary monsters put aside their differences and team up to hang a beatin' on the new guy. This is what happened in "Godzilla vs. Kong." At first, the title monsters were enemies. When Mechagodzilla appeared, however, Kong and Godzilla pounded the interloper into the dirt.

Writer Shane Black pretty much invented the "buddy cop" movie with "Lethal Weapon," his gloriously violent Christmas-set action pic that introduced moviegoers to LAPD Detectives Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) and Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover). The basic set-up of the franchise, which was helmed entirely by Richard Donner: Murtaugh plays things by the book and is close to retirement (he somehow remains "close to retirement" through a series of four films). Riggs, in sharp contrast, is a trigger-happy psycho, suicidal in the wake of the death of his wife. These two mismatched cops become partners and, of course, friends. Also, they kill a lot of people. While this is one franchise that should probably finally retire (just like Murtaugh), there's a fifth film in the works.
But we're not here to talk about that. Instead, let's go back to the days when Mel Gibson sported a mullet and wasn't problematic!

A fresh report suggests that the long-gestating buddy cop sequel Lethal Weapon 5 will shoot next year, with Mel Gibson in the director’s chair.
We know that a fifth entry in the Lethal Weapon series has been in the works for a long time. The late, great Richard Donner – director of the first four films – was working on it before he passed away in 2021. Then, in the same year we heard that Mel Gibson, one half of the series’ leading duo was set to take over the directorial reins. Of course, a lot has happened in the world since 2021, with a lot of that turbulence directly affecting Hollywood film production. However, despite all of the uncertainty, Hollywood insider Daniel Richtman (via World of Reel) is reporting that Lethal Weapon 5 will shoot next year.

As far as Christmas action movies go, most would say John McTiernan’s Die Hard takes the crown as the greatest of all time. However, another action classic that hit theaters a year before, Lethal Weapon, is also set around the holiday. Written by a young Shane Black (using the Christmas setting that would become his trademark), this wound up being perhaps the most influential action movie of all time, maybe even more so than Die Hard (although that’s debatable). While not the first buddy cop movie (older films like Freebie and the Bean and Best Movie You Never Saw fave Running Scared are also part of the genre), it set the tone for many films to follow. There was something so perfect about the pairing of Mel Gibson’s crazed Martin Riggs and Danny Glover’s family man Roger Murtagh, along with Richard Donner’s ace direction. The three men loved each other,...

Christmas is fast approaching and while some will be busy decking the halls with boughs of holly, for many action movie fans the holidays are all about indulging in the time-honored tradition of watching Die Hard.
There are some who would have you believe Die Hard isn’t a Christmas movie. To them, we say “bah, humbug,” or rather “yippee-ki-yay….” For one thing, it’s got John McClane cast firmly in the role of Santa Claus, roaming the corridors of Nakatomi Plaza trying to find out “who’s naughty or nice.” Then there is Han Gruber, a modern-day Grinch with a dash of Ebenezer Scrooge intent on ruining the festive fun. He sees the error in his ways, of course. Unfortunately for him, that moment of realization comes as he takes a swan dive off the top of a very tall building.

When you think of Will Smith or Martin Lawrence, you just have to think about Bad Boys. That’s precisely what they are. Well, that maybe the case for Will Smith, but more on that later. Even if you’re not a fan of Michael Bay, it’s pretty hard to not be entertained by these movies. It has to be one of the most defining franchises of the buddy cop genre. This duo is possibly even better than Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh from the Lethal Weapon movies. Hey, I said possibly, but just admit that it’s a tough contest. And for

Guns firing, blood flying, goons dying, and an unlikely hero quipping before bringing down the big bad. Just your standard action movie, right? Now replace the blaring guitar or thunderous orchestra with “Jingle Bell Rock,” “I’ll Be Home For Christmas,” and “The First Noel.” Wait… is this a holiday movie or Lethal Weapon?
Every year, the debate rages on. Bruce Willis, spraying machine gun fire. Hans, nonplussed, killing the world’s worst yuppie scumbag Ellis. Al, the redeemed killer cop, gunning down Karl in a surprise display of heroics. Sure, John McTiernan, Jeb Stuart, and Steven E. de Souza’s Die Hard is a certified classic of the action genre, but is it really a Christmas movie? After starring in the first “Lethal Weapon” movie more than 30 years ago, Mel Gibson is in talks to direct the upcoming “Lethal Weapon 5,” Variety has confirmed.
The fifth entry of the classic action franchise has been in development for several years, with Richard Wenk (“The Equalizer”) writing the most recent draft of the script. Richard Donner, who directed and produced all four previous “Lethal Weapon” films, had been working to develop a fifth installment, but he died on July 5, 2021, at 91, putting the plans in limbo.
Donner’s wife, Lauren Schuler Donner, will produce the film, alongside Rideback’s Dan Lin. Jonathan Eirich of Rideback and Derek Hoffman of The Donners’ Company will executive produce.
Speaking at an event in London, Gibson let it slip that he would take over directing duties from Donner, fulfilling the late director’s wishes.
“He was developing the screenplay and he got pretty far along with it.

Romance is like surgery. You can review the protocols until you recite them in your sleep.
You can have all the right skills, and maybe you've performed the procedure hundreds of times before. It doesn't mean you'll succeed.
As the surgeons of Grey Sloan (past and present) can attest to, they lose as often (if not more) as they win.
The ghosts of dead patients and failed relationships haunt the hospital.
Even romances that survived for seasons and overcame just about every obstacle end in tragedy for Grey's Anatomy characters.
Despite those odds, Meredith Grey would advise it's better to be in the game than to never have played at all.
Pity the relationships that never got off the ground, despite the writers teasing they would happen.
Some could've been greater than the romances we received.

Well, this is going to be a twisted ride!
Sometimes a series tries to be too many things at once, but even though Prodigal Son Season 1 Episode 1 juggled a lot, the series may pull it off.
It's dark, twisted, horrific, and fun.
It's a psycho-suspense thriller, a family dramedy, and a graphic crime show wrapped up in one. Fortunately, it keeps the series from slipping into the pitfalls of being too procedural.
At the heart of the series is Tom Payne's Malcolm Bright. So far Payne does a fantastic job of portraying the conflict and duality of Malcolm without overdoing it, which given the subject matter, he easily could have done.
Malcolm has all the high-energy and deduction skills of Sherlock Holmes, the narcissism, rogue charm, and inability to play well with others of Gregory House, and the gawky awkwardness and brilliance of Criminal Minds' Spencer Reid, which makes him instantly likable.

In a strange way, watching a mediocre Korean thriller is almost as exhilarating as watching any of the legitimately great ones the country’s film industry continues to churn out — it’s wild to see how standards have gotten high enough that even a rambunctious serial killer saga with an ingenious premise and a swaggering Ma Dong-seok performance can still feel like something of a disappointment.
Such is the case with Lee Won-tae’s “The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil,” a giddy little bruiser that might feel like more of a refreshing kick to the chest if not for how much tamer it is than “The Good, the Bad, the Weird,” or how poor the plotting is when compared to a recent crime saga like 2013’s riveting “New World” (to name just two of the many superior movies that also happen to boast Ma’s barrel-chested charm). As a cracked lip wraith, eyes hiding in the shadows of a face scorched by the La sun, Nicole Kidman’s Destroyer detective joins an illustrious precinct of cinema’s finest cops. In the tradition of her forebears, Kidman’s Erin Bell is burdened by the badge, inherently flawed, and capable of getting under your skin in an unshakeable fashion.
Destroyer starring Nicole Kidman is out to download now and own on DVD/Blu-ray from Monday, the 27th of May.
Let’s imagine we can take a tour through a cinematic police department, and tip our caps to the sometimes honourable men and women who’ve served the silver screen since The Keystone Cops whizzed around in early 1900s monochrome.
It’s important to note that passing through the holding cell reveals a couple of badge holders who you’d ordinarily find marked out for distinction on a list like this.

Lethal Weapon is canceled.
There will be no fourth season to the Fox drama.
Rebooting the already rebooted franchise after the Clane Crawford debacle was always a big bet.
After Crawford got canned as a result of still wholly unknown drama behind the scenes and between him and series star, Damon Wayans, many expected the show to get canceled after 13 episodes.
Renewal Scorecard 2018-19
Seann William Scott, always a fan favorite, entered the show at the most unflattering time possible but made a great showing as a new character named Cole.
Things must have perked up for Wayans upon his arrival, too, because he signed on for an additional three episodes despite earlier saying he would be done with the show for good after 13.
That's most unfortunate for the remaining fans of the action-packed drama, however, as the Lethal Weapon Season 3 ended on a cliffhanger.

There was plenty of drama during three seasons of Fox's Lethal Weapon TV show -- both in front of the camera and behind-the-scenes. There won't be a fourth season however since the series has now been cancelled.
A buddy cop comedy-drama, Lethal Weapon stars Damon Wayans, Seann William Scott, Kevin Rahm, Johnathan Fernandez, Michelle Mitchenor, Keesha Sharp, Dante Brown, and Chandler Kinney. The series follows Detective Roger Murtaugh (Wayans), his Lapd colleagues, and his family at home. After the death of Martin Riggs (Clayne Crawford), Murtaugh is partnered with Detective Wesley Cole (Scott), a former CIA operative who's been everywhere and seen everything. Read More…...

There are a lot of people feeling a lot of pain all over Hollywood today with the annual ruthless round of Black Friday cancellations but, Donald Trump and Clayne Crawford may be pretty pleased.

Fox has canceled its troubled cop series “Lethal Weapon” after three seasons, Variety has learned.
The show originally starred Clayne Crawford and Damon Wayans as a buddy cop duo, however, Variety reported that the pair were far from friendly and fought regularly off-camera, leading to Crawford’s sacking. Season three continued with Seann William Scott replacing Crawford, however, Wayans announced he was quitting and show, and coupled with a steep decline in ratings, it’s no great surprise that Fox decided to pull the plug.
The show averaged a 0.71 rating in the key 18-49 demographic and just over 3 million total viewers per episode in Season 3, which was a significant dip from the season 2 average rating of 1.0 and average viewership of just over 4 million. Even those numbers represented a pretty substantial decline from season 1, which had an average rating of 1.57 and 6.5 million total viewers.

“Lethal Weapon” has been canceled by Fox after three seasons, TheWrap has learned.
The Damon Wayans and Seann William Scott-led action drama was axed Friday, just a few hours after the broadcast network canceled freshman drama “The Passage,” and first-year sitcom “The Cool Kids” and one day after it ordered six new series ahead of its upfront presentation to advertisers on Monday
After the exit of his former co-star Clayne Crawford (who played Martin Riggs) following Season 2 due to bad on-set behavior, Wayans (Roger Murtaugh) said last October he was leaving the Warner Bros Television-produced show too, come December.
“I’m going to be quitting the show in December after we finish the initial 13 [episodes],” he said in a video interview with Electronic Urban Report, just weeks after the show had returned with Wayans’ new co-lead, Scott (who played Wesley Cole), at his side. “I’m a 58-year-old diabetic...

“Lethal Weapon” has wrapped its 15-episode third season, capping off what is inarguably a less dramatic run than the one the Fox series saw last year, but one still marked by a possible looming crisis — and we’re not talking about what’s happening on-screen.
After the exit of his former co-star Clayne Crawford (who played Martin Riggs) following Season 2, due to bad on-set behavior, Damon Wayans (Roger Murtaugh) said last October he was leaving the Warner Bros Television-produced show too, come December.

The Lethal Weapon cast has a number of new actors and actresses for Season 3 of the show. When Clayne Crawford was fired from his role as Martin Riggs, the creators of the show had to make some big changes. In addition to Seann William Scott stepping into the role of Wesley Cole, they had to present a love interest for him. In this case, it was actress Maggie Lawson, who plays his ex-wife, Natalie Flynn. Some confusion has been created, as a number of viewers felt they saw Alicia Silverstone on Lethal Weapon. Maybe it was the way that […]

“Lethal Weapon” has already survived the loss of Martin Riggs, but could the Fox action drama survive the loss of Roger Murtaugh too?
After the exit of his former co-star Clayne Crawford (Riggs) ahead of the currently airing third season due to bad on-set behavior, Damon Wayans (Murtaugh) said he was ready to leave the show too come December — and then December came and went and not only was the actor still starring alongside his new new screen partner Seann William Scott (who plays Wesley Cole), but the broadcaster had added two more episodes to Season 3.
So, if the show gets picked up for a fourth season — which it hasn’t yet — would the network be willing to do it without Wayans, should he really want out? After all, what is “Leathal Weapon” without both Riggs and Murtaugh?

Season 3 for the Lethal Weapon cast has been marked by a lot of changes. That includes two new main characters, following the death of Martin Riggs (played by Clayne Crawford). The additions of Seann William Scott as Wesley Cole and Nishi Munshi as Erica Malick have worked very well for the Lethal Weapon cast. It has been an almost seamless adjustment for the show, even though it went down a separate road from the feature-length films. There are already 12 episodes in the books for the current season, with the last one showing that Trish Murtaugh (played by Keesha […]

Each year brings a raft of deaths and exits of our favorite TV characters, but 2018 saw them come at a dizzying pace. While this year’s list is numbingly long, Deadline looks at some of the most high-profile and memorable characters who left us in 2018.
Some we knew would be exiting, but the question was how, such as Kevin Spacey’s Frank Underwood in House of Cards and Danny Masterson’s in The Ranch, both of whom had been fired amid sexual misconduct allegations. Of course, there’s Roseanne Barr, whose meteorically successful Roseanne revival was canceled amid her racist Twitter rant against Valerie Jarrett, a former adviser to President Barack Obama. The question was how she would be written out of the subsequently greenlit The Conners spinoff.
Other memorable character deaths/exits included Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes and Lauren Cohan’s Maggie Rhee in The Walking Dead, Clayne Crawford...

What happened to Riggs on Lethal Weapon may have been very unexpected by a lot of viewers but it probably needed to happen for the show to survive. Clayne Crawford, the actor who played Martin Riggs on the television version of Lethal Weapon, was fired by the producers of the show. Drama on the set surrounded Crawford. His behavior, including an on-set argument with co-star Damon Wayans, led to two separate reprimands from the network. Crawford was accused of bullying other actors on set and it was even said that he made women cry! In the end, Clayne Crawford was […]

“I’m okay. It’s just been a while…”
Lethal Weapon enters its third season facing the difficult task of replacing a main character. This would be a lofty endeavor for any series, but Lethal Weapon lives and dies off its buddy cop chemistry between Riggs and Murtaugh. The whole reason that Lethal Weapon was even adapted onto television in the first place is because that Riggs/Murtaugh dynamic is so appealing and infectious. On top of this, there’s a large portion of Lethal Weapon’s audience who thought that Clayne Crawford was the show and will find any replacement a tough pill to swallow. (Spoiler warning: This story contains spoilers from Tuesday’s season premiere of “Lethal Weapon.”)
Clayne Crawford was fired from Fox’s “Lethal Weapon” last season, and though it ended with a seemingly dire cliffhanger for his character, it wasn’t immediately clear how the show would handle his exit.
Fan questions were answered in the Season 3 premiere on Tuesday, when the Fox drama revealed that Martin Riggs did not survive a shooting in the graveyard from last season’s finale.
Much of the episode, co-written by showrunner Matt Miller, focuses on Murtaugh’s (Damon Wayans’) inability to accept the death of his partner, convinced that he fell victim to some vast conspiracy. Unshaven and refusing to change out of sweatpants, Murtaugh spends all his time on a boat parked in his driveway, trying to crack the case of Riggs’ death.

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “Lethal Weapon” Season 3, Episode 1, “In the Same Boat.”]
Wesley Cole says he “can’t ever replace” Martin Riggs, but Seann William Scott has already taken over for Clayne Crawford. Following a slew of production issues stemming from a fractured relationship between Crawford and Damon Wayans, the Season 3 premiere kills off Riggs for good — as was strongly implied in last year’s finale.
Now, Fox’s “Lethal Weapon” TV show is back, and it’s a whole new ballgame… except it’s also exactly the same. The time-honored tradition of swapping out one partner for another has been executed by shows like “NYPD Blue” and “The X-Files.” Each has their own tricks to ease an audience into the new world, often based on how the beloved star departs, but the “Lethal Weapon” team made savvy decisions to appease everyone who’s (understandably) grown attached to Riggs over two seasons.

To recast or not recast: That was the big question facing many showrunners for the 2018-19 television season, after the exits — both planned and unplanned —of some integral series stars.
After Clayne Crawford was fired from “Lethal Weapon” for abusive on-set behavior, the Fox drama’s fate was in limbo. Studio Warner Bros. worked to replace their co-lead in order to stand a better chance at the third season getting on the schedule. They struck a deal with Seann William Scott, giving the film star his first regular role on the small screen, and it proved to be the key.
“If we could not feel confident to bring that show back with a great cast in a way that the audience would accept it, we would have simply not brought the show back,” Fox TV Group boss Gary Newman admitted during the network’s Television Critics Assn. panel in August.
